Relationship between outer ear resonance and permanent noise-induced hearing loss.

INTRODUCTION: Prolonged exposure to noise produces permanent hearing loss in the frequency region centered around 4,000 Hz despite differences in the spectral and temporal characteristics of the noise. It is unclear to what extent properties of the auditory system contribute to the development of permanent hearing loss in this frequency region. This study was designed to evaluate the relationship between the frequency of peak outer ear resonance and the frequency of maximum hearing loss in a population of patients with a history of noise exposure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Analysis of the freque

Articulatory and acoustic differences between lyric and dramatic singing in Western classical music.

Within the realm of voice classification, singers could be sub-categorized by the weight of their repertoire, the so-called "singer's Fach." However, the opposite pole terms "lyric" and "dramatic" singing are not yet well defined by their acoustic and articulatory characteristics. Nine professional singers of different singers' Fach were asked to sing a diatonic scale on the vowel /a/, first in what the singers considered as lyric and second in what they considered as dramatic. Image recording was performed using real time magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with 25 frames/s, and the audio signal

Kinetic characterization of adolescent scoliosis patients with Lenke 1B.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate dynamic responses of Lenke1B+ spines of adolescent scoliosis patients to different frequencies. Methods: Modal analysis, harmonic response analysis and transient dynamics of a full spine model inverted by the finite element method using Abaqus. Results: The first-order axial resonance frequency of 4.51 Hz produced a maximum axial displacement of 30.15 mm. Comparison of the five frequencies indicated that the 10 Hz frequency response curve was smoothest, while the amplitude-frequency curve at 4 Hz showed the greatest fluctuations accompanied

Finite-Element Modelling of the Response of the Gerbil Middle Ear to Sound.

We present a finite-element model of the gerbil middle ear that, using a set of baseline parameters based primarily on a priori estimates from the literature, generates responses that are comparable with responses we measured in vivo using multi-point vibrometry and with those measured by other groups. We investigated the similarity of numerous features (umbo, pars-flaccida and pars-tensa displacement magnitudes, the resonance frequency and break-up frequency, etc.) in the experimental responses with corresponding ones in the model responses, as opposed to simply computing frequency-by-frequen

The application of resonance frequency measurements to study the stability of titanium implants during healing in the rabbit tibia.

The aim of this investigation was to measure the resonance frequency of a number of implants placed in the rabbit tibia at insertion and at predetermined periods thereafter and to correlate the results with histomorphometric measurements made when the animals were sacrificed. Ten mature New Zealand White rabbits were used in the study. Two c.p. threaded titanium implants were placed in the right tibia of each animal. Resonance frequency measurements were made by screwing a small transducer onto a standard abutment mounted on each fixture. Measurements were repeated with the transducer oriented

Acoustic analysis of trill sounds.

In this paper, the acoustic-phonetic characteristics of steady apical trills--trill sounds produced by the periodic vibration of the apex of the tongue--are studied. Signal processing methods, namely, zero-frequency filtering and zero-time liftering of speech signals, are used to analyze the excitation source and the resonance characteristics of the vocal tract system, respectively. Although it is natural to expect the effect of trilling on the resonances of the vocal tract system, it is interesting to note that trilling influences the glottal source of excitation as well. The excitation chara

Failure Analysis and Optimized Simulation Design of Silicon Micromechanical Resonant Accelerometers.

To develop solutions to the frequency instability and failure of silicon micromechanical resonant accelerometers, the state characteristics of micromechanical resonant accelerometers are investigated under temperature and vibration stresses. Through theoretical analysis and finite element simulation, the following is found: the Young's modulus of silicon varies with temperature, causing a resonance frequency shift of -1.364 Hz/°C; the residual stress of temperature change affects the resonance frequency shift of the microstructure, causing it to be 5.43 Hz/MPa (tensile stress) and -5.25 Hz/MPa

Modeling and Design of a Rear-Mounted Underwater Projector Using Equivalent Circuits.

Tonpilz is a popular transducer for underwater projector arrays for sonar systems. For low-frequency transmission, a larger axial dimension of the conventional Tonpilz transducer is required. However, a bulky and heavy Tonpilz element is not suitable due to limitations in terms of the space and payload of the array platform. To address this problem, we developed a rear-mounted Tonpilz transducer to generate a sub-fundamental resonance in addition to the common longitudinal resonance. For this purpose, we developed a new equivalent circuit model that can reflect all the effects of the key desig

Vibration, sonic and ultrasonic wave propagation analysis for the detection of osteoporosis.

The feasibility of vibration analysis and wave propagation analysis for the detection of osteoporosis is discussed. The relationship between the resonant frequencies, obtained by vibration analysis, and geometrical and material properties of long bones is found using a simple beam model. This relationship was verified experimentally on 142 excised bones. In vitro measurements for the detection of osteoporosis were performed on excised bones. Using a specific protocol for vibration and ultrasound measurements, a population of osteoporotic patients and age-matched controls were measured. From th

Theoretical modeling and modal analysis of multi-element coupled transducers.

