Neural basis for priming of pop-out during visual search revealed with fMRI.

Maljkovic and Nakayama first showed that visual search efficiency can be influenced by priming effects. Even "pop-out" targets (defined by unique color) are judged quicker if they appear at the same location and/or in the same color as on the preceding trial, in an unpredictable sequence. Here, we studied the potential neural correlates of such priming in human visual search using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We found that repeating either the location or the color of a singleton target led to repetition suppression of blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) activity in brain regi

Object identification leads to a conceptual broadening of object representations in lateral prefrontal cortex.

Recent experience identifying objects leads to later improvements in both speed and accuracy ("repetition priming"), along with simultaneous reductions of neural activity ("repetition suppression"). A popular interpretation of these joint behavioral and neural phenomena is that object representations become perceptually "sharper" with stimulus repetition, eliminating cells that are poorly stimulus-selective and responsive and reducing support for competing representations downstream. Here, we test this hypothesis in an fMRI-adaptation experiment using pictures of objects. Prior to fMRI, partic

Impaired word-stem completion priming but intact perceptual identification priming with novel words: evidence from the amnesic patient H.M.

We hypothesized that word-stem completion (WSC) priming and perceptual identification (PI) priming, two types of repetition priming, rely on different cognitive and neural mechanisms: WSC priming on a modification mechanism that influences lexical retrieval, and PI priming on plasticity in pre-lexical perceptual systems. We compared the priming performance of the amnesic patient H.M. with words that came into common usage after the onset of his amnesia, and thus were novel to him (post-1965 words), and with familiar (pre-1953) words. We also tested age- and education-matched normal control sub

Repetition-related reductions in neural activity support improved behavior through increases in oscillatory power.

Repeatedly processing an object leads to subsequent behavioral improvements in its identification and reductions in associated neural activity, a form of neural processing efficiency that multiple theoretical models have attempted to explain. Using simultaneous EEG/fMRI in humans during object naming, we find that stimulus-driven oscillatory power from high (gamma) to low frequencies (theta) increases and resolves earlier with repetition in task-engaged frontal and occipitotemporal brain regions identified as showing repetition suppression in fMRI. Repetition-related increases and decreases in

The steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) reflects the activation of cortical object representations: evidence from semantic stimulus repetition.

We applied high-density EEG to examine steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs) during a perceptual/semantic stimulus repetition design. SSVEPs are evoked oscillatory cortical responses at the same frequency as visual stimuli flickered at this frequency. In repetition designs, stimuli are presented twice with the repetition being task irrelevant. The cortical processing of the second stimulus is commonly characterized by decreased neuronal activity (repetition suppression). The behavioral consequences of stimulus repetition were examined in a companion reaction time pre-study using the s

Priming of pop-out: II. The role of position.

In an earlier paper (Maljkovic & Nakayama, 1994) we showed that repetition of an attention-driving feature primes the deployment of attention to the same feature on subsequent trials. Here we show that repetition of the target position also primes subsequent trials. Position priming shows a characteristic spatial pattern. Facilitation occurs when the target position is repeated on subsequent trials, and inhibition occurs when the target falls on a position previously occupied by a distractor. Facilitation and inhibition also exist, though somewhat diminished, for positions adjacent to those of

Testing the direct-access model: GOD does not prime DOG.

In three repetition priming experiments that employed identical (e.g., DOG-DOG) and reversed repetitions (e.g., GOD-DOG), it was found that relative to controls (e.g., DOG-DOG), GOD-type words did not prime DOG-type words. Also, neither DUT-type nor TUD-type nonwords primed DUT-type nonwords. In Experiments 1 and 2, these results occurred using both long- and short-term repetition priming conditions, respectively. In Experiment 3, the word results held under conditions of short-term priming coupled with stimulus misorientation. However, the nonword results resembled the word results (i.e., ide

A dissociation between perceptual explicit and implicit memory processes.

Patient M.S., who underwent right-occipital lobe resection to treat intractable epilepsy, has intact recall and recognition memory for words, but impaired repetition priming in word identification and visual stem-completion tasks. This mirror dissociation to amnesia suggests that explicit recognition and visuoperceptual repetition priming are mediated by distinct neural systems. In prior studies, however, M.S.' recognition memory was tested only with tasks that drew upon his intact verbal knowledge. The present study examined M.S.' recognition memory for nonverbal perceptual information, namel

Temporal Characteristics of Priming of Attention Shifts Are Mirrored by BOLD Response Patterns in the Frontoparietal Attention Network.

Priming of attention shifts involves the reduction in search RTs that occurs when target location or target features repeat. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate the neural basis of such attentional priming, specifically focusing on its temporal characteristics over trial sequences. We first replicated earlier findings by showing that repetition of target color and of target location from the immediately preceding trial both result in reduced blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) signals in a cortical network that encompasses occipital, parietal, and frontal cortices: lag

Neural basis of implicit memory for socio-emotional information in schizophrenia.

Individuals with schizophrenia are impaired in processing social signals such as facial expressions of emotion. Perceiving facial expressions is a complex process that depends on a distributed neural network of regions involved in affective, cognitive, and visual processing. We examined repetition priming, a non-conscious form of perceptual learning, to explore the visual-perceptual processes associated with perceiving facial expression in people with schizophrenia. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was also employed to probe the sensitivity of face-responsive regions in the ventral

Priming effects in the fusiform gyrus: changes in neural activity beyond the second presentation.

