Histamine effect on human cutaneous blood flow: regional variations.

Different reactivities of small blood vessels to the histamine released by exogenous and endogenous substances may play a role in the regional variations of the elicited cutaneous response. To study the regional dependence of cutaneous blood flow in response to histamine, the compound was administered intradermally (prick introduction), thereby bypassing the spatially dependent penetration process. The induced response was quantified with cutaneous blood flow measurements utilizing laser Doppler flowmetry. Extent of response and time parameters were compared. Three anatomical sites, the back,

Regional cerebral blood flow in pigs estimated by microspheres.

Regional cerebral blood flow in anaesthetized pigs is determined with the microsphere method. Five regions of cortical grey matter and three white subcortical areas in each hemisphere are examined together with anatomically classic structures. The validity of the biopsies was confirmed by freeze drying of the tissue. Three flow measurements in a group of six animals showed large interindividual variations whereas regions with the same structure in the particular animal showed a high degree of uniformity. Symmetrical regions in the two hemispheres were similar with a coefficient of variation be

Regional cerebral blood flow in the persistent vegetative state.

Regional cerebral blood flow (CBF) in eight patients in a persistent vegetative state was measured and compared with that in five healthy volunteers. The patients were classified into three groups: Group 1 (locked-in syndrome) consisted of a single patient, Group 2 (typical vegetative state) of five patients, and Group 3 (prolonged coma) of two patients. CBF was measured early after onset by single photon emission computed tomography with 123I-N-isopropyl-p-iodo-amphetamine and/or 99mTc-hexamethyl-propyleneamine oxime. The regions of interest (ROIs) were the bilateral frontal, temporal, pariet

Regional cerebral blood flow in patients with vertebrobasilar disease.

We have investigated the changes in regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in patients with occlusive vertebrobasilar disease. Fifty patients who showed severe stenosis or occlusion of the vertebrobasilar artery territory were studied by angiography. Lesions in 13 of these patients were limited to the vertebrobasilar artery (limited VB group), and 37 patients showed combined vertebrobasilar/carotid artery lesions (combined VB-C group). Measurements of rCBF in the group of 50 patients using the intravenous xenon 133 technique showed that there was a significant decrease in the mean rCBF (47.5 +/-

Regional cerebral blood flow, diaschisis, and steal after stroke.

Regional CBF was measured by 133Xe inhalation in unilateral cerebral infarction, carotid TIAs, and normal volunteers. Regional CBF values were bilaterally and symmetrically reduced in patients measured within 3 weeks after stroke. Later, rCBF values returned toward normal in the contralateral hemisphere of patients with infarction and in both hemispheres with carotid TIAs. In cases with carotid occlusive disease, flow reduction was seen in the contralateral posterior cerebral artery distribution, with hyperemia in ipsilateral occipital lobe caused by interhemispheric steal. Brainstem-cerebella

Relations of blood pressure and head injury to regional cerebral blood flow.

Hypertension confers increased risk for cognitive decline, dementia, and cerebrovascular disease. These associations have been attributed, in part, to cerebral hypoperfusion. Here we posit that relations of higher blood pressure to lower levels of cerebral perfusion may be potentiated by a prior head injury. Participants were 87 community-dwelling older adults - 69% men, 90% white, mean age=66.9years, 27.6% with a history of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) defined as a loss of consciousness ≤30min resulting from an injury to the head, and free of major medical (other than hypertension), neu

Regional changes in brain blood flow during severe passive hyperthermia: effects of PaCO2 and extracranial blood flow.

We investigated 1) the regional distribution of cerebral blood flow (CBF), 2) the influence of end-tidal Pco2 (PetCO2) on CBF, and 3) the potential for an extracranial blood "steal" from the anterior brain region during passive hyperthermia. Nineteen (13 male) volunteers underwent supine passive heating until a steady-state esophageal temperature of 2°C above resting was established. Measurements were obtained 1) during normothermia (Normo), 2) during poikilocapnic hyperthermia (Hyper), and 3) during hyperthermia with PetCO2 and end-tidal Po2 clamped to Normo levels (Hyper-clamp). Regional brain blood flow in man during acute changes in arterial blood gases.

