Alkaline phosphatase activity was localised in specific groups of cellular processes, nuclei and fibre tracts in fetal mouse brain at 9.5-17.5 days post coitum. A radial band of intense enzymatic activity extended longitudinally within the rhombencephalon at 10.5 to 15.5 days. This enzymatic band was topographically related to the efferent nuclei of the cranial nerves, except those nuclei which had migrated laterally to their final positions. The enzymatic activity was seen in some but not all silver-impregnated fibre tracts that appeared early in development, but such association disappeared

BACKGROUND: Intrauterine infection with the Zika virus (ZIKV) has been connected to severe brain malformations, microcephaly, and abnormal electrophysiological activity.
METHODS: We describe the interictal electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings of 47 children born with ZIKV-derived microcephaly. EEGs were recorded in the first year of life and correlated with brain morphology. In 31 subjects, we tested the association between computed tomography (CT) findings and interictal epileptiform discharges (IED). In eighteen, CTs were used for correlating volumetric measurements of the brainstem, ce

Recent studies of the heads of vertebrates have shown a primitive pattern of segmentation in the mesoderm and neural plate not previously recognized. The role of this pattern in the subsequent distribution of cranial crest and the development of branchial arches and cranial nerves, may resolve century-old arguments about the evolution of vertebrate segmentation. In this study, we examine the early embryonic development of the cranium of a primitive amniote, the snapping turtle, with the SEM. We show that the paraxial mesoderm cranial to the first-formed somites is segmented and that this patte

A specificity of the vertebrobasilar system (VBS) is a convergent junction of paired vertebral arteries (VAs) in the basilar artery (BA) usually at the level of bulbopontine sulcus on the ventral side of the rhombencephalon. We revealed multiple VBS variations (a high junction of both VAs, absence of posterior inferior cerebellar arteries, short and ectatic BA, hypoplasia and initial duplication of the left anterior inferior cerebellar artery, and bilateral common trunks of the posterior cerebral and superior cerebellar arteries) in a 52-year-old male that routinely autopsied at the Institute

This study provides a detailed description of the anatomical defects in the Hoxa-1-/- mutant mice previously generated in our laboratory (T. Lufkin, A. Dierich, M. LeMeur, M. Mark and P. Chambon, 1991; Cell 66, 1105-1119). Three-dimensional reconstructions of the Hoxa-1-/- rhombencephalon reveals that it bears only five rhombomeric structures (ie. morphological segments) instead of the normal seven. The first three of these rhombomeres appear normal as judged from the distribution pattern of CRABPI transcripts in the neurectoderm and from the histological analysis of the cranial nerve componen

Dengue infection is gradually disseminating throughout the world in alarming proportions. It is a arbovirus infection, transmitted by aedes mosquitoes. It is a multi-systemic disorder associated with varied neurological complications. There is increased trend of development of neurological complications in dengue fever. The neurological complications arising due to dengue infection can be categorized into central and neuromuscular complications. The central nervous system disorders reported with dengue fever are encephalopathy, encephalitis and myelitis. Here we report a case of rhombencephalitis

Tracer substances were injected into the basal telencephalic areas c and d of the turtle brain. These areas (Acd) have recently been shown to be connected reciprocally with the dorsal spino-medullary region, though the particular subregions involved in these projections remained unclear. We demonstrated that the efferent projections of area d terminate predominantly within or immediately adjacent to the trigeminal nuclear complex and in the high cervical spinal gray. The dendritic domain of the vagus-solitarius complex and the dorsal column nuclear complex might also receive some basal telence

The 90 kDa ribosomal S6 serine/threonine kinase 2 gene (RSK2, U08316) has been recently identified as a disease-causing gene in an X-linked disorder, the Coffin-Lowry Syndrome (MIM 303600) characterized by severe mental retardation, facial dysmorphisms and progressive skeletal malformations. To investigate its possible role in cerebral cortex development, we performed RNA in situ hybridization at three stages of human development: day 32 (Carnegie 15), 9 weeks (Carnegie 23) and 13 weeks. RSK2 expression is detected in the embryonic anterior and posterior telencephalon (hippocampus anlagen), me

