Retinal involvement during leukemia is frequent (varying from 28% to 50%), can be the result of different mechanisms, and may reveal the disease. We describe two patients, 10 and 50 years old, who consulted for a sudden drop in visual acuity. Fundus examination showed bilateral retinal hemorrhage with a white center in both eyes associated with other hemorrhages in the posterior pole. Acute leukemia was found in both patients and chemotherapy was institgated. The younger patient died of general complications, the other is in remission phase. Retinal hemorrhage with a white center is a rare man

A young adult demonstrated a spontaneous vitreous hemorrhage in an eye which harbored two retinal arterial loops, with bleeding originating in the area of the larger loop. These congenital vascular anomalies characteristically originate on the optic disk and terminate by anastomosing with or forming a retinal vessel. Although uncommon, congenital retinal arterial loops can no longer be thought innocuous and must be considered when decreased visual acuity occurs.

PURPOSE: To present a case series of patients who underwent pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) for dense vitreous hemorrhage (VH) secondary to avulsed retinal vessels in the setting of acute posterior vitreous detachment (PVD).
METHODS: The clinical presentation, surgical management, and outcomes of patients who underwent PPV for VH caused by avulsed retinal vessels were evaluated.
RESULTS: Four patients underwent PPV for dense VH. After evacuation of the VHs, all eyes were found to have avulsed retinal vessels without retinal tears.
CONCLUSIONS: Dense VH in the setting of a PVD may preclude adequ

Expulsive hemorrhage is a catastrophic complication of intraocular surgery that can result in total loss of vision. Patients with massive hemorrhagic choroidal detachment were treated by vitrectomy and silicone oil or gas tamponade. A reattachment of the retina was achieved with stabilization of visual function. Properly timed drainage of the choroidal fluid components with pars plana vitrectomy and silicone or gas injection is a useful approach in these disorders and may salvage useful vision in complicated cases.

OBJECTIVE: To present a rare case of a giant cyst with intralesional hemorrhage associated with a peripheral retinal vasoproliferative tumor (RVPT).
METHODS: A 57-year-old male with vision loss in the right eye had an epiretinal membrane. Surgery revealed a yellowish-red mass with a large cyst in the retina, which was diagnosed as a peripheral RVPT. The lesion was observed until intralesional hemorrhage and progressive growth developed.
RESULTS: Intravitreal anti-VEGF injection reduced intralesional bleeding, and external cryotherapy achieved regression and stability of both the tumor and th

PURPOSE: In this experimental study, we quantify retinal microvasculature morphological features with depth, region, and age in immature and mature ovine eyes. These data identify morphological vulnerabilities in young eyes to inform the mechanics of retinal hemorrhage in children.
METHODS: Retinal specimens from the equator and posterior pole of preterm (n = 4) and adult (n = 9) sheep were imaged using confocal microscopy. Vessel segment length, diameter, angular asymmetry, tortuosity, and branch points were quantified using a custom image segmentation code. Significant differences were iden

BACKGROUND: Abusive head trauma (AHT) is frequently accompanied by dense/extensive retinal hemorrhages to the periphery with or without retinoschisis (complex retinal hemorrhages, cRH). cRH are uncommon without AHT or major trauma.
OBJECTIVE: The study objectives were to determine whether cRH are associated with inertial vs. contact mechanisms and are primary vs. secondary injuries.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: This retrospective study utilized a de-identified PediBIRN database of 701 children <3-years-old presenting to intensive care for head trauma. Children with motor vehicle related trauma

BACKGROUND: Retinal hemorrhages (RH) are a common manifestation of abusive head trauma (AHT) resulting from acceleration-deceleration injury with or without blunt impact. Evaluation of a child with RH requires careful consideration of these differential diagnoses. The extent to which coagulopathy alone can cause RH would be useful to understand as coagulopathy may accompany AHT.
OBJECTIVE: In this systematic review, we sought to identify whether coagulopathies have been reported with RH similar to those of AHT.
METHODS: We performed a literature search for ocular manifestations of bleeding d

OBJECTIVE: To report that retinal hemorrhage is an important but uncommon complication of epidural steroid injection, a procedure frequently employed to alleviate chronic back pain.
DESIGN: Patients who complained of visual field defects or blurred vision after receiving the injection received complete eye examinations, including fundus photography and fluorescein angiography. They were then followed up as their clinical situation dictated.
SETTING: Patients were examined in an outpatient setting in our offices.
PATIENTS: Between 1989 and 1992, five eyes of four female patients ranging in a

Patients with penetrating ocular trauma also may have severe vitreous hemorrhage and associated retinal detachment. Removing the hemorrhage and repairing the detachment can be a difficult surgical problem. Besides the limited surgical view due to the hemorrhage, an incomplete separation of the posterior hyaloid membrane can allow the detached retina to be drawn toward the port of the vitrectomy instrument, producing an inadvertent retinal tear. We have used perfluoroperhydrophenanthrene (Vitreon) to manage three cases of penetrating ocular trauma with concurrent retinal detachment and a partia

BACKGROUND: Dilated fundus examination is the clinical reference standard for retinal hemorrhage diagnosis. Obtaining a timely examination may be challenging in emergent and inpatient settings, and retinal hemorrhage may go undetected. An imaging biomarker is therefore desirable.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the frequency of ringlets of hyperintensity in orbital fat on axial fat-suppressed T2-weighted fast spin echo MR images in children with ophthalmologically-confirmed retinal hemorrhage and in a comparison group of children with benign macrocrania.

RATIONALE: High-altitude retinopathy (HAR) is a retinal disorder caused by prolonged exposure to hypoxic environments at high altitudes, posing a significant threat to visual health and potentially leading to severe vision impairment. There have been limited references of HAR, with observations of its clinical manifestations and prognosis remaining insufficient. Some reports suggest that HAR may spontaneously resolve without eliciting any noticeable symptoms. This case focuses on the disease progression and follow-up results of a typical HAR patient, and a comprehensive ophthalmic examination

8 cases of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment associated with vitreous hemorrhage were treated by first removing the blood through vitrectomy followed by routine retina reattachment procedures, such as searching for retinal breaks with indirect ophthalmoscopy and scleral buckling or encircling. Among 6 cases followed up, only 1 cases relapsed due to PVR traction. The points of note during operation were mentioned and the relationship between retinal breaks with vitreous hemorrhage and posterior vitreous detachment discussed.

A case report of a 58-year-old man with preretinal and retinal hemorrhages due to chronic subdural hematoma is presented. Three weeks after head injury in a motor vehicle accident, a few peripapillary retinal hemorrhages with slightly blurred margins of the optic disk were seen in both eyes; subretinal and preretinal hemorrhages developed subsequently. Computed tomography revealed right frontal subdural hematoma, though there were no neurologic findings. Preretinal hemorrhages associated with subdural hematoma are uncommon in adults, and no photographic evidence of such hemorrhages has been pu
