Characterization and comparison of Pasteurella multocida strains associated with porcine pneumonia and atrophic rhinitis.

One hundred and fifty-eight porcine strains of Pasteurella multocida, recovered primarily from cases of pneumonic pasteurellosis or progressive atrophic rhinitis (PAR) in England and Wales, were characterized by determination of their capsular types, presence or absence of the toxA gene and molecular mass heterogeneity of the heat-modifiable (OmpA) and porin (OmpH) proteins. Eighteen groups (clones) of strains were identified on the basis of specific combinations of capsular type, toxA status and outer-membrane protein (OMP)-type. The data provided evidence that different subpopulations of P.

Contributory and exacerbating roles of gaseous ammonia and organic dust in the etiology of atrophic rhinitis.

Pigs reared commercially indoors are exposed to air heavily contaminated with particulate and gaseous pollutants. Epidemiological surveys have shown an association between the levels of these pollutants and the severity of lesions associated with the upper respiratory tract disease of swine atrophic rhinitis. This study investigated the role of aerial pollutants in the etiology of atrophic rhinitis induced by Pasteurella multocida. Forty, 1-week-old Large White piglets were weaned and divided into eight groups designated A to H. The groups were housed in Rochester exposure chambers and continu

Incidence of nasolacrimal injury and turbinectomy--associated atrophic rhinitis with Le Fort I osteotomies.

Injury to the lacrimal system can occur with trauma, craniofacial surgery, rhinoplasty and nasal antrostomy. Nasolacrimal duct injury may potentially occur with Le Fort I superior repositioning. Atrophic rhinitis is also a potential complication secondary to turbinectomy required during Le Fort I superior repositioning. A review of thirty-four cases over three years of Le Fort I osteotomies with superior repositioning found no postoperative lacrimal injury and no subsequent atrophic rhinitis associated with turbinectomy. An anatomical study relating the position of the nasolacrimal duct openin

Case Report: Nasal Myiasis in an Elderly Patient with Atrophic Rhinitis and Facial Sequelae of Leprosy.

We describe a case of nasal myiasis in an 89-year-old Brazilian patient affected by leprosy with severe nasal sequelae. An initial treatment comprising sinusectomy combined with nasal endoscopy removed more than 300 larvae, supplemented by systemic treatment using oral and topical ivermectin and levofloxacin. Infestation recurred after 2 months, was treated similarly, and resolved completely. The case could be attributed to severe nasal leprosy sequelae, with a lack of sneezing reflex, painless ulceration, atrophic rhinitis (ozena), and inability to clean the nose properly due to hand and nose

Chemosensory function assessed with psychophysical testing and event-related potentials in patients with atrophic rhinitis.

Atrophic rhinitis (AR) is a chronic inflammation of the nose characterized by an atrophy of the nasal mucosa. This is typically associated with an impaired sense of smell and a subjective sensation of poor nasal breathing. The aim of this study is to assess chemosensory function in patients suffering from AR using psychophysical testings and event-related potentials (ERP) responses. A cohort of nine patients was extensively studied. Eight out of nine had secondary AR sequela of a bilateral total inferior turbinectomy whereas one patient had a primary AR. All the patients had a clinical evaluat

[The Comparison of disease names of Atrophic Rhinitis between TCM and Western Medicine with TCM concept filiation].

Withered Nose (Bi Gao) is a modern name for dry nose drawn from classical traditional Chinese medicine texts, for the condition atrophic rhinitis. Based on these texts before the Tang Dynasty, dry nose and its relevant symptoms were not identified as a single disease. Withered Nose was recorded in the Huangdi's Inner Canon (Huangdi Neijing) and Classic of Difficult Issues (Nan Jing), but referred to external nasal desiccation due to acute heat illness, having nothing to do with atrophic rhinitis. The symptoms such as "dry nose without nasal discharge" and "dry nose " were reduced to independen

Twenty-three cases of atrophic rhinitis treated by deep puncture at three points in the nasal region.

Atrophic rhinitis is a disease which manifests itself mainly by anosmia due to dryness and atrophy of the nasal mucosa. There is no specific therapy for the disease at present. In the past few years, 23 cases of atrophic rhinitis were treated mainly by deep puncture at three points in the nasal region with satisfactory results. In order to find out the functional changes of the nasal mucosa, the mucociliary transport rate (MTR), surface temperature of the conchal mucosa, acid-base scale of nasal secretion, and volume of nasal secretion were determined before and after the treatment.

Characterization and comparison of strains of Pasteurella multocida associated with cases of progressive atrophic rhinitis and porcine pneumonia in Argentina.

BACKGROUND: Pasteurella multocida (Pm) is the causative agent of progressive atrophic rhinitis (PAR) and pneumonic pasteurellosis (PN) in pigs. Pm is a member of the porcine respiratory complex responsible for important economic loss in the pig industry. AIM: This study aimed to characterize the Pm strains recovered from clinical cases of PN and PAR and to elucidate the antibiotic susceptibility profiles of the strains. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty strains were characterized molecularly by polymerase chain reaction to determine species-specific gene, capsular type (A or D), and toxin A produ

Acute Exacerbation of Chronic Rhinosinusitis (AECRS) with Orbital Complications in an Atrophic Rhinitis Patient: A Mere Co-incidence?

