Natural infection of white grubs (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) with entomopathogenic nematodes in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa.

White grubs are root feeding larvae of beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) that are sporadic pests in agriculture and can lead to economic damage. The grubs feed on the roots of plants, while the adult beetle can bore into underground stems, as well as cause defoliation of plants. Sporadic incidence of larvae with symptoms of nematode infections were detected in wattle and sugarcane plantations in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. The larvae with infection symptoms were isolated, washed, and put on water traps to collect infective juveniles of possible nematode infections. Three speci

In an arms race between host and parasite, a lungworm's ability to infect a toad is determined by host susceptibility not parasite preference.

Evolutionary arms races can alter both parasite infectivity and host resistance, and it is difficult to separate the effects of these twin determinants of infection outcomes. We used a co-introduced, invasive host-parasite system (the lungworm Rhabdias pseudosphaerocephala and cane toads Rhinella marina), where rapid adaptation and dispersal have led to population differences in infection resistance. We quantified behavioural responses of parasite larvae to skin-chemical cues of toads from different invasive populations, and rates at which juvenile hosts became infected following standardized

Zoonotic Parasites in Marmosets (Callithrix Spp.) From Southern Brazil: Insights From a One Health Perspective.

BACKGROUND: Currently, six species of Callithrix are frequently observed in anthropized and degraded environments in different regions of Brazil. This occupation favors interactions with humans and increases the risk of infection by parasites with zoonotic potential. This study assessed the occurrence of enteroparasites in free-ranging Callithrix spp. from different municipalities in Paraná state, Brazil, from a One Health approach. METHODS: Faecal samples of 37 specimens of C. penicillata, C. jacchus, and hybrid species were analyzed. RESULTS: The most frequent parasite forms observed inclu

Steinernema hattingi n. sp., a new entomopathogenic nematode (Nematoda: Steinernematidae) from South Africa.

A new entomopathogenic nematode, Steinernema hattingi n. sp., was isolated during a survey in Mpumalanga Province of South Africa. Morphological and morphometric traits place the species in the glaseri-group, characterised by large infective juveniles (IJs) with average body length exceeding 1000 μm. The IJs of S. hattingi n. sp. have a mean body length of 1059 μm, lateral fields composed of eight equally spaced ridges (nine incisures) at mid-body (formula 2, 6, 8, 4, 2), a relatively short tail (c ratio 16 on average) with a hyaline region occupying approximately 45% of its length, and are re

Overcoming chemical barriers: a new species of Rhabdias (Nematoda: Rhabdiasidae) from Dendrobates tinctorius (Anura: Dendrobatidae) in the Brazilian Amazon.

The nematode genus Rhabdias comprises over 100 species of parasitic nematodes that infect amphibians and reptiles, with a wide geographical distribution. To date, 25 species have been reported from the Neotropical region. Despite this diversity, few integrative studies, combining morphological and molecular data have been conducted to characterize species within the genus. Therefore, the main objective of the present study is to describe, through an integrative approach, a new species of Rhabdias found parasitizing the lungs of an anuran with a high concentration of skin toxins, Dendrobates ti

Excreted secreted products from the parasitic nematode Steinernema carpocapsae manipulate the Drosophila melanogaster immune response.

Steinernema carpocapsae is an entomopathogenic nematode (EPN) that rapidly infects and kills a wide range of insect hosts and has been linked to host immunosuppression during the initial stages of infection. The lethal nature of S. carpocapsae infections has previously been credited to its symbiotic bacteria; however, it has become evident that the nematodes are able to effectively kill their hosts independently through their excretion/secretion products (ESPs). Here we examined how the adult Drosophila melanogaster immune system is modulated in response to S. carpocapsae ESPs in an attempt to

Pelodera (syn. Rhabditis) strongyloides as a cause of dermatitis--a report of 11 dogs from Finland.

BACKGROUND: Pelodera (Rhabditis) strongyloides is a small saprophytic nematode that lives in decaying organic matter. On rare occasions, it can invade the mammalian skin, causing a pruritic, erythematous, alopecic and crusting dermatitis on skin sites that come into contact with the ground. Diagnosis of the disease is based on case history (a dog living outdoors on damp straw bedding) with characteristic skin lesions and on the demonstration of typical larvae in skin scrapings or biopsy. Pelodera (rhabditic) dermatitis cases have been reported mainly from Central European countries and the Uni

New species of Rhabdias (Nematoda: Rhabdiasidae) from Bufo occidentalis (Anura: Bufonidae) from Sierra Madre del Sur, Mexico.

Rhabdias kuzmini n. sp., a parasite of the lungs of Bufo occidentalis, is described and illustrated. This Mexican taxon differs from the related species in the genus by the possession of 4 lips (2 subdorsal and 2 subventral) and 2 lateral pseudolabia, corpus not inflated, a larger barrel-shaped buccal capsule, equatorial vulva, and the presence of a slightly swollen cuticle in the anterior and posterior ends of the body. This is the 16th species described in the Neotropical Realm and the first species of Rhabdias described from endemic anurans in México.

Diploscapter coronata infection in Thailand: report of the first case.

A 73-year-old Thai woman living in Mueang District, Saraburi Province, central Thailand presented with numerous hookworm-like nematodes, finally revealed as Diploscapter coronata, by fecal culture. The patient exhibited no significant clinical signs of the gastrointestinal or genitourinary systems, and was generally not ill as a result of this unusual infection. Less commonly, patients have presented with symptoms and signs of Diploscapter coronata infection. However, potentially serious consequences can occur where people have exposure to an environment that has been contaminated with infecte

Histologic characterization of eosinophilic encephalitis in horses in Florida.

