Contamination characteristics and airflow regulated transport of microbial aerosols in a hospital respiratory ward.

Airborne transmission of microbial aerosols in hospital environments has been increasingly recognized as an important factor in healthcare-associated infections. However, their distribution and transmission mechanisms in hospital wards remain unclear. To address this gap, this study investigated a respiratory ward in a hospital in Beijing. An integrated approach combining air impactor sampling, high-throughput sequencing, and computational fluid dynamics modeling was employed to systematically examine microbial concentrations, particle size distributions, community composition, and dispersion

NEK7 couples SDHB to orchestrate respiratory chain electron transport homeostasis that impedes liver fibrosis.

The mode of electron transport in mitochondrial respiratory chain determines whether it generates energy or more reactive oxygen species (ROS), a key for cellular adaptation to diverse oxygen environments. However, the understanding of the mechanisms remains incomplete. Here, we find that NIMA-related kinase 7 (NEK7), targeted to mitochondria by its signal peptides, binds to succinate dehydrogenase complex iron sulfur subunit B (SDHB), stabilizing the spatial conformation of complex II and promoting forward electron transport. Deficiency of NEK7 in hepatocytes induces reverse electron transpor

Modeling of Transport Mechanisms in the Respiratory System: Validation via Congestive Heart Failure Patients.

The heart and lungs are intricately related. For congestive heart failure patients, fluid (plasma) backs up into the pulmonary system. As a result, pulmonary capillary pressure increases, causing fluid to seep into the lungs (pulmonary edema) within minutes. This excess fluid induces extra stress during breathing that affects respiratory health. In this paper, we focus on the effect that high pulmonary capillary pressure has on the development of this extravascular lung water (EVLW). A mathematical model of pulmonary fluid and mass transport mechanisms is developed in order to quantitatively a

Comparison of thoracic ultrasonography (TUS), clinical respiratory scoring (CRS), and blood analysis to evaluate respiratory dysfunction in transported calves.

Mixing of calves during and after transport exposes them to large numbers of pathogens, increasing their risk of developing bovine respiratory disease after arrival. Identifying individual calves with respiratory disease is important to assess transport fitness and to facilitate timely treatment. This study compared three screening tests (thoracic ultrasound scores [TUS], clinical respiratory scores [CRS], and blood variables indicative of immune and inflammation status) for detecting respiratory disease in calves before and after transport to assess the degree of agreement in identifying resp

[Pharmacological effects of brovanexine hydrochloride (BR-222) on the respiratory tract system, particularly on the respiratory tract fluid, mucociliary transport and cough].

Pharmacological effects of brovanexine hydrochloride (BR-222), a new expectorant, on the respiratory tract system was studied in comparison with that of bromhexine hydrochloride. 1. When doses ranging from 5 to 40 mg/kg of BR-222 were given orally (p.o.) or intraduodenally (i.d.) to rats, rabbits and dogs, it caused a significant increase in the output volume of respiratory tract fluid (RTF). It was almost as potent as bromhexine, but its pattern of increasing RTF was different from that of bromhexine. The increase in the serous ingredient of RTF after BR-222 administration seemed to be more r

Breaking barriers: Respiratory viral strategies targeting the host's nuclear pore complex and nuclear transport pathways.

From stealthy infiltrators to blunt-force saboteurs, many human viruses--perhaps all-disrupt nuclear transport to control host gene expression, suppress immune responses, and redirect cellular resources toward their own replication. Among them, respiratory viruses stand out for their global impact and relentless evolution, from seasonal scourges to pandemic threats. Focusing on adenoviruses, influenza, rhinoviruses, RSV, and SARS-CoV-2, we explore a series of molecular case studies that reveal both shared strategies and the diverse molecular innovations these respiratory pathogens use to subve

The effect of anion transport inhibitors and extracellular Cl- concentration on eosinophil respiratory burst activity.

Furosemide has been shown recently to protect asthmatic patients against certain bronchoconstrictor challenges. We investigated the effect of furosemide on eosinophil function. Since furosemide may be exerting its inhibitory effect on the eosinophil by inhibiting anion transport, we also assessed the effects of the anion transport inhibitors 5-nitro-2-(3-phenylpropylamino)-benzoic acid (NPPB) and 4,4'-diisothiocyanatostilbene-2,2'-disulfonic acid (DIDS). Furosemide, NPPB and DIDS inhibited the eosinophil respiratory burst in response to leukotriene B4 (LTB4) and, to a smaller extent, inhibited

Safety of inter-facility transport strategies for patients referred for severe acute respiratory distress syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Inter-facility transport of patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in the prone position (PP) is a high-risk situation, compared to other strategies. We aimed to quantify the prevalence of complications during transport in PP, compared to transports with veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO) or in the supine position (SP). METHODS: We performed a retrospective, single center cohort study in Lyon university hospital, France. We included patients ≥ 16 years with ARDS (Berlin definition) transported to an ARDS referral center between 01/12/2016 a

Mucus rheology and transport in neonatal respiratory distress syndrome and the effect of surfactant therapy.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) is caused by a deficiency of pulmonary surfactant. Alveolar collapse and obstruction of conducting airways leads to mismatch of ventilation and perfusion and profound hypoxemia. We postulated that surfactant deficiency could alter the properties of respiratory mucus in such a way that it would be poorly cleared from airways and promote airway luminal obstruction and that these changes might be reversed by the exogenous administration of a synthetic surfactant preparation. METHODS: Respiratory mucus coating an endotracheal tube (ETT) or

Hemodynamic and oxygen transport effects of prostaglandin E1 in patients with adult respiratory distress syndrome.

The hemodynamic and oxygen transport effects of prostaglandin E1 (PGE1, Prostin -VR), in increasing doses from 1 to 30 ng/kg X min were evaluated in 5 severely ill surgical patients with adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). This agent produced marked reductions in pulmonary arterial and venous pressures, and increases in cardiac output and oxygen transport. Improvement in PaO2 occurred several hours after these effects. The data indicate that this agent may be a useful adjunctive therapy for ARDS.

A new family of TonB-dependent copper transporters linked to respiratory oxidase function.

Copper is an essential metal notably found in respiration complexes for its redox properties. It is also toxic hence its cellular trafficking is tightly controlled. Bacteria have developed a number of defense systems against copper excess, but its acquisition pathways remain poorly characterized. Ubiquitous in Gram-negative bacteria, TonB-dependent transporters (TBDTs) are outer membrane β-barrel proteins that mediate the proton motive force-dependent import of various nutrients to the periplasm. Here, we characterized a TBDT that imports copper in the whooping cough agent Bordetella pertussis

Role of the zinc uptake ABC transporter of Moraxella catarrhalis in persistence in the respiratory tract.

Moraxella catarrhalis is a human respiratory tract pathogen that causes otitis media in children and lower respiratory tract infections in adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. We have identified and characterized a zinc uptake ABC transporter that is present in all strains of M. catarrhalis tested. A mutant in which the znu gene cluster is knocked out shows markedly impaired growth compared to the wild type in medium that contains trace zinc; growth is restored to wild-type levels by supplementing medium with zinc but not with other divalent cations. Thermal-shift assays showed t
