In this study, two commercially available oral electrolyte solutions (OES) with high sodium (CF) or with high glucose and glycine (SL), and two prototype OES were evaluated in terms of rehydration and preventing catabolism. Prototype OES based on CF were prepared by doubling the glucose amount (CFG) or by doubling both glucose and glycine (CFGG). Thirty-two diarrheic calves were randomly assigned four groups with eight calves in each group. Blood volume increased with CF and CFGG compared with that of other OES. The catabolic preventive effect was excellent in CFGG and SL. Our results suggest

UNLABELLED: Investigations on the acidity of the rumen liquid after intraruminal administration of oral rehydration solutions (ORS) were carried out in 7 young calves. After voluntary intake of about one liter of milk replacer, three times a day, 1 liter of rehydration solution (A, B, C or D) was administered intraruminally by a stomach tube. Prior to every meal rumen fluid samples were aspirated for the determination of the pH, the concentrations of lactic acid and volatile fatty acids. Number of experiments: solution A: n = 2; B: n = 4; C: n = 2; D: n = 5. In 3 experiments, the pH of the rum

BACKGROUND & AIM: Patients with an ileostomy are at increased risk of dehydration and sodium depletion. Treatments recommended may include oral rehydration solutions (ORS). We aimed to investigate if protein type or protein hydrolysation affects absorption from iso-osmolar ORS in patients with an ileostomy.
METHODS: This was a randomised, double-blinded, active comparator-controlled 3 × 3 crossover intervention study. We developed three protein-based ORS with whey protein isolate, caseinate or whey protein hydrolysate. The solutions contained 40-48 g protein/L, 34-45 mmol sodium/L and had an

Previously we reported that standard oral rehydration salts (ORS) solution is not as effective as a reduced-osmolarity glucose-based ORS for the treatment of children with acute noncholera diarrhoea: with standard ORS the diarrhoea lasts longer, stool output is greater, serum sodium is higher, and there is more need for supplemental intravenous infusion. We studied a reduced-osmolarity maltodextrin (MD)-based ORS to determine whether it had similar benefits, and also the effect of sugar malabsorption on the efficacy of standard and MD-based ORS. A total of 90 boys aged 3-24 months with acute n

Ileostomy creation is common among patients with colorectal cancer, diverticulitis, and inflammatory bowel disease. Surgical removal or diversion of the colon can result in nutrition complications, most notably dehydration-a leading cause of hospital readmission-and increased risk of kidney injury. Existing studies on fluid and electrolyte management after ileostomy largely focus on short bowel syndrome or high-output stomas, overlooking the physiological implications of ileostomy creation, even in patients with normal output. Given the absence of standardized oral rehydration protocols and li

Effects of different tonicities, glucose concentrations and temperatures of an oral rehydration solution (ORS) on its uptake and elimination in resting horses were studied. Fluid and electrolyte deficits similar to those occurring during prolonged exercise were induced by the administration of 1 mg/kg bwt of frusemide i.m., 3 h prior to the ORS. Fluid was administered via nasogastric tube at a volume equivalent to 4% bodyweight, which approximated diuretic induced losses. The uptake of fluid was evaluated by changes in haematocrit (PCV) and plasma total protein concentration (TP). Changes in e

Ninety four children aged less than 5 years with diarrhoeal dehydration and acidosis were treated randomly with either World Health Organisation (WHO) oral rehydration solution containing sodium chloride, potassium chloride, sodium bicarbonate and glucose or an oral solution with tripotassium citrate monohydrate replacing the sodium bicarbonate and potassium chloride in the WHO solution. Fifty five children (58%) were hypokalaemic (potassium less than 3.5 mmol/l) on admission. All but two in the citrate group were successfully treated. There were no significant differences in rehydration solut

A feasibility study of rice-salt solution for oral rehydration (OR) was conducted in a village in the Chandpur area of rural Bangladesh in 1983. 305 mothers of children aged 0-4 years were interviewed with a pretraining questionnaire to find out about the availability of rice. The mothers were then trained and encouraged to use rice-salt OR solution to treat patients with diarrhoea. Evaluation of training was assessed by means of field diarrhoea surveillance, case follow-up, rice-salt OR solution sample analysis, and a post-training survey. The study showed that mothers in rural areas could pr

Enteral resuscitation could provide a means to resuscitate burn shock when intravenous (IV) therapy is unavailable, such as in mass disasters. We evaluated the extent of intestinal absorption and resuscitative effects of World Health Organization Oral Rehydration Solution after a 40% TBSA burn in anesthetized swine compared with the IV infusion of lactated Ringer's infused by Parkland formula. Plasma volume (PV) was measured using indocyanine green dye dilution. Intestinal absorption was assessed using phenol red as a nonabsorbable marker. Changes in hematocrit, hemodynamics, and measured PV s

Recommendations for composition of oral rehydration solutions (ORS) for calves, particularly concerning Na+ , glucose, and their combined effect on tonicity, are not in line with guidelines for humans. Thus, this study aimed to determine the effect of ORS tonicity on water, mineral and acid-base balance. Seventy-two calves were selected based on the severity of dehydration and blood base excess (BE) on day 0. Five calves that did not develop diarrhoea were removed post-inclusion from the study. Calves were allocated to blocks of four animals based on blood BE on day 1. Within each block, calve

