Nerve transfer for restoration of lower motor neuron-lesioned bladder and urethra function: establishment of a canine model and interim pilot study results.

OBJECTIVE: Previous patient surveys have shown that patients with spinal cord or cauda equina injuries prioritize recovery of bladder function. The authors sought to determine if nerve transfer after long-term decentralization restores bladder and sphincter function in canines. METHODS: Twenty-four female canines were included in this study. Transection of sacral roots and hypogastric nerves (S Dec) was performed in 6 animals, and 7 animals underwent this procedure with additional transection of the L7 dorsal roots (L7d+S Dec). Twelve months later, 3 L7d+S Dec animals underwent obturator-to-p

Non-surgical management of an extraoral cutaneous sinus tract of odontogenic origin.

Chronic apical periodontitis associated with dental pulp necrosis is the main cause of odontogenic extraoral cutaneous sinus openings. These tracts are often initially misdiagnosed unless the treating clinician considers a dental aetiology. This case report of a 19-year-old woman describes the diagnosis and treatment of an extraoral cutaneous sinus tract of odontogenic origin. Non-surgical conservative endodontic therapy was opted as the involved teeth were restorable. One month after the completion of obturation, there was closure of the sinus tract. One year follow-up showed complete resolut

Intentional replantation for the management of maxillary sinusitis.

AIM: To present a case that emphasizes the importance of the use of intentional replantation as a technique to successfully treat a periapical lesion and an odontogenic maxillary sinusitis through the alveolus at the same time. SUMMARY: This case report presents a patient with odontogenic maxillary sinusitis secondary to periapical disease of a maxillary molar that had previously received root canal treatment. The molar was extracted, with drainage and rinsing of the maxillary sinus. The apices were resected extra-orally, the retrograde cavities prepared with ultrasound and retrograde filling

Combined endodontic and surgical treatment of a three-rooted maxillary first premolar.

A case is reported in which endodontic treatment of a maxillary first premolar was complicated by the fact that the tooth had three roots. One of the roots was completely calcified and therefore could not be negotiated with endodontic files. There was a large periapical lesion associated with the tooth and this was surgically removed. During the surgical procedure a retrograde cavity was prepared on the calcified root using ultrasonic instruments and this was filled using Super EBA cement. Twelve months later the tooth was asymptomatic and the periapical tissues had completely healed.

Treatment of replacement resorption with Emdogain--preliminary results after 10 months.

Ankylosis of traumatized teeth in children and adolescents may inhibit further development and growth of the corresponding jawbone. Therefore, ankylosed teeth should be removed. As an alternative treatment option to autotransplantation of a premolar, intentional replantation using Emdogain may be considered, provided the ankylosis is detected at an early stage or has only affected a small area of the root. Eleven ankylosed teeth presenting with replacement resorption were treated as follows: after tooth extraction, the root canal was treated extraorally and obturated by retrograde insertion of

Iliopubic rami morphology and its vascular relationships in percutaneous retrograde fixation.

PURPOSE: Pelvic ring fractures involving the iliopubic rami can cause functional impairment. Percutaneous retrograde fixation is a less invasive procedure when compared to traditional open approaches, however precise anatomical knowledge is crucial for safe screw placement. This study aims to describe the morphology of the iliopubic rami, define a safety corridor for percutaneous screw fixation, specially focusing on the relationships between the iliopubic rami and neurovascular structures. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted on 29 patients using high-resolution compu

Volumetric Stability and Interfacial Adaptation of Tricalcium Silicate-Based Cements Used in the Lid Technique: A Micro-Computed Tomography and Scanning Electron Microscopy Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: This in vitro study evaluated the volumetric stability and interfacial adaptation of tricalcium silicate-based cements with different consistencies (sealer and putty) applied using the Lid technique for retrograde filling in apical surgery. METHODS: Thirty bovine incisors were prepared, obturated, and apically resected to create standardized 3 mm retrograde cavities. Specimens were randomly allocated to three groups (n = 10): BioRoot Flow + BioRoot RCS, EndoSequence BC Sealer + EndoSequence RRM, and Bio-C Sealer + Bio-C Repair. Flowable sealers were injected into the retrocaviti

Surgical repair of external inflammatory root resorption with resin-modified glass ionomer cement.

External inflammatory root resorption after luxation injury is a frequent complication. This article describes a case of extensive external root resorption in the middle third of the root of a maxillary right incisor. Root canal treatment was performed followed by surgical intervention. The resorptive defect was debrided and part of the root was repaired with resin-modified glass ionomer cement. Postoperative follow-up revealed complete healing.

