Across the United States, Dirofilaria immitis (Leidy), commonly known as dog heartworm, poses a significant threat to common pets, including dogs, ferrets, and cats, but also to exotic and feral animals. This study focused on surveillance of D. immitis in mosquitoes collected in the Salt Lake Valley of Utah, with an emphasis on animals housed at a local zoo. Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) from the genera Culex, Culiseta, and Aedes were collected, identified, sorted, and subjected to DNA extraction. In the summer of 2023, extracted DNA from 320 pooled samples of 3,459 mosquitoes was tested by

Dirofilaria immitis, the causative agent of dog heartworm disease, is an important cause of canine morbidity and mortality, expensive to treat, and severe infections are often fatal. Much is known about the pathogen in the canine host, yet little is known on the basic ecology of the nematode in the mosquito vector. Thus, to evaluate the effectiveness of collection techniques on ability to capture dog heartworm-infected mosquitoes (Diptera Culicidae), we conducted a field study spanning 111 wk. Four methods were used: two aspirators types, sweep netting, and a CDC trap. All sites had canines pr

This study elucidated for the first time, under laboratory conditions, the susceptibility of Lymnaea columella to infective juveniles of Heterorhabditis baujardi LPP7. Exposure to the nematodes induced an average mortality rate of 66.66% in the population of L. columella, with the highest values attained from the second week after exposure onward. In addition, all the reproductive parameters analyzed (total number of eggs, number of egg masses, number of eggs laid/snail, embryo hatching rate and content of galactogen stored in the albumen gland) changed as a result of the infection. The result

Heterorhabditis bacteriophora is an entomopathogenic nematode (EPN) that is mutually associated with Photorhabdus luminescens, utilized globally for biological control of numerous organisms. Freshwater snails of the species Biomphalaria glabrata have been incriminated as the main intermediate hosts of Schistosoma mansoni in Brazil, but virtually nothing is known about the susceptibility of these gastropod to EPNs. Information in this respect is relevant for control of these intermediate hosts, and thus of the helminthiases they transmit. This paper for the first time reports the susceptibility

Rhabdias nicaraguensis n. sp. (Rhabditida: Rhabditidae) from the lungs of Norops capito (Sauria: Polychrotidae) is described and illustrated. Rhabdias nicaraguensis n. sp. represents the 54th species assigned to the genus and the 12th from the Neotropical realm. Of the 12 Neotropical Rhabdias species, nicaraguensis is most similar to tobagoensis and vellardi. These 3 species have equatorial placement of the vulva, inflated cuticle, and 6 small circumoral lips. Rhabdias nicaraguensis is easily separated from R. tobagoensis by the shape of the buccal cavity and from R. vellardi by body size and

Vulva formation is a paradigm for evolutionary developmental biology in nematodes. Not only do the number of vulval precursor cells (VPCs) differ between members in the Rhabditidae and Diplogastridae, they are also sculpted via different developmental mechanisms, either by cell fusion in most Rhabditidae or by programmed cell death in the Diplogastridae. In this context, the species Poikilolaimus oxycercus is the only known species in the family Rhabditidae to have a subset of the Pn.p cells commit programmed cell death during the patterning of the VPCs. Our current study introduces P. oxycerc

PURPOSE: The Bengal slow loris (Nycticebus bengalensis) is an endangered and heavily trafficked primate. Illegal trade and repatriation of confiscated slow lorises into the wild may facilitate parasite exposure and spread. However, baseline information on its parasitic fauna remains extremely limited, particularly regarding nematode occurrence and distribution.
METHODS: During necropsies of two deceased individuals from northeastern Bangladesh, numerous live adult pinworms were recovered. We assessed morphological features and combined them with genetic data to identify the worms.
RESULTS: P

Pelodera strongyloides is a free-living soil nematode of the order Rhabditida. We report an 18-year-old man with P strongyloides skin infestation. In this case, pruritic follicular papulopustules developed on the buttocks, then the right flank. Skin scrapings revealed many live rhabditiform larvae that were cultured adult worms and hatched ova, identified as P strongyloides . The eruption was treated effectively with topical 1% gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane ointment.

Halicephalobus gingivalis is a small saprophytic rhabditid nematode, represented only by females with a typical rhabditoid oesophagus and one egg in the uterus, capable of infecting vertebrates. This opportunistic parasite present in the soil, manure and decaying humus, is thought to penetrate through previous injuries to the mouth, eyes and skin of horses and migrate to various organs. The brain is one such organ, where the females lay their eggs, leading to malacia and causing a sudden onset of neurological signs, such as anorexia, ataxia, urinary incontinence, blindness, decreased menace an

The success of Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita (Schneider) Andrássy (Rhabditida: Rhabditidae) as a biological control agent of molluscs has led to a worldwide interest in phasmarhabditids. However, scant information is available on the lifecycle development of species within the genus. In the current study, the development of P. hermaphrodita, Phasmarhabditis papillosa, Phasmarhabditis bohemica and Phasmarhabditis kenyaensis were studied using ex vivo cultures, in order to improve our understanding of their biology. Infective juveniles (IJs) of each species were added to 1 g of defrosted homogen
