[Characteristics of the structural reorganization of the neurons of the reticular formation of human brain stem in schizophrenia].

Golgi technique was applied to the study of autopsied brain stems of mentally sane subjects and patients with paranoid schizophrenia. The geometry of neurons in magnocellular reticular nucleus was morphometrically assessed. Spiral-like primary dendrites were found and the orientation of secondary dendrites changed. In schizophrenic patients the cross-sectional area of neuronal soma, maximal radius of dendritic field, total dendrites length, the dendritic area span were decreased, and the dendrites' waviness increased.

The brainstem reticular formation pivots abnormal neural transmission in the course of Anorexia Nervosa.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) represents an eating disorder, which features the highest rate of mortality among all psychiatric disorders. The disease prevalence is increasing steadily, and an effective cure is missing. The neurobiology of the disease is largely unknown, and only a few studies were designed to disclose specific brain areas, where altered neural transmission may occur. In AN behavioral alterations surpassing altered feeding are present, which often involve archaic behaviors finalized to the survival of the species. In fact, alterations of sleep and reward-driven behavior accompany the

Morphology of Dbx1 respiratory neurons in the preBötzinger complex and reticular formation of neonatal mice.

The relationship between neuron morphology and function is a perennial issue in neuroscience. Information about synaptic integration, network connectivity, and the specific roles of neuronal subpopulations can be obtained through morphological analysis of key neurons within a microcircuit. Here we present morphologies of two classes of brainstem respiratory neurons. First, interneurons derived from Dbx1-expressing precursors (Dbx1 neurons) in the preBötzinger complex (preBötC) of the ventral medulla that generate the rhythm for inspiratory breathing movements. Second, Dbx1 neurons of the inter

Effects of chronic dorsal column lesions on pelvic viscerosomatic convergent medullary reticular formation neurons.

Single medullary reticular formation (MRF) neurons receive multiple somatovisceral convergent inputs originating from many different spinal and cranial nerves, including the pelvic nerve (PN), dorsal nerve of the penis (DNP), and the abdominal branches of the vagus. In a previous study, the input to MRF from the male genitalia was shown to be eliminated with chronic 30-day dorsal hemisection at the T8 spinal level. In this study, the effect of a smaller chronic lesion [dorsal column lesion (DCx)] on MRF neuronal responses was examined. Responses to bilateral electrical stimulation of the DNP r

Structural anomaly in the reticular formation in narcolepsy type 1, suggesting lower levels of neuromelanin.

The aim of this study was to investigate structural changes in the brain stem of adolescents with narcolepsy, a disorder characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness, fragmented night-time sleep, and cataplexy. For this purpose, we used quantitative magnetic resonance imaging to obtain R1 and R2 relaxation rates, proton density, and myelin maps in adolescents with narcolepsy (n = 14) and healthy controls (n = 14). We also acquired resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) for brainstem connectivity analysis. We found a significantly lower R2 in the rostral reticular formation

Calbindin-immunoreactive neurons in the reticular formation of the rat brainstem: catecholamine content and spinal projections.

Calbindin-D28k (calbindin) is a calcium-binding protein that is distributed widely in the rat brain. The localisation of calbindin immunoreactivity in the medulla oblongata and its colocalisation with adrenaline-synthesising neurons [phenylethanolamine-N-methyltransferase-immunoreactive (PNMT-IR)] was examined (Granata and Chang [1994] Brain Res. 645:265-277). However, detailed information about the distribution of calbindin-IR neurons in the reticular formation of the medulla oblongata in particular is lacking. In this report, the authors address this issue with an emphasis on the quantitatio

Injection of a GABA antagonist into the mesopontine reticular formation abolishes haloperidol-induced catalepsy in rats.

