In certain cases, emergency care begins even before emergency medical services arrive on the scene, as bystanders take immediate action. Dispatchers play a key role in supporting lay responders, yet their responsibility often remains unrecognized. The aim of this summary was to examine the cooperation between dispatchers and lay first aid providers from various perspectives. Advancements in technology are significantly improving prehospital care. The emergence of structured decision-support software, video-assisted resuscitation, and artificial intelligence-based systems can considerably enhan

Avalanche accidents in which winter sports enthusiasts are involved have significantly increased but the number of deaths remains stable due to better prevention and rescue. Avalanche accidents are frequent in mountainous regions and there are around 100 fatalities each year in Europe. The chances of survival are mainly determined by the degree and duration of avalanche burial, a possible airway obstruction, the presence of an air pocket, the snow characteristics and possible severe injuries. The most frequent cause of death is asphyxia, followed by trauma. Hypothermia accounts for only a mino

Because of its peculiar geographic location beneath Mont-Blanc, the Chamonix Hospital plays an important role in the management of mountaineering- and skiing-related traumatic injuries. The authors, thanks to the study of 5200 mountain rescue medical reports, set out to explain the different aspects of this activity: epidemiology, specific equipment, care in the field, reception and primary survey, dispatching, common therapeutic attitudes, progress, and results. In the dangerous environment of the high mountains, emphasis is put on the physicians' experience, allowing an early evacuation in t

Hazardous materials releases can cause substantial morbidity and mortality, but very few studies have systemically investigated them. We analyzed responses by Massachusetts' six district hazardous materials (HAZMAT) teams from the time of their inception through February 1994. Spills, leaks, and other escapes of materials caused or contributed to 67 of 85 (79%) incidents. Transportation-related accidents accounted for 13 of 83 (16%), whereas the remainder of the releases occurred at fixed facilities. The chemicals most frequently involved were various hydrocarbons and corrosive materials. Most

OBJECTIVE: Helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) and search and rescue operations represent the intersection of aviation complexity and clinical criticality. Despite technological advances in simulation, most training programs remain fragmented across aviation and medical domains, failing to integrate the human factors that determine mission success. This program report describes the longitudinal development of an integrated HEMS simulation training system, from early low-fidelity cabin prototypes to contemporary multi-sensory and hybrid simulation environments, and proposes a systems a

The utilization of rescue blankets in pre-hospital emergency medicine exceeds protection from hypothermia and enhanced visibility by far. In this narrative review, we focus on emphasizing the alternative applications of these fascinating multifunctional tools in the pre-hospital setting. A literature search in PubMed® and Web of ScienceTM yielded 100 results (last update was on 8 July 2022), a total number of 26 of which were included in this narrative review. Nine articles assessing alternative functions of rescue blanket were further evaluated and described in more detail. In addition, we pe

Emergencies and disasters affect all segments of the population. Some segments are more at risk during the emergency response and recovery efforts owing to vulnerabilities that increase the risk of harm. These vulnerabilities are due to individuals' disabilities, which must be incorporated into emergency and business continuity planning. Some disabilities are obvious, such as impaired vision, hearing or mobility, while other are less evident, but equally disabling, such as cognitive disorders, geographical or language isolation, and numerous age-related factors. Taken together when creating em

ObjectiveTo understand how prior expectations and instructions about hazard prevalence affect high-stakes visual search in a semi-immersive virtual environment, where participants take on the role of firefighters in search and rescue missions.BackgroundInformation about target prevalence influences visual search in standard laboratory studies. However, little is known about how prior expectations and new information about target prevalence interact in simulated emergency scenarios.MethodsParticipants (n = 48) received training where the average number of hazards (explosive cylinders) amongst s

When exposed to actual or threatened death or serious injury in austere settings, expedition members are at risk of acute stress reactions, as are search and rescue members involved with extricating the patient. Acute stress reactions are a normal response to significant trauma and commonly resolve on their own. If they do not, they can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a set of persistent symptoms that cause significant effects on the person's life. Medication has a limited preventive role in the field for treatment of stress partly because so few are trained to administer it. Co

