To investigate the factors affecting the utilization of retired Thoroughbred racehorses in equestrian disciplines, Bayesian linear mixed models were separately fitted using rank, round time, and obstacle faults from show-jumping competitions restricted to retired Thoroughbred racehorses as dependent variables, with the interaction between horse sex and the interval from race retirement to competition (as a proxy for transition training to show-jumping) as a fixed effect. When the interval was short (≤1 year), the estimated marginal mean of rank was statistically significantly lower in stallion

BACKGROUND: Due to the aging of the population and subsequent higher pressure on public finances, there is a need for employees in many European countries to extend their working lives. One way in which this can be achieved is by employees refraining from retiring early. Factors predicting early retirement have been identified in quantitative research, but little is known on why and how these factors influence early retirement. The present qualitative study investigated which non-health related factors influence early retirement, and why and how these factors influence early retirement.

INTRODUCTION: Retirement is a major life-course transition that can reshape health behaviors, including alcohol consumption. However, longitudinal evidence from large cross-national cohorts remains scarce.
METHODS: In this longitudinal cohort study, Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe Waves 1-8 (2004-2020) were merged, linking individual-level data from 8,998 adults aged ≥50 years who were employed at baseline and retired during follow-up. Outcomes were near-daily drinking, consumption of ≥8 alcohol units in the previous 7 days, and binge drinking (≥4-6 units on one occasion at

BACKGROUND: Boxing exposes fighters to head impacts and potential traumatic brain injury (TBI). Though research has explored the neuropsychiatric consequences of contact sports, there is limited research into Excessive Daytime Sleepiness (EDS) and its relationship to other outcomes, such as impulsiveness and depression. Therefore, this study aimed to describe EDS in retired boxers using the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) and to examine how boxing and sleepiness relate to impulsiveness and depression symptomatology.
METHODS: 86 male retired professional boxers from the Professional Fighters Br

The study explored the retirement concerns of basic school teachers in Ghana. It employed a qualitative phenomenological research design. 24 teachers aged 50-55, who were in the pre-retirement stage and approaching statutory retirement of 60, were sampled using the maximum variation sampling technique and interviewed. In-depth semistructured interviews were used to gather data, which were then subjected to thematic analysis. The findings revealed financial concerns, healthcare issues and social isolation as retirement concerns. The study found that teachers' retirement concerns were centred ar

BACKGROUND: Elderly persons often have eye diseases causing either reversible or irreversible visual loss. The prevalence of such problems among retirement home residents is unknown.
METHODS: 203 residents of retirement homes in and around Würzburg, Germany, were examined. Clinical histories were taken, including information on prior ophthalmological care, and ophthalmological examinations were performed, including visual acuity, slit-lamp examination of the anterior segment of the eye, fundoscopy (with optical coherence tomography), and measurement of the intraocular pressure.
RESULTS: 119

The aim of this study was to evaluate the relative contribution of structural foot characteristics and comorbidities to the presence of disabling foot pain in older people. One hundred seventy-two people (55 men and 117 women) aged 62 to 96 years (mean +/- SD, 80.1 +/- 6.4 years) who lived in a retirement village underwent tests of foot posture, range of motion, and deformity in addition to completing a medical history questionnaire. Disabling foot pain was determined using the Manchester Foot Pain and Disability Index. Thirty-eight subjects (22%) reported disabling foot pain. Subjects with di

The purpose of this qualitative study is to understand the reasons why elders move to retirement communities and what living in retirement communities is like from the perspective of relocated elders. Several themes emerged following qualitative analysis. The themes reflect three categories, labeled as "pushing" factors, "pulling" factors, and "overlapping" factors. Pushing factors included own or spouse's failing health, getting rid of responsibilities, not helped, facility closed out, and loneliness. Pulling factors were location, familiarity and reputation of the facility, security, and joi

Retirement savings decisions can be influenced by the fund composition of the retirement savings plan. In 2 experiments, strong composition effects were observed, with a larger percentage of resources being invested in stock funds when more stock than bond funds were offered. Although participants changed their allocations repeatedly, the opportunity to learn did not alter the composition effects. Learning processes led to positive and negative recency effects as well, providing evidence that allocations were strongly influenced by the recent performance of the different allocation options. Tw

OBJECTIVES: This study investigates the role of the partner in the retirement decision-making process. It determines the extent to which the support and intentions of partners regarding early retirement influence each other, and which partner dominates.
METHODS: Data have been collected directly from 1,052 older employees working in Dutch industry and trade, and from their spouses. Because it is conceptualized that husbands' and wives' retirement intentions/support are related in a reciprocal way, a two-stage least squares regression analysis (2SLS) is used to establish the specified mutual r

As part of a larger survey assessing health and wellbeing in men and women at retirement age, vitamin D status was examined. The sample of 110 men and women participated in a week's weighed dietary survey, with extensive interviews including socio-economic background and the collection of medical information and blood samples. Estimations of plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OHD) were included among the analyses, and were related to dietary intakes and sunlight exposure, including recent holidays in the sun. The results emphasize the major importance of ultraviolet light on the skin. Fortified an

OBJECTIVES: Computed tomography (CT) of the wrist may be challenged, due to patients' inability to extend the arm for a "Superman pose" resulting in increased radiation dose due to scatter. Alternative positions and less dose administering modalities such as 3D Cone-beam CT (CBCT) and single-shot CT could be considered. This phantom study aimed to estimate scatter radiation dose in different phantom positions using helical and single-shot CT and 3D CBCT.

B-prolymphocytic leukemia (B-PLL) is included as a distinct entity in the current World Health Organization classification of hematolymphoid neoplasms. However, the diagnosis of B-PLL has presented several challenges since its conception, and over the past decades investigations of B-PLL have revealed substantial biologic and molecular heterogeneity. These data have shown that many B-PLL cases present many similarities with other types of small B-cell lymphomas, and that small B-cell lymphomas can undergo prolymphocytoid transformation. As a result, the frequency of B-PLL has markedly decrease