THE pedunculopontine nucleus and its adjacent structure of the mesopontine reticular formation are known as a mesencephalic locomotor region, since either electrical or chemical stimulation of these regions induces locomotion in decerebrate animals. In parkinsonism, it is presumed that the pedunculopontine nucleus is under GABAergic overinhibition from the basal ganglia. To reveal the behavioural effects of GABAergic disinhibition of the mesopontine reticular formation in parkinsonism, picrotoxin, a GABAA antagonist, (5 or 10 ng/ 0.25 microliter) or vehicle was injected unilaterally into the m

Role of the brain-stem reticular formation in tonic-clonic seizures: lesion and pharmacological studies.

Bilateral lesions of the pontine tegmentum involving the superior cerebellar peduncles and the nucleus reticularis pontis oralis have been shown to attenuate the tonic components of maximal seizures induced by electroshock, sound stimulation (audiogenic), or pentylenetetrazol, although having no effect on clonus in three separate seizure models. The pontine tegmental lesion also abolishes the clonus of minimal audiogenic seizures that have a motor pattern different from that of other clonic models, and are believed to originate in the brain stem. The preponderant suppression of tonus by the po

Association of medullary reticular formation ventral part with spasticity in mice suffering from photothrombotic stroke.

Strokes cause spasticity via stretch reflex hyperexcitability in the spinal cord, and spastic paralysis due to involuntary muscle contraction in the hands and fingers can severely restrict skilled hand movements. However, the underlying neurological mechanisms remain unknown. Using a mouse model of spasticity after stroke, we demonstrate changes in neuronal activity with and without electrostimulation of the afferent nerve to induce the stretch reflex, measured using quantitative activation-induced manganese-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging. Neuronal activity increased within the ventral me

Cholinergic regulation of cataplexy in canine narcolepsy in the pontine reticular formation is mediated by M2 muscarinic receptors.

Both rapid eye movement sleep and cataplexy in the narcoleptic canine have been shown to increase after both systemic and local administration of cholinergic agonists in the pontine reticular formation. Furthermore, binding studies indicate an increase in the number of M2 muscarinic receptors in the pontine reticular formation of narcoleptic canines. In the present study we have investigated the receptor subtypes involved in mediating the cholinergic stimulation of cataplexy, as defined by brief periods of hypotonia induced by emotions, within the pontine reticular formation of narcoleptic can

[A case of infarction in the pontine tegmentum involving the bilateral MLF and unilateral paramedian pontine reticular formation].

A 61-year-old man with lesions of the bilateral medial longitudinal fasciculus (MLF) and left paramedian pontine reticular formation (PPRF) caused by an infarction in the pontine tegmentum was reported. On admission, the ocular position of the left eye on forward gaze was fixed at the midline, while the right eye was abducted, and skew deviation was observed. On leftward gaze, neither eye could pass the midline, and on rightward gaze the right eye was abducted with monocular nystagmus, indicating paralytic pontine exotropia. On the fifth day, the bilateral eyes were abducted on forward gaze. O

[Lesion of the bilateral MLF and unilateral paramedian pontine reticular formation, caused by an infarction in the midbrain tegmentum].

A 71-year-old man with bilateral medial longitudinal fasciculus (MLF) syndrome and paralytic pontine exotropia caused by an infarction of the midbrain tegmentum was reported. He suddenly noticed a diplopia and gait disturbance, and visited our clinic. Neurological examination revealed that this right eye was slightly abducted in the primary position. On horizontal gaze, outwardbeating nystagmus of the abducted eyes was observed, bilaterally. The adduction of the bilateral eyes was severely disturbed and the abduction of the left eye was slightly restricted, while the convergence was normal. T2

The role of the sympathetic system in producing cardiac disturbances determined by stimulation of the midbrain reticular formation in the cat.

The authors check the theory according to which cardiac rhythm disturbances developing after myocardial infarction or in the course of a long Q-T interval syndrome are due to stimulation of the autonomic nervous system which innervates the heart via the stellate ganglia, the tonus of the left sympathetic being predominant over the right sympathetic at cardiac level. Six semiacute experiments were carried out on curarized cats in which arrhythmia was produced by stereotaxic electric stimulation of the midbrain reticular formation (MRF). Stimulation of MRF after either left or right stellectomy
