Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma (DLBCL) is the most common histological subtype of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma (NHL). Primary retroperitoneal DLBCL is uncommon and has seldom been reported. Extrinsic compression of the duodenum due to lesions originating from the retroperitoneum is also rare. We present a case of a 39-year-old man who presented with inability to tolerate oral intake, abdominal pain, an upper abdominal mass and postprandial bilious vomiting caused by a large DLBCL arising from the retroperitoneum causing extrinsic compression of the duodenum. The cause of compression was initially pre

INTRODUCTION: Retroperitoneal tumors (RPTs) of the pelvis are rare and often present asymptomatically. We report a rare case of human papillomavirus (HPV)-related primary retroperitoneal squamous cell carcinoma (PRSCC) that was preoperatively misdiagnosed as adnexal cancer.
CASE PRESENTATION: A menopausal 59-year-old woman presented with right leg pain persisting for two months. Imaging revealed a heterogeneous lesion in the right adnexal area; however, the uterus and left ovary appeared normal. Laboratory tests showed slightly elevated levels of cancer 125 (CA 125) and squamous cell carcinom

PURPOSE: To evaluate diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) features and signal intensity values at T2-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) imaging for differential diagnosis of benign retroperitoneal fibrosis (RPF) and plaque-like retroperitoneal malignant neoplasms.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Institutional review board approval and informed consent were obtained for this retrospective study. Fifty-one patients with plaque-like confluent retroperitoneal soft-tissue masses were divided into three groups: group I, 25 patients with malignant RPF and retroperitoneal malignant neoplasm; group II, 16 patients w

Knowledge of the surgical anatomy of the retroperitoneum is crucial for surgery of the retroperitoneal organs. Surgery is essential for treatment of retroperitoneal pathologies. The list of these diseases is extensive and comprises acute and chronic inflammatory processes (abscess, injury, hematoma, idiopathic fibrosis), metastatic neoplasms, and primary neoplasms from fibroadipose tissue, connective tissue, smooth and striated muscle, vascular tissue, somatic and sympathetic nervous tissue, extraadrenal chromaffin tissue, and lymphatic tissue. The retroperitoneum can be approached and explore

The clinicopathological features of 49 neoplasms in the retroperitoneum, but not arising directly from a major retroperitoneal organ, are described. Abdominal pain and a mass, urinary tract symptoms and evidence of pressure on venous channels or nerves were common modes of presentation. In 6 cases the neoplasms were found incidentally and in 4 patients removal of the retroperitoneal mass was an elective procedure during the treatment of metastatic testicular germ cell tumour. Histopathological diagnosis revealed 4 major tumour types: germ cell neoplasms, non-germ cell metastatic carcinoma, sof

RATIONALE: Extrauterine leiomyoma occasionally occurs in rare locations with unusual growth patterns, especially pelvic retroperitoneal leiomyoma, which brings great challenges for surgeons to make a diagnosis. It is essential to distinguish benign from malignant retroperitoneal neoplasms according to the imaging manifestations. Laparotomy and laparoscopy are the common options for pelvic retroperitoneal neoplasms, while they may cause side effects during operation such as secondary damage. Appropriate surgical techniques should be adopted to ensure the complete excision of neoplasms meanwhile

A 25-year-old woman had a mass of approximately 65 cm × 33 cm × 102 cm, located in the left paraaortic area on CT scan. It was diagnosed as retroperitoneal malignant neoplasm on imaging. Afterward, open retroperitoneal tumor excision was performed. At laparotomy, the mass was carefully dissected from the ureter, renal artery, and aorta and excised as en-bloc. The pathological result was "myopericytoma." Histologically, the pathological findings characterized a pericytic neoplasm characterized by a perivascular growth of myoid tumor cells. In addition, there were uniform, oval-shaped cells with

Retroperitoneal fibrosis is the formation of a fibrotic plaque in the prelumbar or presacral area which becomes clinically significant when it produces ureteral obstruction. It can occur as a result of taking certain drugs, retroperitoneal fluid collections, inflammatory disease of various intraabdominal organs, previous surgery or radiation therapy, and various metastatic neoplasms. The majority of the causes of retroperitoneal fibrosis are considered idiopathic.

