34 patients suffering from a metastatic cervical neoplasm with unknown origin of the primary tumour were examined between 1977 and 1981. The site of the primary tumour was detected in 61% (= 21 cases) of the patients. In the literature (4158 cases, 61 authors) a 32% success rate only was stated. Diagnostic improvement was achieved via "panendoscopy". This method allows a complete systematic evaluation of the upper respiratory and gastrointestinal tract.

A case of glomangioma of the nasal cavity and the literature concerning this rare tumor are reported. Differential diagnosis, symptoms, pathogenesis and therapy are discussed. This uncommon benign neoplasm is seldom located in the upper respiratory tract. It originates from proliferating arteriovenous capillary anastomoses. Intranasal glomus tumors produce nasal obstruction, epistaxis and sharp pain. The treatment of choice is complete excision of the tumor. The prognosis is excellent when the glomangioma is completely removed.

BACKGROUND: Extramedullary plasmacytoma is an uncommon tumor that most often involves the nasopharynx or upper respiratory tract. Extramedullary plasmacytoma is a type of plasma cell neoplasm that can present as a primary tumor or secondary to another plasma cell neoplasm, such as multiple myeloma. Secondary extramedullary plasmacytoma is usually noted in the advanced stages of the disease. Involvement of the gastrointestinal tract occurs in approximately 10% of cases.

Intratracheal tumor is a rare tumor, accounting for only 2% of upper respiratory tract neoplasms. Its symptoms are similar to those of head and neck cancers, including coughing up blood, sore throat, and airway obstruction. The diagnosis of this disease is often based on the findings of fibrobronchoscopy or computed tomography (CT). Surgery remains the treatment of choice for tracheal tumor. In Part I of this article, we present our data collected over the past 8 years on the clinical evaluations of pediatric brain tumors with an emphasis placed on the more common neoplasms. Case studies of two families with lung and other respiratory tract cancers were investigated. Consenting family members underwent comprehensive evaluation, including physical examination, routine laboratory studies, pulmonary function testing, sputum cytology analysis, and lymphocyte karyotyping. In both families, the environmental influence of smoking and, to a lesser extent, occupational exposures were evident risks. Both families had members with multiple primary malignant neoplasms and probably radiogenic cancers, suggestive of inherent predisposition to environmentally induced neoplasia.

Extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) is a rare neoplasm of soft tissue that usually arises in the respiratory tract, nasal cavity, sinuses, and nasopharynx. It is even more uncommon for it to arise either in the testis or heart. We report the presentation of a case where plasmacytomas were found sequentially in the testis, subcutaneous tissue, and heart. EMP usually has a good prognosis except when it involves the heart. Our patient survived for only 15 months post autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms that can be benign or malignant. SFTs have been most often documented in the pleura. Solitary plasmacytoma of the paranasal sinuses are uncommon neoplasms of B lymphocyte origin. They comprise one per cent of all head and neck tumours of the upper respiratory tract.
