Hikikomori is increasingly recognized as heterogeneous; however, how behavioral functions relate to clinically important targets (e.g., functional impairment and social-evaluative anxiety) remains unclear. We identified latent hikikomori profiles by integrating behavioral topography and functions and characterized their clinical profiles. The study recruited Japanese adults aged 18-59 using an online panel, comprising 200 participants each in the hikikomori and control groups, respectively. Latent profile analysis was conducted using three functional indicators from the Hikikomori Functional A

Hikikomori is a condition of prolonged social withdrawal (at least six months) characterized by not working or attending school, not socializing outside one's home, and staying at home on most days except for solitary outings. Currently, there are no adequate tools for the assessment of individual differences in hikikomori functions. This study involved the development of the Hikikomori Functional Assessment Scale (HFAS), which quantitatively assesses the perceived functions of hikikomori. Three data samples were collected at different time periods and included 490 participants with hikikomori

Rats were given repeated choices between social and nonsocial outcomes, and between familiar and unfamiliar social outcomes. Lever presses on either of 2 levers in the middle chamber of a 3-chamber apparatus opened a door adjacent to the lever, permitting 45-s access to social interaction with the rat in the chosen side chamber. In Experiment 1, rats preferred (a) social over nonsocial options, choosing their cagemate rat over an empty chamber, and (b) an unfamiliar over a familiar rat, choosing a non-cagemate over their cagemate. These findings were replicated in Experiment 2 with 2 different

The relevance of social relationships to the phenomena of depression among the aged was examined. The study was based on the reduced reinforcement hypothesis which predicts a low rate of social relationships (i.e. the loss of positive reinforcement) for those individuals who are prone to depression. This hypothesis was both tested and confirmed among the residents in homes for the aged in Berlin. The senior citizens who reported a low rate of social activities had higher depression scores than those reporting a higher rate of such social involvement. These results were confirmed for various in

This study compared the outcomes of three descriptive analysis methods-the ABC method, the conditional probability method, and the conditional and background probability method-to each other and to the results obtained from functional analyses. Six individuals who had been diagnosed with developmental delays and exhibited problem behavior participated. Functional analyses indicated that participants' problem behavior was maintained by social positive reinforcement (n = 2), social negative reinforcement (n = 2), or automatic reinforcement (n = 2). Results showed that for all but 1 participant,

BACKGROUND: Effective behavior guidance in pediatric dentistry depends on both clinical technique and effective communication with parents. Understanding which techniques parents prefer, and how these preferences relate to demographics and dental anxiety, is essential for guiding clinician-parent and supporting informed decision-making. OBJECTIVE: To assess the acceptance of twelve behavior-guidance techniques (BGTs) among Egyptian parents of younger (3–6 years) and older (7–12 years) children. Additionally, the study aimed to examine whether parental acceptance is influenced by reported level

BACKGROUND: Traumatic stress can disrupt the adolescent gut-brain axis, and unintentional social reinforcement can lead to highly impairing disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI). However, social support is critical during the peritraumatic period, highlighting a unique challenge for caregivers and practitioners. The current study examined the ways in which post-trauma gastrointestinal concerns were discussed via online social messaging (e.g., texting, social media) among a sample of trauma-exposed adolescent patients.
METHODS: One hundred ninety-one trauma-exposed adolescents were recruit

We previously reported, using in-vivo fiber photometry, that operant responding reinforced by access to a peer (social self-administration) is associated with phasic dopamine increases in nucleus accumbens (NAc) core following lever insertion (reward-availability cue) and gradual increases preceding lever-pressing. Here, we sought to replicate these findings and determine whether dopamine signals (1) generalize to responding for high-carbohydrate palatable food, (2) show opposite patterns during negative reinforcement (shock avoidance/escape), and (3) depend on whether reinforcers are experien

Analog baselines are an experimental methodology for identifying the functions of maladaptive behavior in the naturally occurring environment (Iwata, Dorsey, Slifer, Bauman, & Richman, 1982; Iwata et al., 1994). This article identifies a number of potential limitations in this methodology. These include: (a) procedural problems inherent in the use of multielement designs, (b) the fidelity of analog baseline design conditions, (c) the relation of the analog conditions to the naturally occurring environment, (d) a narrow analysis of behavior limited by an implicit adherence to an ABC model of be

