Gastrointestinal fistula is the most serious complication of esophageal and gastric cardiac cancer surgery. According to occurrence of organ, gastrointestinal fistula can be divided into anastomotic fistula, gastric fistula; According to occurrence site, fistula can be divided into cervical fistula, thoracic fistula; According to time of occurrence, can be divided into early, middle and late fistula. There are special types of fistula including ‘thoracic cavity’-stomach-bronchial fistula, ‘thoracic cavity’-stomach-aortic fistula. Early diagnosis needs familiarity with various types of clinical

INTRODUCTION: Multiple complications can occur in tuberculosis. Bronchopleurocutaneous fistula is a pathological communication between bronchus, pleural space and skin.
CLINICAL CASE: We present a 47 year-old male patient, schizophrenic, who presented with complaints of pleuritic chest pain, cough and weight loss. The patient was cachectic with purulent drainage from an orifice in the antero-lateral left chest wall. In this drainage acid-fast bacilli were identified and chest radiograph showed bilateral infiltrates. He was admitted to the Infectious Diseases Department with the diagnosis of f

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Esophageal atresia with tracheoesophageal fistula (EA/TEF) is a relatively common congenital anomaly, but its pathogenesis remains poorly understood. Previous studies using the experimental Adriamycin-induced rat model of EA/TEF suggest that the fistula tract, or "distal esophagus," is derived from respiratory epithelium and expresses the respiratory-specific transcription factor TTF-1. To better correlate the experimental rat model of EA/TEF with the human anomaly, we looked for evidence of a respiratory-derived origin in the neonatal TEF.
METHODS: After IRB approval, 2 h

A case of bone tuberculosis in 83 years old farmer was described. He was hospitalized because of pain, oedema and purulent fistula in carpal regio. He hadn't neither systemic symptoms neither from respiratory tract. Chest X-ray and X-ray of carpal bones revealed tuberculous lesions. In the pus from cutaneous fistula AFB were found in culture. Antituberculous treatment was successful.

A pancreatic fistula is defined as the leakage of pancreatic fluid into another organ or compartment because of pancreatic duct disruption or pseudocyst formation. It is most often seen in middle-aged men between 40 and 50, particularly in patients who have a history of chronic alcoholism and pancreatitis. The tract may fistulae into the pleura, creating a pancreaticopleural fistula, an exceedingly rare condition presenting as a recurrent pleural effusion and extremely high amylase levels, a key distinguishing factor in diagnosis. Here, we present such a case of a recurrent pancreaticopleural

We report an experience of successful treatment for a case of intractable chronic empyema complicated by bronchopleural fistula (BPF). A 75-year-old woman who had severe diabetes mellitus complained of general fatigue and anorexia. A lung abscess in the right upper lobe was diagnosed and treated with antibiotics. Regrettably, it ruptured into a pyopneumothorax. The BPF was closed primarily and covered with intercostal muscle, but the procedure was not effective. The pyopneumothorax led to the development of chronic empyema with BPF. The patient was admitted to our hospital for treatment and th

Prolonged air leak or alveolar-pleural fistula is common after lung resection and can usually be managed with continued pleural drainage until resolution. Further management options include blood patch administration, chemical pleurodesis, and 1-way endobronchial valve placement. Bronchopleural fistula is rare but is associated with high mortality, often caused by development of concomitant empyema. Bronchopleural fistula should be confirmed with bronchoscopy, which may allow bronchoscopic intervention; however, transthoracic stump revision or window thoracostomy may be required.

BACKGROUND: The development of an oronasal fistula after primary cleft palate repair has a wide variation reported in the literature. The aim of this review is to identify the reported oronasal fistula incidence to provide a benchmark for surgical practice.
METHODS: A systematic review was undertaken to investigate the incidence of fistula. Multiple meta-analyses were performed to pool proportions of reported fistulae, in each data set corresponding to the continent of origin of the study, type of cleft, and techniques of cleft palate repair used.
RESULTS: A total of 9294 patients were inclu

Hydatic cyst of the liver remains a serious public health problem in Morocco and several other Mediterranean countries. This benign affection can cause serious sometimes fatal complications such as cyst rupture into the biliary ducts or the thorax. We present the case of a patient with serofibrous pleurisy and recall the often late diagnosis of hydatic cyst. Biliary pleural fistulization is a rare but serious complication.

Respiratory tract fistulas, including tracheal and bronchial fistulas, usually cause prolonged hospitalization with developed complications and even death, while respiratory tract fistula healing remains challenging. Exploring effectiveness and mechanism in animal systems using well-designed bio-nanomaterials will improve our understanding of fistula management. Hyaluronate (hyaluronan or hyaluronic acid) has been widely studied as a promising coating material for bio-nanomaterials in treatment applications. Herein, by combining the intrinsic bioactivities of sodium hyaluronate (SHA) and the e

Although fistulae and hypercalcemia are rare at the time of diagnosis of esophageal carcinoma, they are not uncommon terminal events. Most fistulae communicate with the respiratory tract. Uncommon sites of fistulae due to esophageal carcinoma include extension to the aorta, pleura, pericardium, and mediastinum. We report a patient with a spontaneous pneumomediastinum discovered during radiologic staging of esophageal carcinoma. The symptoms were dysphagia, weight loss, and pneumonia. The patient had hypercalcemia refractory to conventional measures, another adverse prognostic factor. Cisplatin

A postoperative aerodigestive fistula is one of the rare but critical complications after esophagectomy, and management is challenging. The essential keys to successful treatment of these fistula are thorough debridement and complete closure followed by separation of the respiratory and digestive tract. We present a case of a recurrent bronchoesophageal fistula between the left main bronchus and neo esophagus, which was successfully treated through a contralateral approach. The fistula was debrided and closed primarily through a right thoracotomy, and the interposition of a pedicled latissimus

Fistulas represent abnormal communications between two epithelialized surfaces, which can involve organs, vessels, or the skin. While common fistulas are frequently encountered, uncommon fistulas in the thoracic and abdominal cavities pose significant diagnostic challenges due to their varied etiologies and presentations. Imaging plays a pivotal role in the detection, characterization, and management planning of these complex entities. This pictorial review will explore the spectrum of uncommon thoracic and abdominal fistulas, emphasizing the crucial contributions of various imaging modalities

Esophageal atresia with or without tracheoesophageal fistula (EA ± TEF) occurs in 1 out of every 3000 births. Current survival approaches 95%, and research is therefore focused on morbidity and health-related quality of life issues. Up to 50% of neonates with EA ± TEF have one or more additional malformations including those of the respiratory tract that occur in a relatively high proportion of them and particularly of those with vertebral, anal, cardiac, tracheoesophageal, renal, and limb association. Additionally, a significant proportion of survivors suffer abnormal pulmonary function and c

Yellow nail syndrome (YNS) is triad of yellow nails, lymphedema, and respiratory tract involvement. The exact pathogenesis of nail changes in YNS is unknown. We present a case of yellow nails and localized lymphedema secondary to artificial AV fistula in a 55-year-old chronic renal failure patient on hemodialysis for 5 years. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of yellow nail syndrome reported in association with artificial AV fistula.

Complete tracheal agenesis is a very rare congenital anomaly that is only compatible with life in some cases with associated tracheo-oesophageal or broncho-oesophageal fistula. In most cases, concomitant congenital anomalies of the heart, digestive tract or genitourinary tract are present. It should be suspected in any neonate with a history of hydramnios, absent crying, respiratory distress and difficulty in intubation. The possibility for surgical correction or palliation rests on the extent of atresia present. We present a case of complete tracheal agenesis without tracheo nor broncho-oesop
