Metric Causes of Refractive Errors of the Eye.

AIMS: To confirm current knowledge about the causes of refractive errors in adults. To evaluate the influence of systemic, i.e., primary curvature and, on the other hand, axial causes of refractive errors of the eye, in comparison with the Gullstrand model of the eye expressed by axial length and corneal curvature ratio. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The basic sample included 60 eyes of 30 subjects with an average age of 22.3 ±1.1 years. There were 3 men and 27 women in the group. They were young, generally healthy individuals, without serious eye pathologies. The basic sample was divided into resear

Refractive error and ocular motility in plagiocephaly.

Plagiocephaly, which is caused by premature closure of one of the coronal sutures, leads to fronto-orbital asymmetry. The aim of this work was to study the repercussions of orbital deformation on the visual system. Twenty-one patients presenting with plagiocephaly at birth and operated on by the same craniofacial technique (bilateral approach with translation and advancement of the entire involved orbits) were included in the study. All of the patients were examined by clinical anthropometry with three-dimensional reconstruction and underwent complete eye examination by the same observer. Foll

Prediction of aphakic refractive error in children.

Formulas created to predict the optical requirements of the aphakic eye have been tested mainly in adult eyes. The accuracy of these formulas in shorter pediatric aphakic eyes was examined using retrospective analysis of 17 aphakic pediatric patients. The Sanders-Retzlaff-Kraff contact lens formula, used previously to predict required lens powers for epikeratophakia, consistently underestimated the required aphakic correction in the shorter eyes, which may have been responsible in part for the large undercorrections obtained previously in patients under one year of age. The Hoffer-Colenbrander

Impact of Peripheral Refractive Errors in Mobility Performance.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the functional effects of peripheral refractive errors on mobility performance through a stair negotiation task. METHODS: Twenty-one young, normal sighted subjects navigated through an obstacle with steps, wearing spectacles that altered only their peripheral refraction. Lenses were used to induce positive defocus (+2 diopters [D] and +4 D), negative defocus (-2 D and -4 D), or astigmatism (+1.75 D and -3.75 D, axis 45 degrees) in the periphery. Feet trajectories were analyzed, and several gait assessment parameters were obtained. Statisti

Origins of Refractive Errors: Environmental and Genetic Factors.

Refractive errors are the product of a mismatch between the axial length of the eye and its optical power, creating blurred vision. Uncorrected refractive errors are the second leading cause of worldwide blindness. One refractive error currently attracting significant scientific interest is myopia, mostly owing to the recent rise in its prevalence worldwide and associated ocular disease burden. This increase in myopia prevalence has also been rapid, suggesting environmental influences in addition to any genetic influences on eye growth. This review defines refractive errors, describes their pr