Despite the importance of blood flow on brainstem control of respiratory and autonomic function, little is known about regional cerebral blood flow (CBF) during changes in arterial blood gases. We quantified: (1) anterior and posterior CBF and reactivity through a wide range of steady-state changes in the partial pressures of CO2 (PaCO2) and O2 (PaO2) in arterial blood, and (2) determined if the internal carotid artery (ICA) and vertebral artery (VA) change diameter through the same range. We used near-concurrent vascular ultrasound measures of flow through the ICA and VA, and blood velocity in

Pancreatic regional blood flow links the endocrine and exocrine diseases.

An increasing number of studies have demonstrated that disease states of the endocrine or exocrine pancreas aggravate one another, which implies bidirectional blood flow between islets and exocrine cells. However, this is inconsistent with the current model of unidirectional blood flow, which is strictly from islets to exocrine tissues. This conventional model was first proposed in 1932, and it has never to our knowledge been revisited to date. Here, large-scale image capture was used to examine the spatial relationship between islets and blood vessels in the following species: human, monkey,

Effects of levodopa on regional cerebral metabolism and blood flow.

Levodopa (L-dopa) has been at the forefront of antiparkinsonian therapy for a half century. Recent advances in functional brain imaging have contributed substantially to the understanding of the effects of L-dopa and other dopaminergic treatment on the activity of abnormal motor and cognitive brain circuits in Parkinson's disease patients. Progress has also been made in understanding the functional pathology of dyskinesias, a common side effect of l-dopa treatment, at both regional and network levels. Here, we review these studies, focusing mainly on the new mechanistic insights provided by me

Regional cerebral blood flow in patients with carbon monoxide intoxication.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Early detection of regional cerebral anomalies in acute carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning by (99m)Tc-hexamethylprophylene amine oxime (HMPAO) brain single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging has been reported previously. However, SPECT findings varied in these studies because of their small population sizes. In this study, we included 96 patients with acute CO intoxication and analyzed the regional perfusion changes in these patients by means of HMPAO brain SPECT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety-six patients, aged 4-80 years (mean age 32 years) with acute

Human placental lactogen decreases regional blood flow in anesthetized pigs.

In 22 pigs anesthetized with sodium pentobarbitone, changes in blood flow caused by infusion of human placental lactogen into the left renal, external iliac, and anterior descending coronary arteries were assessed using electromagnetic flowmeters. In 17 pigs, infusion of human placental lactogen whilst keeping the heart rate and arterial pressure constant decreased coronary, renal and iliac flow. In 5 additional pigs, increasing the dose of human placental lactogen produced a dose-related decrease in regional blood flow. The mechanisms of the above response were studied in 15 of the 17 pigs by

Regional cerebral blood flow and metabolism in chronic subdural hematoma.

There are two hypotheses on how chronic subdural hematoma causes hemiparesis and other focal neurologic symptoms without, in most cases, leaving permanent neurologic deficits. One hypothesis is that the reduced regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) caused by either compression or distortion of the local or remote brain tissue is responsible for hemiparesis. The other hypothesis is that the reduction in rCBF alone is not sufficient to cause permanent hemiparesis.

Changes in regional cerebral blood flow on recovery from depression.

We have previously described focal abnormalities of regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), anterior cingulate cortex and angular gyrus in 40 patients with major depression. We now report on the patterns of change in rCBF in a subgroup of 25 of the same patients who were rescanned following clinical remission of depression. Fifteen patients were scanned when optimally matched for drug treatment (4) or drug free on both occasions (11). The other 10 patients were fully recovered but could not be matched for drug status for clinical and ethical reas
