How to expand the method details in your Cell Press paper with step-by-step STAR Protocols.

Publishing a primary research article is typically the result of a collaborative effort between a variety of researchers across differing career stages. STAR Protocols can complement a research article and empower authors to share the expertise they contributed to the larger study. In this Backstory, we interview members of the Gennarino lab, who published a Cell paper and four protocols, covering bioinformatics, culturing of patient-derived cell lines, neuroimaging from mouse brain sections and primary neurons, and mouse seizure recordings. For more information on the protocols related to thi

Recruitment Strategies To Improve Gender Equity in Clinical and Translational Research Training in Ethiopia.

Women from sub-Saharan Africa, including Ethiopia, are underrepresented in biomedical research due in part to limited access to high-quality research training and mentorship. Tuberculosis (TB) is a major public health problem in Ethiopia, with a limited number of female Ethiopian scientists engaged in TB-related research. To improve access to TB-related research training among junior women scientists, our NIH Fogarty International Center-funded D43 program released an all-women request for applications (RFA), which substantially increased the number of women applying for research training and

Equitable Research Funding: Strategies, Challenges and the Role of Funding Agencies.

Ensuring equitable access to research funding is crucial for fostering diversity, innovation and excellence in science. Despite progress, significant disparities remain, with underrepresented researchers-including women, racial and ethnic minorities, LGBTQIA+ individuals and those with disabilities-continuing to receive disproportionately less funding. These disparities not only hinder individual careers but also limit the breadth of perspectives that drive scientific discovery. Through discussions with major funding agencies, including the Dana Foundation, European Research Council (ERC) and

Cultivating the Pride in Microbiology Network.

Rising anti-2SLGBTQIA+ hostility creates a crisis of exclusion in science. Queer and Trans microbiologists often navigate their careers in isolation, facing systemic barriers that limit their retention. To counter this, we established the Pride in Microbiology Network in 2023. Here, we share strategies for building safe, decentralized networks beyond institutional and geographic borders and argue that resilient scientific ecosystems depend on diversity, inclusion, and support structures that enable 2SLGBTQIA+ scientists to remain, connect, and lead.

Global research requires global researchers: Opportunities and challenges for capacity-building.

Inclusive global theories of child development require local researchers who spearhead research within their own communities. This means creating pathways for researchers from underrepresented contexts to lead projects, define priorities, and collaborate as equal partners, rather than merely act as data collectors. This capacity-building holds the promise of generating more accurate and equitable developmental science research.

Fairness and COVID: Conducting research during the crisis.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced Principal Investigators (PIs) to make rapid and unprecedented decisions about ongoing research projects and research teams. Confronted with vague or shifting guidance from institutional administrators and public health officials, PIs nonetheless had to decide whether their projects were "essential," who could conduct on-site "essential" research, how to continue research activities by remote means if possible, and how to safely and effectively manage personnel during the crisis. Based on both narrative comments from a federally sponsored survey of over a thousand N

How are early-career dementia researchers considered and supported on a national level by dementia plans and organizations? An overview of global policy approaches.

INTRODUCTION: Despite representing an essential workforce, it is unclear how global policy efforts target early-career dementia researchers (ECDRs). Thus, this study aimed to provide an overview of policies through which ECDRs are considered and supported by dementia plans and organizations. METHODS: G20 member states were evaluated for their national dementia plan alongside policies of leading dementia organizations. Data targeting support for ECDRs were extracted and subject to content analysis using inductive coding. Findings were categorized and narratively synthesized. RESULTS: Only Chi

Postdoctoral struggles in the Global South: insights from India.

The global postdoctoral community faces many challenges including low pay, irregular benefits, little job security amid cost-of-living hikes, challenges to mental health, and power imbalances. Conclusions from the 2020 and 2023 global postdoctoral surveys by Nature highlighting these struggles are highly skewed towards respondents from the Global North, underrepresenting the Global South. Here, we address the postdoctoral struggles of scholars in the Global South who are more vulnerable due to low-income economy and patriarchal society that discriminates against women. We argue that neglecting

Self-harm and attempted suicide among UK armed forces personnel: results of a cross-sectional survey.

AIMS: Little has been reported on self-harm among the UK Armed Forces, partly due to the difficulties in recording self-harm, within an often-difficult-to-reach population. This study assesses the lifetime prevalence of attempted suicide and self-harm within currently serving and ex-service personnel of the UK Armed Forces. METHODS: Telephone interviews were conducted with 821 personnel who had previously participated in the King's Centre for Military Health Research military health study. Within the telephone interview, participants were asked about attempted suicide and episodes of self-har

Ethical Issues Conducting Research During War and Violent Conflict: A Review.

Global health engagement increasingly occurs in the context of war and violent conflict. Many health-related decisions are made which should be guided by evidence. Health research is needed to provide evidence, yet conducting research in conflict settings raises multiple ethical issues. However, the ethical issues involved in conducting research during war and violent conflict have received insufficient attention. The literature suggests that these ethical issues, while similar to those of research conducted in humanitarian crises, are also distinct. This article provides a review of the ethic

Support from School Personnel and In-School Resources Jointly Moderate the Association Between Identity-Based Harassment and Depressive Symptoms Among Sexual and Gender Diverse Youth.

A growing body of research has found that perceptions of social-emotional support from school personnel and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) in-school resources (e.g., gender and sexuality alliances, inclusive curricula, inclusive sexual education, presence of affirming adults) contribute to sexual and gender diverse youth's (SGDY) positive development. However, no research has investigated how support from school personnel and LGBTQ in-school resources might jointly modify the associations between SGDY's experiences with sexual orientation and gender identity (identity)-

Adapting Experience-Based Co-Design to Disability Research: Co-Producing the CycLink Co-Design Study.

INTRODUCTION: Participatory methods like experience-based co-design (EBCD) can be used to develop complex interventions, but may need adaptations when co-designers include young people with disability, parents and community partners. We aimed to adapt EBCD through co-production by involving people with lived experience of disability as co-researchers. This paper reports the co-produced protocol and reflects on co-researchers' contributions. METHODS: Guided by a six-stage co-production process, we formed a team of co-researchers, academic researchers, co-design convenors and evaluators. A five

Perspectives and ethical considerations for return of genetics and genomics research results: a qualitative study of genomics researchers in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: The return of genetics and genomics research results has been a subject of ongoing global debate. Such feedback is ethically desirable to update participants on research findings particularly those deemed clinically significant. Although there is limited literature, debate continues in African on what constitutes appropriate practice regarding the return of results for genetics and genomics research. This study explored perspectives and ethical considerations of Ugandan genomics researchers regarding the return of genetics and genomics research results. METHODS: This was a qualita