Functional communication training (FCT) is a commonly used and effective treatment for problem behavior maintained by social reinforcement (e.g., an individual engages in self-injurious behavior to gain access to adult attention). FCT involves teaching an individual to emit an appropriate communication response to access the reinforcer maintaining problem behavior (e.g., pressing a "Play, please" symbol on a device to gain the communication partner's attention) and withholding that reinforcer following problem behavior (e.g., the communication partner minimizes attention-following problem beha

A three-part controlled case study is presented in which severe and longstanding self-injurious behavior exhibited by a 9-year-old-boy was treated successfully with differential reinforcement of other behavior. In Phase 1, an experimental analysis demonstrated that the boy's scratching was not maintained by environmental contingencies; instead, it appeared that the self-injurious behavior was a stereotypic (automatically reinforced) response. In Phase 2, the effects of an escalating differential-reinforcement-of-other-behavior schedule mediated through token reinforcement (pennies) were evalua

The biological origins of meditation in humans remain underexplored, despite extensive scholarship on its cultural history and health effects. We present a theoretical account that traces the origins of meditation to the evolutionarily conserved repertoire of defensive freezing. We propose that this ancient survival response-characterized by motoric immobility, heightened vigilance with narrowed attentional focus, and bradycardia-provided a behavioral, neural, and physiological substrate upon which operant and social reinforcement could act. Over evolutionary time, these response components ma

Perceptions by staff of the classes of reinforcers and aberrant behaviors of a sample of 470 people with predominantly severe or profound mental retardation were explored. Principal components analysis of a 45-item survey suggested eight classes of reinforcers: consumable, verbal-speaker, visual-motor, social, physical-contact, passive-observer, play, and academic reinforcers. Stepwise multiple regression was used to predict five classes of maladaptive behaviors as measured by the Aberrant Behavior Checklist (irritability, lethargy, stereotypy, hyperactivity, and inappropriate speech) from the

Interpersonal and trust-related difficulties are central features of borderline personality disorder (BPD). In this study, we applied script-driven betrayal imagery to evoke mistrustful behavior in a social reinforcement learning task. In 21 BPD and 20 healthy control (HC) participants, we compared this approach to the standard confederate paradigm used in research studies. The script-driven imagery evoked a transient increase in negative affect and also decreased trusting behavior to a similar degree in both groups. Across conditions, we also replicated previously reported between-group diffe

Restrictive eating is common and associated with negative psychological outcomes across the life span and eating disorder (ED) severity levels. Little is known about functional processes that maintain restriction, especially outside of narrow diagnostic categories (e.g., anorexia nervosa). Here, we extend research on operant four-function models (identifying automatic negative, automatic positive, social negative, and social positive reinforcement functions) that have previously been applied to nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), binge eating, and purging to restricting. We assessed restrictive ea

IMPORTANCE: Tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable deaths and is susceptible to social influence. Yet, we know little about the characteristics of primary care social networks and how they influence tobacco use.
OBJECTIVE: To determine what primary care patient social network characteristics are associated with individual smoking behavior.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional.
SETTING: Two primary care practices in West Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (PA), USA.
PARTICIPANTS: A random sample of 53 primary care patients and 155 of their nominated social ties.
MAIN OUTCOME AND MEASURES: We exam

Social structure social learning theory (SSSL) is a theoretical framework that has been used to understand gender differences in substance use. However, the Latinx community remains understudied in this body of research. Drawing on a Latinx college student sample, we tested the extent to which four social learning mechanisms specified by SSSL theory (positive definitions, neutralizing definitions, differential association, and differential reinforcement) explained gender differences in three substance use outcomes: alcohol intoxication, marijuana use, and illicit prescription drug use. We foun

When humans buy a lottery ticket or gamble at a casino they are engaging in an activity that on average leads to a loss of money. Although animals are purported to engage in optimal foraging behavior, similar sub-optimal behavior can be found in pigeons. They show a preference for an alternative that is associated with a low probability of reinforcement (e.g., one that is followed by a red hue on 20% of the trials and then reinforcement or by a green hue on 80% of the trials and then the absence of reinforcement) over an alternative that is associated with a higher probability of reinforcement
