Malignant rhabdoid tumor of the colon: report of a case.

A malignant rhabdoid tumor of the colon is very rare and only three cases have been previously described. A 76-year-old man was admitted to the hospital complaining of epigastralgia. An elastic mass was palpable in the right upper abdomen. A barium enema and endoscopic examination showed a giant gyrate tumor arising from the cecum. Abdominal ultrasonography and a computed tomography scan revealed the tumor to be located in the colon associated with multiple liver metastases and gallbladder stones. A right colectomy and cholecystectomy were thus performed. The tumor was histologically composed

Malignant rhabdoid tumor of the kidney--a case report.

Malignant rhabdoid tumor is a distinct renal tumor in children. It had been regarded as a rhabdomyosarcomatoid variant of Wilms' tumor, but it is now thought as a separate entity. We report a case of malignant rhabdoid tumor of the kidney in a 26-month-old girl who presented with a left abdominal mass. Grossly, a large mass in the lower pole of the left kidney was well encapsulated and measured 4 x 4 x 3.5cm. On cross section, it was soft and yellowish white and showed multifocal necroses. The mass was mainly located in the medial medullary portion and compressed the renal pelvis laterally. Mi

Malignant rhabdoid tumor-The great mimicker: Two case reports.

Malignant rhabdoid tumors (MRT) represent a very rare group of tumors in infants that have an aggressive clinical behavior, are refractory to therapy, and have a high mortality rate. We present two cases that demonstrate the importance of early diagnosis for further treatment. The first case was a 4 and a half month old boy that presented with an enlarged liver and was treated as hepatoblastoma with metastatic changes in the lung parenchyma after the diagnosis. The second case was a female neonate presenting with hardening on the right side of the abdomen which was treated as MRT of the liver

Atypical teratoid-rhabdoid tumor spreading along the trigeminal nerve.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to synthesize manganese ferrite (MnFe₂O₄) nanoparticles (MnF NPs) using allicin extracted from Allium sativum and to assess their bactericidal and anticancer activities. METHODS: Allicin from A. sativum was extracted using ethanol and confirmed by UV-visible spectrophotometer (λ max 240 nm). AMnF nanoparticles (Allicin-MnF NPs) synthesized via a co-precipitation route using allicin extract as reducing and stabilizing agent. The synthesized AMnF NPs were characterized using various instrumental techniques such as UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, FTIR, a

Primary malignant rhabdoid tumor of the central nervous system.

Since the initial description of malignant rhabdoid tumor (MRT) of the kidney by Beckwith in 1978, MRTs have been established as a distinct clinicopathologic entity lacking nephrogenic and myogenic differentiation. MRTs are highly aggressive neoplasms with characteristic histopathologic, immunocytochemical, and ultrastructural features. Many reports have appeared documenting primary extrarenal rhabdoid tumors (ERRTs) occurring at diverse sites, including infratentorial and supratentorial compartments of the central nervous system (CNS). The authors report 2 cases of primary CNS-MRT in young ma

Recurrent spinal atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor with pulmonary metastasis.

BACKGROUND: Atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumors (ATRT) are aggressive pediatric central nervous system malignancies that predominantly affect the brain and have poor survival outcomes. However, spinal ATRT is an uncommon subset of ATRT, and its clinical course and management are poorly understood. CASE: We describe a case of spinal ATRT in a previously healthy 5-year-old girl who initially presented with rapid-onset gait disturbance. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed an extramedullary tumor at thoracic level 5 (T5) without bony destruction or metastasis. The patient partially recovered

Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid Tumor: A Possible Oriented Female Pathology?

Atypical teratoid rhabdoid tumor is a rare lesion that occurs mainly in children can be supratentorial or infratentorial and it accounts for 1-2% of pediatric brain tumors and over 10% of central nervous system (CNS) tumors in infants, with a male preponderance up to 3 years of age, more than 50% of these occur in the cerebellum. In this report we describe four new cases of sellar AT/RTs underwent endoscopic endonasal approach and different adjuvant therapies. Our aim is to report the clinical, radiological and pathological features of these rare lesions, focusing on the possibility to perform

Primary intracranial extra-axial and supratentorial atypical rhabdoid tumor.

An atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor of the central nervous system is an aggressive infantile embryonal neoplasm, usually presenting as an infratentorial and intraparenchymatous lesion. We report on magnetic resonance imaging findings of a 22-month-old boy with a biopsy-proven primary rhabdoid tumor, presenting as a single intracranial supratentorial extra-axial mass. Based on the patient's age and imaging features (perfusion, diffusion magnetic resonance imaging, and magnetic resonance spectroscopy), a diagnosis of atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor was more accurate than diagnoses of meningioma

Rapid progression of rhabdoid components of a composite high-grade glioma and rhabdoid tumor in the occipital lobe of an adult.