INTRODUCTION: The retroperitoneum can host a wide spectrum of pathologies, including a variety of rare benign tumours and malignant neoplasms that can be either primary or metastatic lesions. Retroperitoneal tumours can cause a diagnostic dilemma and present several therapeutic challenges because of their rarity, relative late presentation and anatomical location, often in close relationship with several vital structures in the retroperitoneal space.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted using PubMed. Relevant international articles published in the last ten y

Retroperitoneal benign lipomas are extremely rare and represent about 2.9% of all primary retroperitoneal tumors. About 80% of the tumors in the retroperitoneal cavities are malignant neoplasms. We experienced a case of a retroperitoneal lipoma simulating an ovarian mature cystic teratoma. A diagnosis was correctly made by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) prior to surgery, and a total tumorectomy was performed. The retroperitoneal lipoma was recognized to have arisen from the urinary bladder. Histological sections revealed a tumor consisting of typical adipose cells without atypia. These types

Most cases of retroperitoneal fibrosis are considered idiopathic. We report an interesting case of idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis with the emphasis on the importance of pathology to establish the diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Retroperitoneal lipoma is an extremely rare neoplasm.
AIMS: The authors report a case of giant retroperitoneal lipoma in a 32-year-old white female, with a history of pain and an abdominal mass over a 2-year period. Total abdominal ultrasonography and barium enema showed a large mass located in the retroperitoneal space behind the ascending colon. Laparotomy showed a large encapsulated tumor measuring 20 x 13 x 10 cm and weighing 3.400 g. The histological study revealed a benign neoplasm of fatty cells.
CONCLUSION: The patient remains well 17 years after surgery, without recurren

Synchronous triple primary malignant neoplasms, namely, retroperitoneal myxoid liposarcoma, sigmoid colon carcinoma and uterocervical carcinoma in situ in a 42-year-old female is reported. The retroperitoneal sarcoma and colonic carcinoma were resected simultaneously, while a hysterectomy was performed five months later. No genetic influence could be elicited in the present case. The synchronous triple primary, malignant neoplasms in this case should be considered as having arisen by mere chance. Other cases in which triple or more primary malignancies were resected are briefly reviewed. In ad

Purpose. In the clinical work-up of a retroperitoneal mass, the diagnosis of soft tissue sarcoma is often not considered. Incidence rates of various malignant and benign retroperitoneal tumours were studied to determine the incidence of soft tissue sarcoma in comparison with other neoplasms in the retroperitoneal space.Method. Nation-wide data on retroperitoneal tumours, collected prospectively over a 5-year period (1 January 1989- 1 January 1994), were supplied by the Netherlands Cancer Registry and The Dutch Network and National Database for Pathology.Results. Seven hundred and six patients

Retroperitoneal neoplasms are rare in both human and veterinary medicine, particularly in cats, where they account for less than 0.1 % of all neoplasms. This report describes a rare case of retroperitoneal T-cell lymphoma in a 7-month-old, feline leukaemia virus (FeLV)-positive Domestic Shorthair cat, leading to urethral and intestinal obstruction and subsequently cystitis and megacolon, respectively. The cat presented with clinical signs of weight loss, vomiting, tenesmus and urinary retention, and was diagnosed with a retroperitoneal mass compressing the colon and the urinary bladder. Due to

BACKGROUND: Resection of large retroperitoneal neoplasms may injure the femoral nerve, thereby causing a permanent neurological deficit. We used electrical neurophysiological monitoring to identify, map, and preserve the femoral nerve during surgical resection to reduce the risk of neurological deficit.
METHODS: Seven patients with retroperitoneal neoplasms underwent eight resections. Compound muscle action potentials (CMAPs) were recorded from needle electrodes placed in the iliacus, quadriceps, and sartorius muscles. Spontaneous electromyography (EMG) was continuously monitored from the sam

Soft tissue tumors of the abdomen and retroperitoneum encompass a wide range of benign and malignant neoplasms. Retroperitoneal sarcomas, the most common, are composed of rare malignancies with numerous histiotypes. Surgery remains the cornerstone of treatment and the only curative option for retroperitoneal sarcomas. With histiotype-dependent local and distant recurrences, it is imperative these cases are discussed in a multidisciplinary tumor board setting at specialized sarcoma centers. This review discusses the current evidence for the management of abdominal and retroperitoneal soft tissu

Retroperitoneal fibrosis, an uncommon and ill-defined condition, has a variety of causes and presenting features. The fibrotic process often produces ureteral obstruction and compression of surrounding structures. Pain in the flank, lower abdomen or lumbosacral region is the most common presenting symptom. Certain drugs, neoplasms, retroperitoneal injury or infections may all initiate the fibrotic process. This article describes a case of retroperitoneal fibrosis in a 34-year-old man who had been receiving a beta-adrenergic blocking agent.

INTRODUCTION: Retroperitoneal mucinous cystic neoplasms are uncommon, and little is known about the etiology of the disease. Malignant forms of these are extremely rare. Here, we report a case of primary retroperitoneal mucinous cystadenocarcinoma (PRMC), which demonstrated unexpectedly aggressive progression despite finding only a limited area of adenocarcinoma.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 62-year-old woman with a complaint of abdominal discomfort was admitted to the hospital. Abdominal CT and MRI showed multiple large retroperitoneal cysts dislocating the right kidney nearly to the center of th
