Stability of respiratory sinus arrhythmia in children and young adolescents: a longitudinal examination.

The stability of children's baseline respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) and RSA regulation were examined longitudinally, with a 2-year lag between each of two waves of data collection. Associations between baseline RSA and RSA regulation also were examined in this study. During two laboratory sessions, 2 years apart, children were exposed to two stressors: exposure to an audiotaped conflict between two adults and a problem-solving task in which the child had to trace a star while looking into a mirror. Measures of baseline RSA and RSA regulation during the two stressors were obtained. Baseline

Inter-relations among declines in arterial distensibility, baroreflex function and respiratory sinus arrhythmia.

OBJECTIVES: We hypothesized that structural and neural cardiovascular (CV) deficits may be intimately linked. Specifically, decreased carotid distensibility with age may blunt the arterial baroreflex, thereby reducing resting cardiac vagal tone. BACKGROUND: Increased CV risk is associated with lower carotid distensibility, impaired baroreflex function and reduced respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), possibly representing a direct path between structural and neural CV deficits. METHODS: We estimated the mechanostructural and neural components of baroreflex function and examined their relation

Respiratory sinus arrhythmia in children with severe cyanotic and pallid breath-holding spells.

In this study we investigated centrally mediated parasympathetic regulation of modulated cardiac vagal tone among children with severe cyanotic and pallid breath-holding spells by examining respiratory sinus arrhythmia. Respiratory sinus arrhythmia was evaluated in 41 children; 17 subjects with cyanotic breath-holding spells (6 boys, 11 girls; mean age 37.1 months), 7 subjects with pallid breath-holding spells (2 boys, 5 girls; mean age 33.0 months), and 17 controls (8 boys, 9 girls; mean age 41.2 months). Subjects had recurrent (more than 3) severe breath-holding spells. Each subject's electr

Heart rate variability in healthy term newborns: the contribution of respiratory sinus arrhythmia.

Cardiorespiratory interactions in healthy full term newborns were investigated. Spectral analysis was used on heart rate and breathing data from 22 neonates 2-5 days old to reveal coincident frequencies in the breathing and heart rate variability (HRV) spectra, thus identifying respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA). The spectral description of HRV in healthy term newborns revealed a consistent and distinct RSA feature, with a mean contribution of over 30%. The contribution of RSA to HRV was dependent on breathing frequency and absolute RSA power. The mechanisms that produce this cardiorespiratory

A systematic literature review of respiratory sinus arrhythmia response to psychotherapy in pediatric samples.

The present review synthesizes research examining changes in parasympathetic biomarkers of self-regulation (i.e., respiratory sinus arrhythmia [RSA] activity) over the course of intervention or prevention programs in pediatric samples. Based on a preregistered protocol (PROSPERO: CRD42024550670), PubMed and PsycINFO databases were searched until July 1, 2025 to identify 13 peer-reviewed, empirical studies reporting indices of RSA activity in samples of infants, children, and adolescents participating in psychotherapy treatment programs. Study quality was evaluated using design-specific tools f

Association between romantic partners' rumination and couples' conflict is moderated by respiratory sinus arrhythmia.

Close relationships are an important social context in which emotional experiences, regulation, and coregulation unfold. This interpersonal emotion regulation process is likely intertwined with the self-regulatory capacities and social skills of each individual dyad member. This study aimed to examine whether respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), a physiological marker related to self-regulation, moderates the impact of rumination, a maladaptive emotion regulation strategy, on couples' conflict. A dyadic, longitudinal design examined the association among RSA, rumination, and couples' conflict i

Rumination and Cognitive Distraction in Major Depressive Disorder: An Examination of Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia.

Difficulty regulating emotions following stressful events is a hallmark of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Although individuals' ability to regulate their emotions is believed to have direct consequences for both emotional and physical wellbeing, few studies have examined the cardiovascular effects of different emotion regulation strategies in MDD. To the best of our knowledge, the current study is the first to examine the effects of two emotion regulation strategies, cognitive distraction and rumination, on both self-reported sadness and respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) in individuals with

Vagus nerve stimulation induces changes in respiratory sinus arrhythmia of epileptic children during sleep.

PURPOSE: This study analyzed the direct short-term effect of vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) on respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) in children with pharmacoresistant epilepsy. METHODS: RSA magnitude is calculated as the ratio between maximum and minimum heart rate for each respiratory cycle-before, during, and after the actual VNS period. In 10 children, changes in RSA magnitude were evaluated on polysomnographic recordings, including electrocardiography (ECG), electroencephalography (EEG), thoracoabdominal distension, nasal airflow, and VNS artifacts. Measurements during stimulation were compa

Clinical assessment of respiratory sinus arrhythmia by computerized analysis of RR interval and respiration.

Heart rate variability (HRV) and respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) are often considered as interchangeable terms. However, the application of power spectral analysis to describe spontaneous fluctuations in heart period has clearly shown that RSA is only a part of HRV, and that in specific situations their respective patterns may diverge. In order to quantify the RSA we have used a mathematical method based on combined spectral analysis of respiration and RR interval (cross-correlation function), and evaluated its performance in terms of reproducibility, sensitivity to parasympathetic withdraw

Spectral analysis of fetal heart rate in sheep: the occurrence of respiratory sinus arrhythmia.