Recurrent Acute Exacerbations of Chronic Rhinosinusitis (AECRS) in a setting of atrophic rhinitis are perplexing clinical situations. While either may act as the primary factor, repeated inflammation in a vessel-poor atrophied tissue is unusual. Progressive mucosal degeneration, vascularity and the effect of bacterial colonization are the factors suggested to play an important role for the pathobiogenesis of the co-existence of the two diseases. Through presentation of a case, a brief attempt has been made here to explore the temporal relationship between rhinosinusitis and atrophic rhinitis;

Atrophic rhinitis in swine fattener herds. A field study of the spread of the disease with infected pigs bought at market.

In three different fattener herds pigs primarily AR infected as baby piglets were mixed in the fattening units with healthy pigs at an age of 11--13 weeks. Snout alterations were registered on cut snouts at a slaughter weight of about 70 kg. Severe AR was registered in the groups of primarily infected pigs (Tables I--III). The incidence of snout alterations was lower in the groups of pigs infected at an age of 11--13 weeks, but was much higher than in the groups of healthy control pigs or in the normal pig population in the region (Table IV). The results indicate that pigs infected at a rather

Generation of an attenuated Salmonella-delivery strains expressing adhesin and toxin antigens for progressive atrophic rhinitis, and evaluation of its immune responses in a murine model.

An expression/secretion plasmid containing genes encoding the FimA, CP39, PtfA, ToxA and F1P2 antigens associated with porcine pneumonic pasteurellosis and progressive atrophic rhinitis (PAR) was constructed and harbored in an attenuated Salmonella Typhimurium, which was used as the vaccine candidate. The immune responses induced by this delivery strain were investigated in a murine model. Each antigen secreted from the delivery strain was confirmed by Western blot analysis. Thirty BALB/c mice were divided equally into two groups; group A were intranasally inoculated with the mixture of the fi

Demonstration that Australian Pasteurella multocida isolates from sporadic outbreaks of porcine pneumonia are non-toxigenic (toxA-) and display heterogeneous DNA restriction endonuclease profiles compared with toxigenic isolates from herds with progressive atrophic rhinitis.

Capsular types A and D of Pasteurella multocida cause economic losses in swine because of their association with progressive atrophic rhinitis (PAR) and enzootic pneumonia. There have been no studies comparing whole-cell DNA profiles of isolates associated with these two porcine respiratory diseases. Twenty-two isolates of P. multocida from diseased pigs in different geographic localities within Australia were characterised genotypically by restriction endonuclease analysis (REA) with the enzyme CfoI. Seven of 12 P. multocida isolates from nasal swabs from pigs in herds where PAR was either pr

Clinicocytological correlation in establishing the aetiology of chronic rhinitis.

Two hundred patients clinically diagnosed as having chronic rhinitis were provisionally grouped into allergic and non-allergic types of rhinitis on the basis of history, clinical examination, X-ray of the paranasal sinuses using the occipitomental view and other relevant investigations like differential and total leucocyte count. Whereas 158 cases were categorized into allergic rhinitis, 13 were diagnosed as suffering from vasomotor rhinitis, 25 from infective rhinitis and 4 patients from atrophic rhinitis. A nasal cytogram performed in all these cases showed allergic rhinitis in 107 cases, va

Balanced physiological saline in the treatment of chronic rhinitis.

The effects of a special balanced physiological saline on nasal symptoms of 93 patients with chronic rhinitis were studied. The main diagnoses of the patients were allergic rhinitis, atrophic rhinitis and ozaena, rhinitis sicca, chronic sinusitis, nasal polyposis and postoperative condition after nasal surgery. The tested solution was administered by a simple metered dose pump. 85 (91%) of the patients reported beneficial effects of the tested solution on nasal symptoms. In addition, 22 (71%) of those patients who used continuous anti-allergic medication, mainly intranasal steroids, reported t

Other causes of rhinitis: mixed rhinitis, rhinitis medicamentosa, hormonal rhinitis, rhinitis of the elderly, and gustatory rhinitis.

It is important to consider a comprehensive differential of possible rhinitis types when considering the diagnosis of chronic rhinitis, including at least 9 subtypes of nonallergic rhinitis: drug-induced rhinitis, gustatory rhinitis, hormonal-induced rhinitis, infectious rhinitis, nonallergic rhinitis with eosinophilia syndrome, occupational rhinitis, senile rhinitis, atrophic rhinitis, and nonallergic rhinopathy. This article focuses on some of the most common types of chronic rhinitis, including mixed rhinitis (allergic and nonallergic overlap), rhinitis medicamentosa, hormonal rhinitis, rhi

[Rhinitis].

Acute rhinitis is an acute inflammatory disease affecting nasal mucous membranes, most frequently caused by viral infections. Complications include secondary bacterial invasion. Treatment is mainly symptomatic. Antibiotics should be prescribed only when significant bacterial infection is demonstrated. Local vasoactive drugs should not be used but occasionally their oral administration can be effective. Hypertrophic and atrophic forms may be differentiated among chronic rhinitis. Hypertrophic forms include congestive, hiperplastic and allergic lesions of nasal and sinus mucous membranes. Allerg

Effect of ascariasis and respiratory diseases on growth rates in swine.

Growth rates, measures of ascarid burden, and the levels of anteroventral pneumonia and atrophic rhinitis at slaughter were determined for 352 hogs born between March 8 and March 28, 1987 on 15 farms located in Prince Edward Island. Regression analyses were used to determine associations between average daily gain (ADG) and independent variables controlling for sex, farm, and litters nested within farm. The regression model accounted for 75.4% of the variation in ADG. The number of intestinal ascarids at slaughter did not affect ADG. However, the "life-time burden" (a composite measure based o
