PURPOSE: Total knee arthroplasty is a well-established procedure that aims to improve pain, mobility and function. Multiple studies have demonstrated a strong correlation between patient satisfaction and their preoperative expectations, including return to sport. This study aims to assess the level of post-operative activity and rate of return to sport after TKA in an Australian population.
METHODS: A retrospective electronic survey was distributed amongst patients that were 1-3 years post total knee arthroplasty. Patient characteristics and sport participation pre and post operatively was as

INTRODUCTION: Hallux rigidus (HR) is a common degenerative condition of the first metatarsophalangeal joint (MTPJ), particularly limiting in active adults and athletes. While joint-sacrificing procedures such as arthrodesis are effective, joint-preserving techniques remain preferable in patients wishing to maintain function and mobility. The modified Youngswick osteotomy offers such an option by decompressing and realigning the joint.
METHODS: This retrospective observational study included 55 physically active patients (mean age: 42.8 ± 8.5 anni years) with grade II HR who underwent modified

Superior labrum, anterior and posterior (SLAP) lesions are common and identified in up to 26% of shoulder arthroscopies, with the greatest risk factor appearing to be overhead sporting activities. Symptomatic patients are treated with physical therapy and activity modification. However, after the failure of non-operative measures or when activity modification is precluded by athletic demands, SLAP tears have been managed with debridement, repair, biceps tenodesis or biceps tenotomy. Recently, there have been noticeable trends in the operative management of SLAP lesions with older patients rece

Foot and ankle sports injuries encompass a wide spectrum of conditions from simple contusions or sprains that resolve within days to more severe injuries that change the trajectory of an athlete's sporting career. If missed, severe injuries could lead to prolonged absence from the sport and therefore a catastrophic impact on future performance. In this article, we discuss the presentation of the commonest foot and ankle sports injuries and share recent evidence to support an accurate diagnosis and best management practice.

PURPOSE: To reduce the length of the Shoulder Instability-Return to Sport After Injury (SIRSI) scale and determine the predictive validity of the short version compared with the original form.
METHODS: This study included patients who underwent an arthroscopic Bankart repair or open Latarjet procedure between 2017 and 2019. One group was used for the SIRSI scale-reduction process, and a second group was used to test the predictive validity of the proposed short SIRSI scale. The Cronbach α value was used to evaluate internal consistency. Validity was determined by calculating the Pearson corre

Sport-related concussion (SRC) is a multifaceted brain injury linked to altered autonomic activity, which may persist and contribute to prolonged recovery and persisting post-concussion symptoms (PPCS). This exploratory cross-sectional study addressed whether athletes with prolonged recovery show altered nocturnal autonomic activity after SRC, offering potential insights into PPCS and biomarkers. Nocturnal autonomic activity and concussion symptoms were evaluated and compared between 17 SRC athletes and 17 matched control athletes. SRC athletes were classified by individual return to sport (RT

BACKGROUND: Timing of return to sport (RTS) after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) is a multifaceted decision for athletes. The purpose of this study was to identify patient-related predictors (age, sex, graft type, psychological readiness, and the duration of physical therapy (PT) of time to pass RTS criteria.
METHODS: Fifty-four participants within 5-15 months of ACLR completed testing as part of RTS planning, including quadriceps strength (isometric and 1-repetition maximum using a knee extension machine), 4 single leg hop tests (single, crossover, triple, and 6-meter timed

Achieving Return to Sport (RTS) is crucial in managing ankle fractures for athletes. This study aimed to identify RTS factors post-surgical fixation of ankle fractures. A retrospective analysis was conducted on 93 active patients with surgically treated displaced or unstable ankle fractures from January 2020 to January 2021. The median follow-up was 2.12 years. Clinical, functional, and radiographic aspects were evaluated. Among the athletes, 82.8 % resumed sports post-surgery, with 26.9 % returning within 3 months and 75.3 % at 1 year. At 1 year, 40.9 % regained their pre-injury activity leve

After sports-related concussion (SRC), some athletes return before full recovery due to time-based return-to-play recommendations or the masking of symptoms, potentially increasing future injury risk. We hypothesize that current return-to-play decisions for nonprofessional athletes results in heightened risk of subsequent injury and should involve symptom-based assessment including multifactorial assessment of the qualities known to be impacted by SRC.