Treatment of a large maxillary cyst with marsupialization, decompression, surgical endodontic therapy and enucleation.

A large maxillary cyst was treated for 3 months with marsupialization and decompression, followed by surgical endodontic therapy of the affected teeth and cystectomy. Although small cystic lesions will typically heal with nonsurgical endodontic therapy, larger lesions may need additional treatment. Surgical enucleation of a large cystic lesion may lead to damage of other teeth or anatomic structures. Therefore, treatment should begin with the more conservative approach of decompression, to reduce the size of the lesion, followed by apicoectomy and cystectomy.

Long-term outcomes and prognostic factors in endodontic surgery: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Persistent apical periodontitis following failed nonsurgical endodontic treatment presents significant clinical challenges. This study evaluated the long-term outcomes and prognostic factors associated with surgical treatment using calcium-enriched mixture (CEM). METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study (STROBE-compliant), 197 teeth from 169 patients underwent surgical treatment at a tertiary center between 2011 and 2024. Inclusion required documented persistent apical periodontitis unresponsive to prior orthograde endodontic therapy and a minimum radiographic follow-up of 6 mon

Gastroesophageal variceal bleeding - An overview of current treatment options.

Gastroesophageal variceal hemorrhage is the most important clinical event that results from portal hypertension. It is a lifethreatening condition that demands rapid and efficient treatment. The first step in bleeding control is hemodynamic stabilization and pharmacological treatment, which includes administration of vasoactive drugs and short-term antibiotic prophylaxis. After initial hemodynamic stabilization, endoscopic therapy should be performed. The first choice of endoscopic treatment for esophageal bleeding is endoscopic variceal ligation (EVL), or endoscopic injection sclerotherapy (E

Tooth replantation as an alternative to dental implantology in adolescent patients.

A 16-years old female patient was referred to our observation in July 2006, 14 days after an accident, with traumatic intrusive luxation of the right upper central incisor that caused the nasal floor and buccal cortical bone fracture. While the extraoral examination showed the traumatic lesions of the upper lip, the intraoral examination revealed intrusive luxation, pain and high mobility of the tooth, and bleeding of the adjacent oral tissue. The treatment protocol consisted in surgical buccal bone removal, tooth extraction, retrograde root-canal filling, and tooth repositioning in occlusion

Repair of perforating internal resorption with mineral trioxide aggregate: a case report.

A case of internal resorption with buccal perforation was found in a maxillary central incisor. Because of the extensive lesion and continuous exudation, surgical intervention was used. The apical third was obturated with gutta-percha, and the perforated lesion was repaired with mineral trioxide aggregate. The residual canal space was filled by thermoplasticized gutta-percha technique, and the coronal cavity was restored with composite resin. The symptoms and signs ceased, and the results were satisfactory at 1-year follow-up.

Retrograde treatment in an extensive implant-tooth-supported reconstruction.

Diagnosis and treatment of chronic apical periodontitis associated with an abutment tooth in an extensive tooth-implant-supported fixed prosthesis is reported. Careful, complete interpretation of clinical data was imperative because the periapical radiolucency presented around the apex of a vital tooth. A retrograde endodontic approach was used to prevent an adverse outcome to the complex rehabilitative treatment that had been performed over many years.

Periodontal tissue regeneration including cementogenesis adjacent to dentin-bonded retrograde composite fillings in humans.

The roots of two incisors were treated by apicoectomy and a retrograde dentin-bonded composite filling. Periapical healing was observed a few months later by radiography. Later, due to root fracture and marginal bone resorption, the apical parts were removed including adjacent periapical bone. A histological and scanning electron microscopic examination of the tissue showed reformation of periodontium adjacent to the composite, including reformation of a lamina dura, inserting Sharpey's fibers and cementum deposited in intimate contact with the composite. This finding is in agreement with prev

[Disruption of the pubic symphysis with overriding impacted symphysis. Apropos of a case].

INTRODUCTION: The authors report one case of overriding impacted symphysis by lateral compression injury of the pelvis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A 30 year old male presented a disruption of the symphysis pubis following a motor vehicle accident with lateral injury. Radiographs of the pelvis revealed a displacement of the right part of the symphysis behind the left one and a protrusion of the left pubic body through the right obturator foramen. CT scan did not show any sacro-iliac disruption but a fracture of the lateral part of the sacrum. An urethral injury with a complete urethral disruption w