Repetition priming typically leads to a decrease in the activation of sensory cortical areas upon a second exposure to the same visual stimulus. This effect is thought to reflect more efficient or fluent re-processing of previously seen stimuli so that less neural activity is required. Fluent re-processing has been hypothesized to be a potential link from repetition priming to neural changes associated with visual expertise. To examine this potential connection, the neural correlates of priming were examined across eight stimulus repetitions using functional magnetic resonance imaging. Sizeabl

Field repetition and local mapping in the hippocampus and the medial entorhinal cortex.

Hippocampal place cells support spatial cognition and are thought to form the neural substrate of a global "cognitive map." A widely held view is that parts of the hippocampus also underlie the ability to separate patterns or to provide different neural codes for distinct environments. However, a number of studies have shown that in environments composed of multiple, repeating compartments, place cells and other spatially modulated neurons show the same activity in each local area. This repetition of firing fields may reflect pattern completion and may make it difficult for animals to distingu

Drinkers' memory bias for alcohol picture cues in explicit and implicit memory tasks.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol cues can bias attention and elicit emotional reactions, especially in drinkers. Yet, little is known about how alcohol cues affect explicit and implicit memory processes, and how memory for alcohol cues is affected by acute alcohol intoxication. METHODS: Young adult participants (N=161) were randomly assigned to alcohol, placebo, or control beverage conditions. Following beverage consumption, they were shown neutral, emotional and alcohol-related pictures cues. Participants then completed free recall and repetition priming tasks to test explicit and implicit memory, respec

ERP abnormalities elicited by word repetition in fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome (FXTAS) and amnestic MCI.

BACKGROUND: Fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome (FXTAS), a neurodegenerative disorder caused by FMR1 gene premutations, typically associated with frontal-subcortical type cognitive impairments. High prevalence (~50%) of superimposed Alzheimer׳s pathology has been reported in FMR1 premutation carriers, and standardized neuropsychological tests have not yielded any robust discriminators between FXTAS and Alzheimer׳s disease (AD) dementia. The similarities/differences in memory processes between FXTAS and early AD remain underexplored. METHODS: 32-channel event-related potentials (ERPs)

Electrophysiology of facilitation priming in obsessive-compulsive and panic disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Repeated experience with stimuli often primes faster, more efficient neuronal and behavioural responses. Exaggerated repetition priming effects have previously been reported in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), however little is known of their underlying neurobiology or disorder-specificity, hence we investigated these factors. METHODS: We examined event-related potentials (ERPs) and behaviour while participants with OCD, panic disorder and healthy controls (20 per group) performed a Go/NoGo task which manipulated target repetition sequences. RESULTS: Both clinical groups showe

Once in a blue Mooney! Using the effects of prior exposure to elicit qualitative differences in naming of multi-identity images.

We investigated the extent to which repetition priming can elicit qualitative differences in identification of a stimulus with multiple identities. In an exposure phase, participants viewed images of objects from one of two stimulus sets (A or B). In a naming phase, participants viewed superMooney stimuli (for 6 s each), comprising perceptually degraded (Mooney) versions of the A and B images superimposed in distinct colours, and attempted to name both. Across four experiments with university students (Ns = 51, 60, 61, 59), rates of correct naming of previously exposed components exceeded thos

Contributions of right inferior temporal-occipital cortex to visual word and non-word priming.

Little is known about the neural substrates of indirect forms of memory such as priming. Electrophysiological (ERP) and behavioral data were recorded from controls and three patients with damage in the right parahippocampal and lingual gyri, with variable extension into posterior hippocampus and striate/extrastriate cortex. Visually presented words and non-words were repeated after one of three delays in a lexical decision task. The late positive ERP deflection related to stimulus repetition was diminished at all scalp sites, suggesting dysfunction in a neural system associated with priming. T

Orthographic Priming in Braille Reading as Evidence for Task-specific Reorganization in the Ventral Visual Cortex of the Congenitally Blind.

The task-specific principle asserts that, following deafness or blindness, the deprived cortex is reorganized in a manner such that the task of a given area is preserved even though its input modality has been switched. Accordingly, tactile reading engages the ventral occipitotemporal cortex (vOT) in the blind in a similar way to regular reading in the sighted. Others, however, show that the vOT of the blind processes spoken sentence structure, which suggests that the task-specific principle might not apply to vOT. The strongest evidence for the vOT's engagement in sighted reading comes from o

Processing of task-irrelevant natural scenes in social anxiety.

In this study, by manipulating perceptual load, we investigated whether socially anxious people process task-irrelevant, non-emotional, natural scenes. When attention was directed to letters and perceptual load was low, task-irrelevant natural scenes were processed, as evidenced by repetition priming effects, in both high and low socially anxious people. In the high perceptual load condition, repetition-priming effects decreased in participants with low social anxiety, but not in those with high social anxiety. The results were the same when attention was directed to pictures of animals: even

Associative Activation and Its Relation to Exploration and Exploitation in the Brain.

Associative activation is commonly assumed to rely on associative strength, such that if A is strongly associated with B, B is activated whenever A is activated. We challenged this assumption by examining whether the activation of associations is state dependent. In three experiments, subjects performed a free-association task while the level of a simultaneous load was manipulated in various ways. In all three experiments subjects in the low-load conditions provided significantly more diverse and original associations compared with subjects in the high-load conditions, who exhibited high conse