The microscopic evaluation of hemorrhagic infiltrates is crucial in forensic diagnostics, but it proves challenging in corificated and mummified cadavers. In these cases, pre-treatment with rehydrating solutions is recommended, although their effects on the hemorrhagic infiltrate are not well understood. In this pilot study, we microscopically investigated the effect of two different rehydrating solutions-Sandison's solution and fabric softener-on well-preserved human cadaveric skin samples taken from areas affected by an ecchymotic lesion, comparing them with direct fixation in formalin. Although both oral rehydration solutions (ORSs) and intravenous fluids (IVFs) were initially developed to treat severe dehydration from diarrhea due to cholera, they are the mainstays of treatment for patients with short bowel syndrome (SBS). Advances in medical care have provided an expansion of new concepts on existing ideas, including adaptations of ORSs, pharmaceutical introductions of new oral and enteral products, and supply chain limitations of intravenous products necessitating the development of novel clinical practices. The evaluation and understanding of a patient's hydration status

A randomized double-blind placebo-controlled study was conducted in children admitted to hospital with gastroenteritis (≥3 loose stools per day). All were treated for 5 days following admission with either zinc (Zn, 3 mg) or without Zn-fortified rice-based oral rehydration solution (ORS). (13)C-sucrose breath test (SBT) and intestinal permeability (lactulose/rhamnose or L/R ratio) were performed concurrently prior to commencement of ORS with or without Zn and at day 5 post-admission. There was a significant improvement in the SBT results in both the Zn-fortified group, median (5th-95th percent

A total of 186 infants, suffering from acute diarrhea were studied and divided into two groups: 84 children were placed in group A and given the ORS recommended by the World Health Organization which contains sodium and glucose at concentrations of 60 and 90 mmol/L respectively and an osmolality of 311 mOsm/kg (mmol/kg) (ORS-90). Group B included 82 children who received an ORS containing sodium and glucose at concentrations of 60 and 90 mmol/L respectively and with an osmolality of 240 mOsm/kg (mmol/kg) (ORS-60). Seven belonging to group A (8.3%) required intravenous rehydration due to the se

The aim of this field study was to compare the efficacy and cost of 2 commercially available oral rehydration therapy (ORT) solutions in treating dairy calves with naturally acquired diarrhea. A total of 1,349 newborn Holstein-Friesian calves were prospectively enrolled in the study. Calves were housed in individual hutches and fed a mixture of pasteurized hospital milk and an all-milk protein milk replacer twice per day. Calves were monitored twice each day from d 2 of life until 30 d of age for the presence or absence of diarrhea, and were assigned a fecal score and a hydration score at each

The clinical response and changes in water and salt homeostasis were studied during oral rehydration therapy (ORT) with a solution containing 90 mmol sodium per 1 (ORS90) in 9 infants less than 2 months old (range 2-60 days). Two infants were still dehydrated 36 hours after starting ORT and were excluded from the study. Fluid was retained more rapidly and also to a larger extent than in infants of the same age treated with a solution with a sodium concentration of 60 mmol/l (ORS60). The stool sodium output was higher than that found previously in infants of the same age treated with ORS60. We

BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy inadvertently affects gastrointestinal (GI) epithelial cells, causing intestinal barrier disruption and increased permeability.
OBJECTIVE: We examined the effect of amino acid-based oral rehydration solution (AA-ORS) on radiation-induced changes of intestinal barrier function and epithelial tight junctions (TJs) in a randomized experimental study using a total-body irradiation (TBI) mouse model.
METHODS: Eight-week-old male Swiss mice received a single-dose TBI (0, 1, 3, or 5 Gy), and subsequent gastric gavage with AA-ORS (threonine, valine, serine, tyrosine, and asp

BACKGROUND: In Bangladesh, pharmacy-purchased oral rehydration solution (ORS) is often used to treat diarrhea, including cholera. Over-the-counter sales have been used for epidemiologic surveillance in the past, but rarely, if ever, in low-income countries. With few early indicators for cholera outbreaks in endemic areas, diarrhea-related product sales may serve as a useful surveillance tool.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We tracked daily ORS sales at 50 pharmacies and drug-sellers in an urban Bangladesh community of 129,000 for 6-months while simultaneously conducting surveillance for diar

Diarrhea like cholera remains a leading cause of mortality and morbidity globally. Oral rehydration solution (ORS) that developed in 1970s significantly decreases diarrhea mortality; yet, it does not reduce diarrhea morbidity and its usage has reduced persistently. Patients with diarrhea lose not only monovalent ions Na+, K+, Cl- and HCO3, which are replaced via ORS, but also divalent ions Zn2+ and Ca2+, which are not routinely replaced, particularly for Ca2+. Using several in vitro technologies performed in isolated tissues, we have previously shown that Ca2+, a primary ligand that activates
