Phylogeography of the Rhabditis (Pellioditis) marina species complex: evidence for long-distance dispersal, and for range expansions and restricted gene flow in the northeast Atlantic.

Pinpointing processes that structure the geographical distribution of genetic diversity of marine species and lead to speciation is challenging because of the lack of obvious dispersal barriers and the likelihood of substantial (passive) dispersal in oceans. In addition, cryptic radiations with sympatric distributions abound in marine species, challenging the allopatric speciation mechanism. Here, we present a phylogeographical study of the marine nematode species complex Rhabditis (Pellioditis) marina to investigate processes shaping genetic structure and speciation. Rhabditis (P.) marina liv

Synthesis and in vitro anthelmintic properties of some new dithiaarsanes.

Fifteen new trivalent organoarsenicals were synthesized and evaluated for anthelmintic properties on three in vitro models, infective larvae of the filaria Molinema dessetae, infective larvae of an intestinal nematode, Nippostrongylus brasiliensis and adults and larvae of Rhabditis pseudoelongata a free living nematode. On the M. dessetae model, the most active compound after a 24 h incubation period had an EC50 of 0.02 mumol/l (compound 3a). Twelve compounds had an EC50 lower than 1 mumol/l whereas potassium melarsonyl exhibited an EC50 of 45.6 mumol/l. After 7 days incubation time, compound

A biological invasion modifies the dynamics of a host-parasite arms race.

By imposing novel selection pressures on both participants, biological invasions can modify evolutionary 'arms races' between hosts and parasites. A spatially replicated cross-infection experiment reveals strong spatial divergence in the ability of lungworms (Rhabdias pseudosphaerocephala) to infect invasive cane toads (Rhinella marina) in Australia. In areas colonized for longer than 20 years, toads are more resistant to infection by local strains of parasites than by allopatric strains. The situation reverses at the invasion front, where super-infective parasites have evolved. Invasion-induc

Genes involved in DMSO-mediated yield increase of entomopathogenic nematodes.

Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) associated with their symbiotic bacteria can effectively kill insect pests, in agriculture, forestry and floriculture. Industrial-scale production techniques for EPNs have been established, including solid and liquid monoculture systems. It is found that supplement of 0.01% dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) to the culture medium significantly enhances the recovery and infective juvenile yield of these nematodes. However, the specific nematode genes responding to DMSO is not yet clear. This study identified differentially expressed genes and associated enriched pathway

Microhabitat Differences in the Benthic Substrata Affect Parasitism in a Pulmonate Snail Host, Helisoma anceps.

The microhabitats in which hosts live can potentially influence the ability and success of parasites in finding and infecting these hosts. The infection dynamics of both digenetic trematode parasites and a nematode parasite (Daubaylia potomaca) infecting a pulmonate snail, Helisoma anceps , were observed in a small North Carolina lake using 3 different classifications of substratum type based on percent coverage by leaves and debris. There were no differences in snail site occupancy or density between substratum types, but small-scale differences in microhabitat impacted parasite prevalence an

Entomopathogenic nematodes as control agents of developmental stages of the black-legged tick, Ixodes scapularis.

Thirteen species or strains of entomopathogenic nematodes of the genera Steinernema and Heterorhabditis were tested in vitro against unfed and engorged larvae, nymphs, and adults of the black-legged tick, Ixodes scapularis. Nematodes were pathogenic to engorged female ticks, but not to unfed or engorged larvae, nymphs, males, and unfed females. Steinernema riobravis (355) and Heterorhabditis megidis (M145) killed ticks most rapidly, with mean day of death postinfection of 2.5 and 3.5 days, respectively. However, all nematode strains and species were lethal to engorged female ticks within 7.5 d

The susceptibility of different species of sciarid flies to entomopathogenic nematodes.

Steinernema feltiae is the most effective nematode for controlling sciarid species but S. carpocapsae does exert some control. S. feltiae is less effective at 30 degrees C than at 22 degrees C. S. anomali, S. riobravis and two Heterorhabditis spp. gave better control at the higher temperature. All six sciarid species tested were susceptible to S. feltiae but there was some variation in the level of infection. UK isolates of S. feltiae were more effective against UK sciarids than the nematode isolates from other European countries which were tested. Adult sciarids are infected by S. feltiae and

Cyclic dipeptides from rhabditid entomopathogenic nematode-associated Bacillus cereus have antimicrobial activities.

