The aim of this study was to compare rhinomanometric results with patient's assessment of nasal patency, frequency of sneezing, nasal secretion, and results of anterior rhinoscopy, 34 patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis were examined. Correlations of medium degree were found between the rhinomanometric results and both the patient's assessment of nasal patency and the results of anterior rhinoscopy. No correlations were found between rhinomanometric results and either sneezing or nasal secretion. This might suggest that values measured by rhinomanometry are not closely enough connected wi

In order to assess how effective a combination of diagnostic methods, each addressing specific aetiopathogenic aspects, would be in uncovering the cause of common chronic nasal obstruction, we evaluated 45 consecutive adult subjects. They were submitted to rhinomanometry testing, sinus CT-scans and RASTs to prevalent allergens. Most, but not all, patients ended up showing abnormal results in at least one of the diagnostic procedures. Sinus pathology was, by far, the most frequent diagnosis, while allergy took second place, with a number of atopic subjects displaying sinusitis as well. On the o

The Authors report their experience regarding Positional Active Rhinomanometry performed before and after surgery in hypertrophic-vasomotor chronic rhinitis. Twenty-five patients suffering of hypertrophy of the turbinates and/or nasal vasomotor disorders were examined pre-operatively and 3, 6 and 12 months after inferior submucosal turbinoplasty. Tests were performed in the seated, supina, homolateral and contralateral positions with regard to the fossa in question. Values were compared with those of forty normal subjects. Pre-operative examinations showed a large number of paradoxical respons

In this study, we aimed to investigate the influences of age and gender on nasal airway patency, as measured by both active anterior rhinomanometry (AAR) and acoustic rhinometry (AR). The nasal airway patency of healthy subjects was evaluated using AAR and AR. In AAR, the subjects generated airflow actively through inspiration and expiration in repetitions of 10, while nasal patency was measured at an inspiratory and expiratory reference pressure of 75 Pa. In AR, we assessed the geometry of the nasal cavity through the analysis of sound waves reflected from the nasal cavities in order to measu

OBJECTIVES: Investigate the implications of Congenital Nasal Pyriform Aperture Stenosis (CNPAS) on neonatal nasal airflow through computational fluid dynamics (CFD), create a virtual rhinomanometry, and simulate the prospective outcomes post-virtual surgical intervention.
METHODS: CT scanning of a neonate diagnosed with CNPAS and a control model were used to execute CFD simulations. The segmentation file of the CNPAS underwent manual modifications to simulate a virtual surgical procedure, resulting in a geometry that mirrors a post-operatively corrected patient. Virtual rhinomanometry was rec

OBJECTIVES: Anterior active rhinomanometry (AAR) is widely used in Swedish routine clinical practice to decide if septoplasty is necessary. The scientific basis for the method needs to be strengthened. Therefore, the aims were to evaluate nasal airway resistance (NAR), paradoxical reactions to pharmacological decongestion, and test-retest characteristics of the Rhino-Comp® AAR in healthy subjects.
METHODS: A prospective longitudinal design was used. AAR was performed before and after decongestion at baseline and after ≥6 months on 60 healthy volunteers. The relationships between NAR, height,

AIM: The aim of the study was to compare the flow disturbances in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique based on computed tomography (CT) to the results of active anterior rhinomanometry (RMM), in patients with nasal septum deviation (NSD).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In 24 patients with NSD, RMM and CT of the paranasal sinuses were performed as a part of typical clinical management. For each patient, 3D models of air-filled spaces in the nasal cavity were created, based on CT images, and air flow simulations during inhalation were performed using CFD technique. Correlations between RMM, bot

BACKGROUND: Rhinoplasty is a critical surgical intervention aimed at enhancing nasal form and function. However, traditional approaches often compromise the integrity of nasal scroll ligaments, vital for the functionality of the internal nasal valve, leading to potential postoperative nasal dysfunction. Despite the importance of scroll ligaments in maintaining nasal structure and function, the literature lacks objective, quantifiable evidence of their role. This study sought to objectively compare nasal functionality and anatomy between patients undergoing rhinoplasty with bilateral preservati

Infection of the anterior ethmoids and recessus frontalis causes swelling of the mucosa and obstruction of the nasofrontal duct, impairing the drainage of the frontal sinus. During the healing process the obstruction diminishes gradually. Prolongation of this process can lead to chronic infection of the nasofrontal region causing recurrent or chronic frontal sinusitis. In our everyday work we need a simple and reliable method to evaluate the patency of the nasofrontal duct, in order to be able to assess the recovery and to find those patients whose disease tends to become chronic. For this pur

Thirty-one patients suffering from acute frontal sinusitis were treated by trephination. The patency of the nasofrontal duct was measured daily via the ventilation tube by computerized rhinomanometry until the tube was removed. According to the air flow changes inside the frontal sinus during normal nasal breathing, the duct was assessed as open, partially open or obstructed. The further healing process was assessed by clinical and radiological examination during a two-month postoperative follow-up. Statistical analysis of the results shows that both the favourable healing process and recurren

BACKGROUND: Dorsal preservation techniques have been preferred and gained popularity in recent years. The current study compares the effects of dorsal preservation and dorsal reduction rhinoplasty on nasal patency and aesthetic outcomes by using Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) and rhinomanometry. To our knowledge, this is the first study to compare dorsal preservation and dorsal reduction techniques with rhinomanometry.
METHODS: This is a prospective study of 34 patients who underwent rhinoplasty between January 2021-June 2022. The patients were randomly selected preoperatively and

BACKGROUND: A fexofenadine/pseudoephedrine combination tablet (F/P) is an optimal product for nasal obstruction. It contains fexofenadine hydrochloride, a histamine H1-receptor antagonist for sneezing and rhinorrhea and pseudoephedrine hydrochloride, an α-adrenergic agonist. The effect of an antihistamine-decongestant on nasal obstruction has been demonstrated in previous studies, but onset of action and efficacy data on nasal obstruction are limited.
OBJECTIVE: We estimated the efficacy of F/P on nasal obstruction in patients with house dust mite-induced allergic rhinitis (AR) versus fexofen

BACKGROUND: Atopic bronchial asthma (BA) in children is associated with upper airways pathology (UAP). Among them, a combination of allergic rhinitis (AR) and nasal obstructive disorders (NOD), including hypertrophy of the pharyngeal tonsil (HPT) and anomalies of the intranasal structures (AINS), is abundant. In such patients, anterior active rhinomanometry (AARM) is an important method of examining nasal patency. However, NOD can influence the AARM parameters in children with BA and nasal symptoms, and this effect must be taken into account in clinical practice. Study goal was to elucidate th

Nasal response to a large number of stimuli is almost invariably the same, with sneezing, watery rhinorrhoea and nasal obstruction constituting the three major conventional symptoms of the so-called vasomotor (autonomic) rhinitis. These symptoms are not specific to allergic reactions but can be seen in viral infections, sudden changes in temperature, inhalation of irritant fumes or of certain smells. The aetiological diagnosis of vasomotor rhinitis therefore is sometimes very difficult but seems to be greatly facilitated by intranasal challenge tests associated with anterior rhinomanometry.