BACKGROUND: Wildlife rescue centres care for orphaned and injured young as an integral part of their work. However, inappropriate interventions in nature can have a negative effect on the survival of young hares, especially when the care of these young is not very successful. The aim of this study was to assess the number of brown hare leverets admitted to rescue centres in the Czech Republic in the period from 2010 to 2019, the causes of their admission to rescue centres and their outcomes.
RESULTS: We evaluated the number of brown hare leverets admitted to rescue centres in the Czech Republ

While deaths caused by interactions with dogs in medico-legal situations most often involve trauma from attacks, in certain circumstances, deaths may occur from sharing environmental hazards that the animal has been exposed to during attempted rescues. Search of the Forensic Science South Australia (FSSA), Australia, autopsy database over a 16-year period from 2004 to 2020 found three such cases, including two women aged 46 and 61 years who were both killed in separate incidents after being struck by vehicles when they attempted to rescue dogs that had strayed onto busy roads. The final case w

When facing a disaster outside of hospitals, physicians have to work in unfamiliar surroundings. Self-protection is the first priority: be aware of possible dangers of traffic, explosions, electricity, structural collapse and toxic gas. Arriving first, one should safe the scene of accident (e.g. breakdown triagle, turn off electricity) and try to get a general idea of what has occured. After that, call the rescue services (in Switzerland dial 144). Only once this ist done, should one begin treating patients. If the rescue services are at scene, look for the commander, usually fitted out with a

The objective of this work was to inform about the performance of the rescue service, in collaboration with other members of an integrated rescue system, in responding to an event in which several subjects suffered burn injuries. Proper organization of the work by a doctor of the rescue group at the site of the explosion, the work of the rescue service dispatchers, and the coordination of the activities of the different rescue teams are the prerequisite for the successful avoidance of the sequelae of mass disasters.

INTRODUCTION: Casualties with accidental hypothermia are evacuated using multilayer wraps, typically including a chemical heat blanket (CHB), a vapor barrier, and an insulating outer bag. We investigated CHB performance against dry, damp, and wet fabric, in a multilayer wrap, in response to a case report indicating diminished performance when wet.
METHODS: We wrapped a torso manikin in a base layer, CHB, vapor barrier, casualty bag, and vacuum mattress, recording CHB panel temperatures at intervals of up to 7 h. Experimental conditions were dry, damp, and wet clothing, with 2 blankets tested

OBJECTIVE: Mine rescue teams bear a high risk of injury. To improve medical emergency preparedness and injury prevention, this work analyzed the causes and severity of mine rescue teams' casualty incidents, the primary injuries, and the link between the causes and the occurrences of the casualty incidents.
METHODS: A total of 81 cases from 1953 to 2013 were used to analyze the casualty incidents of mine rescue teams based on the frequency of accidents. A panel with 4 rescue experts was set up to ensure the accuracy of the analysis.
RESULTS: The 81 casualty incidents occurred in 7 types of re

When an F3 tornado severely damaged a hospital in Americus, GA, all patients had to be evacuated through the emergency department. Fifty-three patients were evacuated by area ambulances and a school bus to other hospitals in the region. The hospital advises others to have an internal evacuation plan as well as two-way radios, a megaphone to direct staff and volunteers, and additional security. A temporary treatment area was set up at a local church.

As winter backcountry activity increases, so does exposure to avalanche danger. A complicated situation arises when multiple victims are caught in an avalanche and where medical and other rescue demands overwhelm resources in the field. These mass casualty incidents carry a high risk of morbidity and mortality, and there is no recommended approach to patient care specific to this setting other than basic first aid principles. The literature is limited with regard to triaging systems applicable to avalanche incidents. In conjunction with the development of an electronic avalanche rescue trainin

Approximately 3,200 L of water were inoculated with Cryptosporidium oocysts and Giardia cysts. The contaminated water was filtered through a Berkefeld Filter, type TWA 3, as used by the Norwegian army. Nine 10-L samples of filtered water and four 10-L control samples of unfiltered water were analyzed for Cryptosporidium oocysts and Giardia cysts. On average, 1,920 Giardia cysts and 2,735 Cryptosporidium oocysts per 10 L were detected in the unfiltered water. Between 0 and 2 Giardia cysts and between 2 and 47 Cryptosporidium oocysts were detected in the filtered 10-L samples. Percentage removal