The cell free culture filtrate of Bacillus cereus associated with an entomopathogenic nematode, Rhabditis (Oscheius) sp. exhibited strong antimicrobial activity. The ethyl acetate extract of the bacterial culture filtrate was purified by silica gel column chromatography to obtain four bioactive compounds. The structure and absolute stereochemistry of these compounds were determined based on extensive spectroscopic analyses (FABMS, (1)H NMR, (13)C NMR, (1)H-(1)H COSY, (1)H-(13)C HMBC) and Marfey's method. The compounds were identified as cyclic dipeptides (CDPs): cyclo(L-Pro-L-Trp), cyclo(L-Leu

Cultivation of the rhabditid Poikilolaimus oxycercus as a laboratory nematode for genetic analyses.

Vulva formation is a paradigm for evolutionary developmental biology in nematodes. Not only do the number of vulval precursor cells (VPCs) differ between members in the Rhabditidae and Diplogastridae, they are also sculpted via different developmental mechanisms, either by cell fusion in most Rhabditidae or by programmed cell death in the Diplogastridae. In this context, the species Poikilolaimus oxycercus is the only known species in the family Rhabditidae to have a subset of the Pn.p cells commit programmed cell death during the patterning of the VPCs. Our current study introduces P. oxycerc

A multiyear survey of helminths from wild saddleback (Leontocebus weddelli) and emperor (Saguinus imperator) tamarins.

The establishment of baseline data on parasites from wild primates is essential to understand how changes in habitat or climatic disturbances will impact parasite-host relationships. In nature, multiparasitic infections of primates usually fluctuate temporally and seasonally, implying that the acquisition of reliable data must occur over time. Individual parasite infection data from two wild populations of New World primates, the saddleback (Leontocebus weddelli) and emperor (Saguinus imperator) tamarin, were collected over 3 years to establish baseline levels of helminth prevalence and parasi

Molecular and morphological characterization of Rhabdias luzonensis n. sp. (Nematoda: Rhabdiasidae) from Sanguirana luzonensis (Boulenger, 1896) (Amphibia: Ranidae) from Luzon Island, Philippines.

A lung-dwelling nematode Rhabdias luzonensis n. sp. is described based on 6 specimens collected from the Luzon frog, Sanguirana luzonensis, on Luzon Island, Philippines. The new species is readily distinguishable from congeneric nematodes occurring in eastern and south-eastern Asia by the very distinct structure of the buccal capsule which consists of anterior thick-walled portion and posterior thin-walled portion; both parts are similar in length. Rhabdias luzonensis is the third species of the genus described from Philippines and the first species described from amphibians of this archipelag

Infection by the Lungworm Rhabdias pseudosphaerocephala Affects the Expression of Immune-Related microRNAs by Its Co-Evolved Host, the Cane Toad Rhinella marina.

Parasites may suppress the immune function of infected hosts using microRNAs (miRNAs) to prevent protein production. Nonetheless, little is known about the diversity of miRNAs and their mode(s) of action. In this study, we investigated the effects of infection by a parasitic lungworm (Rhabdias pseudosphaerocephala) on miRNA and mRNA expression of its host, the invasive cane toad (Rhinella marina). To investigate the cane toad's innate and adaptive immune response to this parasite, we compared miRNA and mRNA expression in naïve toads that had never been infected by lungworms to toads that were

Pathogenicity of Moraxella osloensis, a bacterium associated with the nematode Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita, to the slug Deroceras reticulatum.

Moraxella osloensis, a gram-negative bacterium, is associated with Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita, a nematode parasite of slugs. This bacterium-feeding nematode has potential for the biological control of slugs, especially the grey garden slug, Deroceras reticulatum. Infective juveniles of P. hermaphrodita invade the shell cavity of the slug, develop into self-fertilizing hermaphrodites, and produce progeny, resulting in host death. However, the role of the associated bacterium in the pathogenicity of the nematode to the slug is unknown. We discovered that M. osloensis alone is pathogenic to D.

The taxonomic ambiguity of North African Rhabdias Stiles & Hassall, 1905 requires a deep revision and re-evaluation to define the genuine taxa. Based on newly gathered specimens, the African/Saharo-Arabian Rhabdias aegyptiaca El-Garhy & Garo, 2006 is redescribed for specimens collected from the lungs of the common African toad, Sclerophrys regularis (Reuss) (Anura: Bufonidae) from Egypt, northeast Africa. Rhinella marina (Amphibia: Bufonidae) Versus Rhabdias paraensis (Nematoda: Rhabdiasidae): Expanding the View on a Natural Infection.

Amphibian and reptile lungs are frequently infected with Rhabdias parasites, and this condition ultimately leads to reduced survival, performance, and growth because of granulomatous inflammation, nodule formation, and nematodal pneumonia onset. Here we investigate the histopathological features of naturally infected Rhinella marina by the lung nematode Rhabdias paraensis. A total of 10 host animals were captured in peridomiciliar areas in the eastern Brazilian Amazon, and anatomic-histological analyses were performed on both the infected and non-infected lungs of these amphibians.
