The family history of children with elective mutism: a research report.

The family history was studied in children with elective mutism. The samples comprised a series of N = 38 children with elective mutism and a control group of N = 31 children with a similar behavioural phenotype, i.e., the combination of an emotional disorder and a developmental disorder of articulation or expressive language. Interviews were performed with the respective mothers. There was a clear excess of the personality trait of taciturnity in first-, second-, and third-degree relatives. Although mutism was reported almost exclusively in the group of relatives of children that manifested e

An overview of the report of the national commission on sleep disorders research.

The National Comission on Sleep Disorder Research evaluated the status of insomnia and other sleep disorders in the US. The Commission found that insomnia is prevalent affecting 20-30 million Americans, has significant morbidity especially related to attention and memory processes and cost the US an estimated $ 15 billion a year. It also estimated that all of these figures should rise significantly by the year 2000. Other sleep disorders (eg, narcolepsy and sleep apnea) although less prevalent have significant costs to patients and society associated with them. The Commission recommended that

Obsessional jealousy: Provisional research criteria and report of 34 cases.

BACKGROUND: Obsessional jealousy is described in DSM-5 under Other Specified Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders, yet operationalized criteria and clinical characterization are lacking. This study aimed to develop and field-test provisional research criteria for obsessional jealousy and describe the clinical features of individuals meeting these criteria. METHODS: Provisional research criteria were developed based on DSM-5 descriptions and applied in a self-referred sample of individuals reporting problematic jealousy (n = 58). Participants underwent structured clinical assessment, inc

Advancing novel HIV prevention intervention research with MSM--meeting report.

HIV continues to exact an enormous toll on society and to disproportionately affect gay and bisexual men and other men who have sex with men (MSM). Innovative prevention interventions are needed to reverse this trend. In August 2009, the U.S. National Institute of Mental Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention convened a meeting of scientists, community representatives, advocates, and federal partners to discuss innovative prevention-intervention science. The meeting was structured to maximize discussion of (1) healthy sex interventions, (2) community and structural intervent

Report from the University of Chicago Drug Abuse Research Center.

In summary, I have reviewed the results from 6 coded compounds we have evaluated as part of CPDD's efforts to expand into testing the dependence potential of anorectics and anxiolytics. I have reviewed a great deal of additional studies in order to place the results with the test drugs into a broader context and also to demonstrate our experience in evaluating these classes of drugs. Clearly the 4 anxiolytic drugs were well characterized by our tests. The two compounds designated as anorectics are still unknown to us. CPDD 5 appears amphetamine-like, is self-administered, and in both tests is

Toward Standards for Donor-Level Metadata Reporting in Human Tissue Research: Perspectives from Tissue Researchers.

INTRODUCTION: No widely adopted guidelines exist for collecting and reporting donor-level metadata in tissue-based research, limiting interpretability, reproducibility, and potentially introducing bias. This study aimed to inform ethical and appropriate metadata practices. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 16 investigators from the Human BioMolecular Atlas Program. Thematic analysis using inductively derived codes identified metadata elements and perspectives on their collection and reporting. RESULTS: Participants identified 80 metadata variables across six domains: de

Addressing a gap in community-engaged research: reporting results of congregations' implementation capacity assessment to research participants.

BACKGROUND: Community-engaged research depends on sharing findings effectively; however, few tools translate implementation capacity and readiness data into actionable feedback. This gap limits community organizations' ability to use results to guide health program implementation, build trust in research, and sustain ongoing participation. This study developed and used a tailored survey response report process for congregations participating in the Engaging Partners in Caring Communities (EPICC) project to support implementation planning and technical assistance. METHODS: The EPICC CFIR-infor

White hat bias: examples of its presence in obesity research and a call for renewed commitment to faithfulness in research reporting.

'White hat bias' (WHB) (bias leading to distortion of information in the service of what may be perceived to be righteous ends) is documented through quantitative data and anecdotal evidence from the research record regarding the postulated predisposing and protective effects of nutritively sweetened beverages and breastfeeding, respectively, on obesity. Evidence of an apparent WHB is found in a degree sufficient to mislead readers. WHB bias may be conjectured to be fuelled by feelings of righteous zeal, indignation toward certain aspects of industry or other factors. Readers should beware of

Recent advancements in gynecologic cancer research: a SPORE investigators meeting report.

Global incidence and mortality rates for endometrial and cervical cancers have been steadily rising, while these rates for ovarian cancer have decreased. Although these cancers represent unique diseases and challenges, overlapping biology and responses to targeted and immunotherapies create opportunities to advance research through shared knowledge and resources. In 2025, investigators funded by National Cancer Institute (NCI) Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPORE) and other NCI-supported grants convened a hybrid meeting to identify challenges and knowledge gaps in translational r

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders prevention and clinical guidelines research-workshop report.

It is estimated that up to 1 in 20 people in the United States are affected by fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD), an array of cognitive, emotional, physical and social disorders caused by exposure to alcohol during prenatal development. Common diagnoses encompassed within FASD include mood and behavioral disorders, memory and central nervous system deficits, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), slow growth and low body weight. While this condition affects a broad range of individuals and families, it is of particular concern in the military community, where cultural factors i

Advancing Lung Immunology Research: An Official American Thoracic Society Workshop Report.

The mammalian airways and lungs are exposed to a myriad of inhaled particulate matter, allergens, and pathogens. The immune system plays an essential role in protecting the host from respiratory pathogens, but a dysregulated immune response during respiratory infection can impair pathogen clearance and lead to immunopathology. Furthermore, inappropriate immunity to inhaled antigens can lead to pulmonary diseases. A complex network of epithelial, neural, stromal, and immune cells has evolved to sense and respond to inhaled antigens, including the decision to promote tolerance versus a rapid, ro