Eosinophils within the central nervous system are abnormal and are usually associated with fungal or parasitic infections in horses. Causative agents include Halicephalobus gingivalis, Sarcocystis neurona, and Neospora hughesi. Confirmation of these organisms via specific testing is typically not performed, and final diagnoses are often presumptive. With molecular technology, many of these organisms can now be confirmed. This is important for emerging and zoonotic pathogens, including Angiostrongylus cantonensis, an emerging parasite of interest in the southeastern United States. We retrospect

Morphometric and molecular characteristics of Labeonema synodontisi n. comb. (Nematoda: Atractidae) from the West African fishes.

Numerous nematodes were found in the rectum of three fish species Synodontis ocellifer, S. nigrita, and S. schall (Mochokidae, Siluriformes) from the Gambia River and Mare Simenti, National Park Niokolo Koba, Senegal. A nematode species Raillietnema synodontisi Vassiliadès, 1973 (host S. ocellifer), is redescribed using morphometric (including scanning electron microscopy) and molecular characteristics and transferred into the genus Labeonema Puylaert, 1970. It is morphologically and metrically similar to Labeonema intermedium Puylaert, 1970, the other congeneric species (L. bainae Baker, 1982

Sand crickets (Gryllus firmus) have low susceptibility to entomopathogenic nematodes and their pathogenic bacteria.

The entomopathogenic nematode, Steinernema scapterisci, a specialist parasite of crickets, has been successfully used to combat the southern mole cricket, Neoscapteriscus borellii, which is an invasive pest of turf grass. As an entomopathogenic nematode, S. scapterisci causes rapid death of the insects it infects and uses bacteria to facilitate its parasitism. However, our understanding of the relative contributions of the nematode, S. scapterisci, and its bacterial symbiont, Xenorhabdus innexi, to parasitism remains limited. Here we utilized the sand cricket, Gryllus firmus, as a model host t

Endoparasites infecting exotic captive amphibian pet and zoo animals (Anura, Caudata) in Germany.

Alongside exotic reptiles, amphibians, such as toads, frogs, salamanders, and newts, are nowadays considered popular pets worldwide. As reported for other exotic pet animals, amphibians are known to harbor numerous gastrointestinal parasites. Nonetheless, very little data are available on captive amphibian parasitic diseases. In this study, we applied direct saline fecal smears (DSFS) to examine in total 161 stool samples from 41 different amphibian species belonging to the orders Anura and Caudata. In addition, carbolfuchsin-smear (CFS) staining (n = 74 samples) was used to detect amphibian C

First report of Rhabdias (Nematoda: Rhabdiasoidea) from lungs of montane chameleons in Cameroon: description of two new species and notes on biology.

The lung nematodes of the genus Rhabdias parasitic in chameleons were previously only known from east Africa and Madagascar. Two new species are described from Cameroon: i) Rhabdias okuensis n. sp., type-host Chamaeleo (Trioceros) quadricomis gracilior, from Mont Oku, is frequent; it resembles R. jarki from Burundi, with a short buccal capsule and a long, thin oesophagus, and is distinguished by its large cervical vesicle and cephalic characters (mouth aperture, papillae). The female parasites are hermaphroditic (spermatozoa identified) and they pierce the lung wall and induce lesions, as R. j

Toxicity of phenolic compounds to entomopathogenic nematodes: A case study with Heterorhabditis bacteriophora exposed to lentisk (Pistacia lentiscus) extracts and their chemical components.

Insects show adaptive plasticity by ingesting plant secondary compounds, such as phenolic compounds, that are noxious to parasites. This work examined whether exposure to phenolic compounds affects the development of insect parasitic nematodes. As a model system for parasitic life cycle, we used Heterorhabditis bacteriophora (Rhabditida; Heterorhabditiade) grown with Photorhabdita luminescens supplemented with different concentrations of plant phenolic extracts (0, 600, 1200, 2400 ppm): a crude ethanol extract of lentisk (Pistacia lentiscus) or lentisk extract fractionated along a scale of hyd

A biological invasion modifies the dynamics of a host-parasite arms race.

By imposing novel selection pressures on both participants, biological invasions can modify evolutionary 'arms races' between hosts and parasites. A spatially replicated cross-infection experiment reveals strong spatial divergence in the ability of lungworms (Rhabdias pseudosphaerocephala) to infect invasive cane toads (Rhinella marina) in Australia. In areas colonized for longer than 20 years, toads are more resistant to infection by local strains of parasites than by allopatric strains. The situation reverses at the invasion front, where super-infective parasites have evolved. Invasion-induc

The susceptibility of different species of sciarid flies to entomopathogenic nematodes.

Steinernema feltiae is the most effective nematode for controlling sciarid species but S. carpocapsae does exert some control. S. feltiae is less effective at 30 degrees C than at 22 degrees C. S. anomali, S. riobravis and two Heterorhabditis spp. gave better control at the higher temperature. All six sciarid species tested were susceptible to S. feltiae but there was some variation in the level of infection. UK isolates of S. feltiae were more effective against UK sciarids than the nematode isolates from other European countries which were tested. Adult sciarids are infected by S. feltiae and