Respiratory sinus arrhythmia is a pattern of rhythmic variation in the heart rate that occurs at the frequency of respiration and is mediated principally by the vagus nerve. Spectral analysis can decompose the variance of a series of sequential measures into constituent frequencies to measure and verify whether there is respiratory sinus arrhythmia in utero in the fetal lamb. Recordings of heart period were obtained from electrodes implanted under fetal skin in six chronic preparations. Respiratory rate and heart period were recorded immediately after delivery and daily for the next 5 days. Re

Neuroticism and respiratory sinus arrhythmia predict increased internalizing symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has impacted young adults across a number of different domains. It is critical to establish the degree to which the COVID-19 pandemic has affected mental health and identify predictors of poor outcomes. Neuroticism and (low) respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) are risk factors of internalizing disorders that might predict increased psychopathology symptoms. The present study included 222 undergraduate students from [name removed] in Long Island, NY. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, participants completed self-report measures of neuroticism and internalizing symp

Respiratory sinus arrhythmia reactivity in anxiety and posttraumatic stress disorder: A review of literature.

Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) reactivity is thought to indicate how adaptively one responds to stress. RSA reactivity has been examined across anxiety disorders and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), to better understand the psychophysiological stress response of these disorders. The current state of the literature is mixed, and the association between RSA reactivity and PTSD/anxiety is unclear. This review examines RSA reactivity in response to laboratory stressor tasks across samples with anxiety and PTSD. Results indicated a complex literature that may suggest an association between

Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia as an Index of Cardiac Vagal Control in Mitral Valve Prolapse.

Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), i.e. heart rate (HR) variations during inspiration and expiration, is considered as a noninvasive index of cardiac vagal control. Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) could be associated with increased cardiovascular risk; however, the studies are rare particularly at adolescent age. Therefore, we aimed to study cardiac vagal control indexed by RSA in adolescent patients suffering from MVP using short-term heart rate variability (HRV) analysis. We examined 12 adolescents (girls) with MVP (age 15.9±0.5 years) and 12 age and gender matched controls. Resting ECG was con

Associations between resting respiratory sinus arrhythmia, intraindividual reaction time variability, and trait positive affect.

Resting respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) reflects vagal tone, which has been found to be related to trait positive affect (PA). Resting RSA has also been found to be related to intraindividual reaction time (RT) variability (IIV), which is an index of executive brain function. However, research has yet to investigate whether IIV is associated with trait PA, and whether IIV interacts with resting RSA to predict trait PA. To examine this issue, data of trait PA, 5-min resting RSA, and trial-to-trial IIV of a flanker task (target detection) were collected in 117 young healthy adults. Results sh

Toward understanding respiratory sinus arrhythmia: relations to cardiac vagal tone, evolution and biobehavioral functions.

Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA, or high-frequency heart-rate variability) is frequently employed as an index of cardiac vagal tone or even believed to be a direct measure of vagal tone. However, there are many significant caveats regarding vagal tone interpretation: 1. Respiratory parameters can confound relations between RSA and cardiac vagal tone.2. Although intraindividual relations between RSA and cardiac vagal control are often strong, interindividual associations may be modest.3. RSA measurement is profoundly influenced by concurrent levels of momentary physical activity, which can bi

[Respiratory sinus arrhythmia as predictor of blood pressure stability during anaesthetic induction in diabetics].

OBJECTIVE: Diabetics with cardiovascular autonomous neuropathy (CAN) can show severe hypotension during the course of anaesthesia. To improve the safety of anaesthesia, pre-operative evaluation of this concomitant disorder is recommended. The conventional test battery described by Ewing and Clarke to diagnose CAN is relatively time-consuming and complex. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether patients at risk could be reliably identified with less diagnostic effort. METHODS: Fifty patients with diabetes mellitus undergoing an ophthalmosurgical procedure were investigated. To evaluate t

Respiratory sinus arrhythmia among menopausal women after exposition to extremely-low-frequency magnetic fields.

In this paper I endeavored to show that respiratory sinus arrhythmia closely corresponds with the perception of psychosomatic complaints. To achieve this aim, two groups of menopausal women, each consisting of 85 subjects, were compared, one of which exhibiting troubles with falling asleep, frequent awakening at night, and sweating and fatigability sensations during the day and the other being asymptomatic. Comparative non-invasive biometric analysis included the following: total, inspiratory, and expiratory heart rate, breathing rate, and respiratory sinus arrhythmia. Overall, I found that th

Depressed respiratory sinus arrhythmia: additional evidence for impairment of vagal activity in human hyperthyroidism.

The efferent activity of the parasympathetic component of the autonomic nervous system was evaluated by measuring the magnitude of the respiratory sinus arrhythmia in 3 female patients with hyperthyroidism (Basedow-Graves' disease) before and after treatment. The heart rate variations induced by the test increased in all patients after treatment of thyrotoxicosis (from 15 +/- 2.9 to 28.3 +/- 6.6 beats/min; mean +/- SEM) with propylthiouracil (600 mg/day). This result confirms our previous observations indicating an important and reversible impairment of the efferent vagal activity in human hyp

Respiratory sinus arrhythmia is reduced after pulmonary vein isolation in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

INTRODUCTION: Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) describes heart rate (HR) changes in synchrony with respiration. It is relevant for exercise capacity and mechanistically linked with the cardiac autonomic nervous system. After pulmonary vein isolation (PVI), the current therapy of choice for patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF), the cardiac vagal tone is often diminished. We hypothesized that RSA is modulated by PVI in patients with paroxysmal AF. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Respiratory sinus arrhythmia, measured by using a deep breathing test and heart rate variability parameters, was

Better quantification of neonatal respiratory sinus arrhythmia--progress by modelling and model-related physiological examinations.

A large interindividual variability of parameters quantifying respiratory sinus arrhythmia were found in a well defined group of healthy neonates during constant conditions of examination. Reasons for this can be found by means of a mathematical model which is based on physiological data. The results indicate sharp inconsistencies in the transfer function between respiratory movements and resulting respiratory sinus arrhythmia and are dependent on a relative frequency unit fN (ratio of mean respiration rate to mean heart rate). The values of the coherence (as a function of this relative freque