Low-frequency transducers are considerably smaller than the wavelength. When multiple low-frequency transducers are closely packed, they couple with the surrounding water and form a transducer-water-transducer coupling structure called multi-element coupled transducers (MCT). This study presents a theoretical model of the MCT based on radiation and mutual radiation theory and analyzes it under multiple resonance frequencies and vibration modes. The MCT comprising N single-degree-of-freedom elements possesses N resonance frequencies and corresponding vibration modes, and the resonance frequency

Fatigue lifetime of reduced-diameter implants placed in different bone models.

OBJECTIVES: This study assessed the fatigue lifetime of reduced-diameter implants placed in either bovine rib or polymer-based bone model. METHODS: Bovine ribs were classified according to the criteria proposed by Lekholm and Zarb and were analyzed for bone fraction. Fourteen dental implants (3.25 mm in diameter × 15 mm in length) were placed in bovine ribs used as a bone model. They were subjected to resonance frequency analysis. Stainless steel loading hemisphere caps were bonded on the abutments position at 30-degree angle and with a moment arm of 11 mm. Accelerated life testing using the

Simulated Comparison of On-Chip Terahertz Filters for Sub-Wavelength Dielectric Sensing.

This paper discusses the application of on-chip terahertz (THz) filters attached to waveguides that can act as sensor elements, including for scanned imaging applications. Our work presents a comparative numerical study of several different geometries (comprising five split-ring resonator geometries and a quarter-wavelength stub resonator, the latter being well established as a sensor at THz frequencies and therefore able to act as a benchmark). We designed each structure to have a resonant frequency of 500 GHz, allowing the impact of resonator geometry on sensing performance to be isolated; t

Loosening detection of the femoral component of hip prostheses with extracorporeal shockwaves: a pilot study.

The diagnosis of aseptic loosening of hip implants is often challenging. A vibrational analysis of the bone-implant interface could be an alternative method to analyze the fixation of endoprostheses. We assessed an innovative and new approach for excitation by using extracorporeal shockwaves in this study. In three cadaver specimens total hip arthroplasty was performed bilaterally. Four different states of implant loosening were simulated. Three accelerometers were fixed at the medial condyle, the greater trochanter, and the crest of the ilium. The bone-implant compound was excited with highly

Variation of MEMS Thin Film Device Parameters under the Influence of Thermal Stresses.

With the advancement of semiconductor manufacturing technology, thin film structures were widely used in MEMS devices. These films played critical roles in providing support, reinforcement, and insulation in MEMS devices. However, due to their microscopic dimensions, the sensitivity of their parameters and performance to thermal stress increased significantly. In this study, a Pirani gauge sample with a multilayer thin film structure was designed and fabricated. Based on this sample, finite element modeling analysis and thermal stress experiments were conducted. The finite element modeling ana

Selective gas detection of titania nanoparticles via impedance spectroscopy and capacitive measurement.

The present paper demonstrated the impedance analysis of Au/TiO2nanoparticles/Si-Al capacitive sensor for selective detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at different frequency regimes. TiO2nanoparticles (NP) were synthesized through the solution process and characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy , x-ray diffraction analysis, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy. The gas sensitivity of Au/TiO2-NP/Si-Al was investigated, with the effect of temperature modulation (25 °C-250 °C) and dielectric variation in the vicinity of nanoparticles. Impeda

Differential response to vibration of three forms of scoliosis during axial cyclic loading: a finite element study.

BACKGROUND: Scoliosis is a serious disease that can affect all segments of society. Few studies have investigated the response to vibration of differing sinusoidal axial cyclic loading frequencies for different forms of scoliosis in the lumbar spine. METHODS: In this study, four finite element models, comprising a healthy spine, Lenke-A, Lenke-B and Lenke-C scoliosis of the lumbar S1-L1 region were developed. Modal analysis extracted resonant frequencies of the FE models with an upper body mass of 40 kg and 400 N preload. A transient dynamic analysis was performed to obtain the response to vi

Ex-vivo and replica measurements of nasal tract resonances.

BACKGROUND: The nose is a resonator, the acoustic properties of which are determined by its shape. Due to its complex anatomy and hence intricate acoustical response the identification of universal acoustic characteristics of nasalized vowels and consonants is challenging. The purpose of this investigation was to 1) elucidate acoustic properties of the nasal resonator, 2) document how the paranasal sinuses affect it, and 3) examine if 3D-replicas of anatomical specimens provide reliable data for acoustic analysis. METHODS: In this experimental study the resonance properties of the nasal tract
