Adenosine deaminase enzyme therapy prevents and reverses the heightened cavernosal relaxation in priapism.

INTRODUCTION: Priapism featured with painful prolonged penile erection is dangerous and commonly seen in sickle cell disease (SCD). The preventive approaches or effective treatment options for the disorder are limited because of poor understanding of its pathogenesis. Recent studies have revealed a novel role of excess adenosine in priapism caused by heightened cavernosal relaxation, and therefore present an intriguing mechanism-based therapeutic possibility. AIM: The aim of this study was to determine the therapeutic effects of adenosine deaminase (ADA) enzyme therapy to lower adenosine in p

Is relaxation exercise therapy effective in the management of patients with severe arterial hypertension?

Arterial hypertension (AH) is a burning problem in the world. Antihypertensive pharmacological therapy combined by physical exercises is well-studied in patients with mild and moderate AH. However, studies that have investigated relaxation in patients with severe AH in addition to drug therapy are lacking. Optimization of a comprehensive treatment for patients with severe AH, by using a multicomponent rational antihypertensive pharmacotherapy (PT) with subsequent application of relaxation exercise therapy (RET). The study involved 32 male patients with severe AH. Initially, clinical-instrument

An evaluation of the effectiveness of relaxation therapy for patients receiving joint replacement surgery.

AIM AND OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of relaxation therapy on reducing patient anxiety and pain before and after total joint replacement. BACKGROUND: Despite the use of analgesics, patients may feel anxiety and pain before and after surgery, delaying their recovery. DESIGN: An experimental control group pretest-post-test quasi-experimental design was employed. METHOD: Subjects (n = 93) recruited from a medical centre in Taipei, Taiwan, from November 2006-March 2007 were randomly assigned to experimental (n = 45) and control (n = 48) groups. Subjects in the experimental group received re

Is cognitive-behavioural therapy more effective than relaxation therapy in the treatment of anxiety disorders? A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: It is not clear whether relaxation therapies are more or less effective than cognitive and behavioural therapies in the treatment of anxiety. The aims of the present study were to examine the effects of relaxation techniques compared to cognitive and behavioural therapies in reducing anxiety symptoms, and whether they have comparable efficacy across disorders. METHOD: We conducted a meta-analysis of 50 studies (2801 patients) comparing relaxation training with cognitive and behavioural treatments of anxiety. RESULTS: The overall effect size (ES) across all anxiety outcomes, with

Naturalistic psychedelic therapy: The role of relaxation and subjective drug effects in antidepressant response.

BACKGROUND: Psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT) is permitted in Switzerland under its limited medical use program. Data from patients in this program represent a unique opportunity to analyze the real-world practice of PAT. AIMS: This study compared the subjective effects of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) and psilocybin between patients undergoing PAT and healthy volunteers. For the patients, it also investigated the relationship between antidepressant effects and six measures of acute drug effects. METHODS: We compared data on acute psychedelic drug effects between 28 PAT patients with dat

The effectiveness of interventions using relaxation therapy to improve breastfeeding outcomes: A systematic review.

Maternal psychological state is recognised to influence lactation success, largely by affecting milk ejection. Thus, increased psychological distress can disrupt milk flow and in the long-term, affect milk synthesis. Conversely, it is possible that milk ejection could be improved by using relaxation therapy during breastfeeding. We performed a systematic review to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions using relaxation therapy to improve breastfeeding outcomes and to assess the consequent impact(s) on infant growth and behaviour. A literature search was performed using the PRISMA guidelin

Specificity of treatment effects: cognitive therapy and relaxation for generalized anxiety and panic disorders.

The aim of this study was to address claims that among bona fide treatments no one is more efficacious than another by comparing the relative efficacy of cognitive therapy (CT) and relaxation therapy (RT) in the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and panic disorder without agoraphobia (PD). Two fixed-effects meta-analyses were conducted, for GAD and PD separately, to review the treatment outcome literature directly comparing CT with RT in the treatment of those disorders. For GAD, CT and RT were equivalent. For PD, CT, which included interoceptive exposure, outperformed RT on all

Cognitive therapy versus exposure and applied relaxation in social phobia: A randomized controlled trial.

A new cognitive therapy (CT) program was compared with an established behavioral treatment. Sixty-two patients meeting Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.; American Psychiatric Association, 1994) criteria for social phobia were randomly assigned to CT, exposure plus applied relaxation (EXP = AR), or wait-list (WAIT). CT and EXP = AR were superior to WAIT on all measures. On measures of social phobia, CT led to greater improvement than did EXP = AR. Percentages of patients who no longer met diagnostic criteria for social phobia at posttreatment-wait were as follows: 8

Meditation-Relaxation (MR Therapy) for Sleep Paralysis: A Pilot Study in Patients With Narcolepsy.

Sleep paralysis (SP) is a condition where a person is paralyzed upon waking or falling asleep. SP afflicts ~20% of people, and is also one of the typical symptoms in narcolepsy. During SP the sleeper may experience hallucinations. Unsurprisingly, SP is associated with great fear globally. To date, there are no published clinical trials or outcome data for treating this condition. However, few non-pharmacological interventions have been proposed, including cognitive behavioral approaches, and case studies showing clinical amelioration with auto-hypnosis and Meditation-Relaxation (MR) therapy. The impact of exposure, relaxation, and rescripting therapy for post-trauma nightmares on suicidal ideation.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated whether a brief psychotherapy for post-trauma nightmares (exposure, relaxation, and rescripting therapy [ERRT]), reduced suicidal ideation (SI). We hypothesized that: (a) nightmare frequency and severity, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and sleep quality would be related to SI at pretreatment; (b) SI would decrease from pre- to post-treatment; and (c) the decrease in SI would remain after controlling for change in PTSD and depression. METHOD: Seventy-five individuals exposed to a traumatic event and who experienced frequent nightmares (min

Proteomic changes induced by anaesthesia and muscle relaxant treatment prior to electroconvulsive therapy.

PURPOSE: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a psychiatric treatment in which seizures are electrically induced in patients. Prior to treatment, patients are usually given short-acting anaesthetics and muscle relaxants to avoid harm, e.g. musculoskeletal injury, during the convulsions. However, most molecular studies investigating the mechanism of action of ECT have not explored the potential effects of the pre-treatment with anaesthetic and/ or muscle relaxant. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: We have carried out a targeted proteome analysis using multiplex immunoassay platform of serum samples before an

The effect of music, therapy, and relaxation on adrenal corticosteroids and the re-entrainment of circadian rhythms.

The purpose of this study was to measure the effects of music, progressive muscle relaxation (PMR), and guided imagery (GI) on the adrenal corticosteroids, or "stress hormones." Hypotheses were designed to evaluate the effect of a taped induction of music/PMR/GI on the mean level (1), circadian amplitude (2), and circadian re-entrainment with body temperature (3) of urinary corticosteroids. Urine collections and body temperature were recorded in shift-working nurses during three 4-5 day intervals over a 1-month period. The nurses listened to the tape on a daily basis, commencing after the firs

Rocuronium-sugammadex as an alternative muscle relaxant to succinylcholine in electroconvulsive therapy: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) requires optimal muscle relaxation, which is conventionally achieved with succinylcholine (SCC) despite its adverse effects. In this context, rocuronium-sugammadex (RS) has emerged as a potential alternative, but its comparative efficacy remains uncertain. Hence, this meta-analysis evaluated the recovery times, seizure duration, and safety of these agents in ECT. AIM: To compare the recovery times, seizure duration, and side effect profiles of RS and SCC in ECT. METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library (from inception to June 2025) were system