This report documents the hospital course and autopsy findings of a 43-year-old man with a renal allograft who died of West Nile virus (WNV) encephalitis. Central nervous system (CNS) findings were those of severe necrotizing and hemorrhagic encephalitis affecting gray matter regions limited to the diencepahlon, rhombencephalon, spinal cord, and limbic system. The bilateral process exhibited preferential involvement of motor neurons. Brain imaging obtained 6 days before death demonstrated an unusual pattern of involvement corresponding with the autopsy findings, confirming that imaging may be

An antibody against the 442 carboxy-terminal amino acids of the BK channel alpha-subunit detects high immunoreactivity within the telencephalon in cerebral cortices, olfactory bulb, basal ganglia and hippocampus, while lower levels are found in basal forebrain regions and amygdala. Within the diencephalon, high density was found in nuclei of the ventral and dorsal thalamus and the medial habenular nucleus, and low density in the hypothalamus. The fasciculus retroflexus and its termination in the mesencephalic interpeduncular nucleus are prominently stained. Other mesencephalic expression sites

FMRFamide-immunoreactive neurons were determined immunocytochemically by means of the PAP-technique for unlabeled antibodies. FMRFamide-containing perikarya were found in the frontoventral telencephalon, in the valvula and corpus cerebelli, and in the rostral and caudal medulla oblongata. FMRFamide immunoreactive cells were localized in the anterio lobe of the pituitary. FMRFamide fibres occurred in the bulbus olfactorius, in the anterior, medial and lateral parts of the telencephalon, in the commissura anterior, beneath the nucleus praeopticus, beneath the nucleus dorsomedialis, ventrolis and

The distribution of serotonin (5-HT)-containing perikarya, fibers and terminals in the brain of the pigeon (Columba livia) was investigated, using immunohistochemical and immunofluorescence methods combined with retrograde axonal transport. Twenty-one different groups of 5-HT immunoreactive (IR) cells were identified, 2 of which were localized at the hypothalamic level (periventricular organ, infundibular recess) and 19 at the tegmental-mesencephalic and rhombencephalic levels. Ten of the cell groups were situated within the region of the midline from the isthmic to the posterior rhombencephal

Volumes of brain and brain subdivisions in greylag and domestic geese are determined by cytoarchitectonical methods in order to confirm the reduction in brain weight of 16.13% due to domestication which was described in an earlier study. Olfactory structures, nucleus basalis and the 'piriform' corticoid layer are found to be particular different in shape and position compared to other birds, especially the pigeon. The volumes of brain parts in relation to the total brain are very similar in both: greylag geese and domestic geese. The extent of changes in brain parts due to domestication varies

A female infant, weighing 2,263 g had been spontaneously delivered at the 33rd week of gestation. The only noticeable abnormality was a cleft palate, but within the next few days, she developed low temperature, spastic movements in the extremities, and depressed respiration. These abnormalities soon became worse and she died on the 12th day. Clinically, she was not suspected of having malformations of the brain, but on autopsy, an external hydrocephaly (400 ml) and small arhinencephalic brain (75 g) were noted. In the brain, the growth of the diencephalon was exceedingly poor but the growth of

Migration of cranial neural crest cells is a crucial event in the formation of facial organs such as the frontonasal mass and branchial arches. However, the source of the populating crest cells that occupy the frontonasal mass remains unclear in mammalian embryos. To elucidate this, we performed focal DiI injections at various sites in the prosencephalon (forebrain, including the future telencephalon and diencephalon), mesencephalon (midbrain), and the anterior part of the rhombencephalon (hindbrain) separated posteriorly by the preotic sulus (i.e., rhombomere A; future rhombomere 1 and 2) of

Supramedullary neurons (SMNs) are located on the dorsal surface of the hindbrain and spinal cord in many adults of teleost fishes. Comparative morphological studies have revealed differences in SMN size, number and distribution among fishes. However, little information exists on the projection patterns of SMN neurites within the central nervous system. We focus on a single species of adult teleost fish, the cunner, Tautogolabrus adspersus, a fish that has 25-46 SMN somata aligned dorsally along the midline in the hindbrain and rostral third of the spinal cord.
