Responses to intimate partner violence in Kakuma refugee camp: refugee interactions with agency systems.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) has been recognised as a significant problem amongst forcibly displaced communities, and great progress has been made by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) in responding to IPV and other forms of sexual and gender based violence. However, they have not always effectively engaged refugee communities in these activities, with potentially negative consequences for the health and protection of women. This study was conducted in Kakuma refugee camp, north-west Kenya. Eighteen focus group discussions were conducted with 157 refugees from various n

Evaluation of community based surveillance in the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, 2019.

BACKGROUND: Following an influx of an estimated 742,000 Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, Médecins sans Frontières (MSF) established an active indicator-based Community Based Surveillance (CBS) in 13 sub-camps in Cox's Bazar in August 2017. Its objective was to detect epidemic prone diseases early for rapid response. We describe the surveillance, alert and response in place from epidemiological week 20 (12 May 2019) until 44 (2 November 2019). METHODS: Suspected cases were identified through passive health facility surveillance and active indicator-based CBS. CBS-teams conducted active case fi

The potential impact of COVID-19 in refugee camps in Bangladesh and beyond:  A modeling study.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 could have even more dire consequences in refugees camps than in general populations. Bangladesh has confirmed COVID-19 cases and hosts almost 1 million Rohingya refugees from Myanmar, with 600,000 concentrated in the Kutupalong-Balukhali Expansion Site (mean age, 21 years; standard deviation [SD], 18 years; 52% female). Projections of the potential COVID-19 burden, epidemic speed, and healthcare needs in such settings are critical for preparedness planning. METHODS AND FINDINGS: To explore the potential impact of the introduction of severe acute respiratory syndrome coro

Displaced Rohingya children at high risk for mental health problems: Findings from refugee camps within Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: The 2017 political violence against the Rohingya people in the state of Rakhine resulted in a large influx of displaced populations into Bangladesh. Given harsh conditions and experiences in Myanmar, and the harrowing journey to the border, raised levels of child neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) and mental health problems were expected. METHODS: A team of child development professionals, physicians, psychologists, and developmental therapists screened 622 children in clinics within the refugee camps using the Developmental Screening Questionnaire (DSQ; 0-<2 years), and the Ten

Understanding the crux of refugees' health inequities: the challenges of the health system in Nguenyyiel refugee camp in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Ethiopia has a longstanding history of providing refuge to forcibly displaced people. This commitment to refugee protection is underscored by progressive domestic policies and international commitments the country made to protect refugee rights. However, the country’s reliance on camp-based refugee protection has overshadowed these aspirations. Within these camps, highly regulated service provision and restricted out-of-camp movement limit refugees’ local integration and access to essential services. As a result, refugees have to rely on existing capacities and available services i

Sustainable support solutions for community-based rehabilitation workers in refugee camps: piloting telehealth acceptability and implementation.

BACKGROUND: The lack of training and education of Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) workers poses one of the most significant barriers to receiving effective occupational, physical and speech therapy for individuals with disabilities in Low-to-Middle Income Countries (LMIC), especially in countries with significant refugee populations. The aim of this study was to successfully implement a telehealth support system for CBR workers, evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of this intervention's implementation among CBR workers in the CBR setting, and further identify strategies to address

A critical review on iodine presence in drinking water access at the Saharawi refugee camps (Tindouf, Algeria).

Iodine content in drinking water at the Saharawi refugee camps was analysed to assess the controversy in the origin of the prevalence of goitre among this population. A review on the iodine presence in drinking water reported in the literature was conducted, along with international standards and guidelines for iodine intake and iodine concentration in drinking water were also consulted. Chinese legislation was taken as the reference standard to evaluate the iodine concentration in water as adequate (10-150μg/L) or not (high iodine >150μg/L and iodine excess goitre >300μg/L). Water sampling wa

Poor housing quality increases risk of rodent infestation and Lassa fever in refugee camps of Sierra Leone.

Lassa fever, a viral hemorrhagic fever endemic in parts of West Africa, is a severe febrile illness transmitted to humans by the rodent Mastomys natalensis. To determine risk of Lassa fever in households in Sierra Leonean refugee camps, we analyzed the spatial relationships between households with a Lassa case and focal locations of potential rodent habitats. Quality and hygiene factors of households were assessed to determine possible risk factors for household rodent infestation and occurrence of Lassa fever. The odds to have a rat burrow were higher in case houses than in control houses (OR

Factors associated with COVID-19 vaccine acceptance among refugee women at Dzaleka refugee camp in Malawi.

BACKGROUND: In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on healthcare systems worldwide, with varying effects depending on location and socioeconomic status. Two of the challenges faced were the limited availability of COVID-19 vaccines and the slow uptake of those vaccines. Women refugees are uniquely vulnerable during migration, experiencing gender-based violence, which is associated with poor health outcomes related to gender inequality. However, there is limited literature on COVID-19 vaccination decision-making among refugee women in refugee camps, particularly in African coun

Entomological survey of sand fly vectors and molecular screening for Leishmania parasite in refugee camps in Ethiopia.

Visceral leishmaniasis is transmitted by infected female sand flies. However, entomological data from refugee camps remained limited. This study aimed to describe sand fly fauna and assess natural Leishmania infection in selected refugee camps in Ethiopia. The study was conducted in four refugee camps. Sand flies were collected using a CDC light trap and sticky trap. Both male and female sand flies were dissected, and morphologically identified. The female sand flies were preserved in 95% ethyl alcohol for Leishmania DNA screening. A total of 2196 sand flies were collected. Phlebotomus rodhain

Predictors of antenatal care utilization among the Rohingya population in the refugee camps of Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: While studies in both high- and low-income settings have demonstrated the importance of early and regular antenatal care (ANC) utilization, evidence from crisis-affected populations remains limited. Rohingya refugees in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, face unique barriers to healthcare; previous studies have found low rates of ANC utilization. This study examines the predictors of number of visits and timing of initiation of ANC among pregnant Rohingya women in Cox's Bazar. METHODS: Data came from a prenatal birth cohort study of "Intergenerational Risk and Resilience of Rohingya in Disp

Combined use of inactivated and oral poliovirus vaccines in refugee camps and surrounding communities - Kenya, December 2013.

Since the launch of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) in 1988, circulation of indigenous wild poliovirus (WPV) has continued without interruption in only three countries: Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan. During April-December 2013, a polio outbreak caused by WPV type 1 (WPV1) of Nigerian origin resulted in 217 cases in or near the Horn of Africa, including 194 cases in Somalia, 14 cases in Kenya, and nine cases in Ethiopia (all cases were reported as of March 10, 2014). During December 14-18, 2013, Kenya conducted the first-ever campaign providing inactivated poliovirus vaccine