We report a very unusual case of a composite high-grade glioma and rhabdoid tumor in an adult. A 22-year-old woman presented with scintillating scotoma due to a solid tumor with surrounding brain edema in the right occipital lobe. The tumor was grossly resected. Histological examinations showed that the tumor was mainly composed of INI1-positive high-grade glioma tissue containing an INI1-negative rhabdoid component. She received radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Three months after the surgery, she again complained of visual disturbances, and tumor recurrence within the resection cavity was

The role of INI1 and the SWI/SNF complex in the development of rhabdoid tumors: meeting summary from the workshop on childhood atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumors.

A workshop on childhood atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumors of the central nervous system, sponsored by the National Cancer Institute and the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation of the United States, was held on January 29, 2001 in Bethesda, Maryland. Drs. Malcolm Smith, Jaclyn Biegel, and Roger Packer hosted the meeting. There were 22 participants from 14 institutions. The sessions were designed to review what was known about the biology and clinical behavior of rhabdoid tumors and to begin to develop treatment strategies that might be effective against this clinically aggressive group of malignan

Acute-phase electroencephalography for an infantile atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor.

BACKGROUND: Primary brain tumor is a leading cause of death in cancer-bearing children. Acutely progressive patterns of electroencephalography (EEG) remain to be investigated for children with rapidly growing brain tumors. CASE REPORT: A 14-month-old boy was transferred to our department for prolonged seizures and unrecovered consciousness on his fifth day of illness. The EEG recording on admission showed highly disorganized background activity with high-voltage rhythmic delta waves. Serial EEG monitoring revealed a rapid transition of the background activity to the suppression-burst pattern,

INI1/SMARCB1-Deficient Carcinoma (Rhabdoid Tumor) of the Lacrimal Gland.

Integrase interactor 1 (INI1) is a tumor suppressor gene that is ubiquitously expressed in all nucleated cells. The loss of INI1 protein activity was first demonstrated in aggressive pediatric tumors, including atypical teratoid/rhabdoid (AT/RT) tumor of the central nervous system and malignant rhabdoid tumor of the kidney. Subsequently, INI1 deficiency was discovered in other pediatric and some adult neoplasms. The spectrum of INI1-negative tumors includes a wide variety of neoplasms that occur over a wide age range, are variably aggressive, and have a variable rhabdoid component on histopath

Primary congenital rhabdoid tumor of the brain with neoplastic hydranencephaly.

A child with shunted hydranencephaly and presumed ventriculitis was found to have a primary congenital rhabdoid tumor (RT) of the brain. The child died and a complete autopsy was carried out. The cerebral hemispheres were replaced by a single thin-walled cavity studed with tumor nodules and filled with thick, viscous fluid. The posterior fossa and visceral organs were free of tumor. This case is unique because the rhabdoid tumor was primary to the brain, it was congenital, and it massively replaced the cerebral hemispheres, causing hydranencephaly. Only three other cases of primary RT of the b

High-Grade Atypical Teratoid/Rhabdoid Tumor in the Pituitary Region.

Atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumors (AT/RTs) are embryological tumors of the central nervous system (CNS). They are typically found in children, with rare presentations in adults. We describe the presentation of an AT/RT in the pituitary region of a 37-year-old female. The patient presented with a two-week history of intractable cephalgia with sudden onset of monocular diplopia and left-sided cranial nerve VI palsy. The patient underwent transsphenoidal resection of their mass, which revealed the diagnosis. She then underwent systemic therapy with chemotherapy as well as radiation. She ultimatel

Atypical presentation of atypical teratoid rhabdoid tumor in a child.

Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid Tumor (ATRT) is a rare malignant intracranial neoplasm more commonly diagnosed in young children. The authors report the case of an 11-year-old boy with a long standing history of slowly progressive weight loss, fatigue, and weakness over 1.5 years whose magnetic resonance imaging revealed a large heterogeneous enhancing dorsally exophytic lower brainstem mass. Examination revealed extreme cachexia, gaze-evoked nystagmus, dysphagia, dysarthria, bilateral dysmetria, and global weakness without ambulation. The protracted history and neuroimaging features were most sugg

Surgical treatment of a clival-C2 atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor.

The authors present the case of en bloc resection of a clival-C2 atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor. These aggressive lesions of early childhood generally occur in the cerebellum or cerebral hemispheres. This 7-year-old boy presented with pain on turning his head and was found to have a clival-C2 mass. A metastatic workup was negative for disseminated disease. A transoral biopsy procedure revealed an atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor on histological examination. The tumor was resected via a transoral approach, and the patient's spine was stabilized with posterior instrumented fusion from the occi

Rhabdoid tumors in patients conceived following ART: is there an association?

STUDY QUESTION: In children affected by rhabdoid tumors (RT), are there clinical, therapeutic, and/or (epi-)genetic differences between those conceived following ART compared to those conceived without ART? SUMMARY ANSWER: We detected a significantly elevated female predominance, and a lower median age at diagnosis, of children with RT conceived following ART (RT_ART) as compared to other children with RT. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Anecdotal evidence suggests an association of ART with RT. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION: This was a multi-institutional retrospective survey. Children with RT conce
