Predictors of intention to change HIV sexual and injection risk behaviors among heterosexual methamphetamine-using offenders in drug treatment: a test of the AIDS Risk Reduction Model.

This study tested components of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) Risk Reduction Model (ARRM) for a sample of methamphetamine-using offenders in drug treatment. Analyses included the first two stages of the ARRM, problem recognition and intention to reduce risk (potential precursors to later possible behavior change), assessing predictors of intentions to increase condom use, reduce other sexual risk, and disinfect needles. Path analysis results showed potential applicability of the ARRM as a basis for intervention development for this population. There was a consistent effect of s

Network-level HIV risk norms are associated with individual-level HIV risk and harm reduction behaviors among people who inject drugs: a latent profile analysis.

The COVID-19 related U.S.-Mexico border-crossing restrictions disrupted social networks and HIV harm reduction services among people who inject drugs (PWID) in San Diego and Tijuana. We assessed associations of descriptive network norms on PWID's HIV vulnerability during this period. Between 10/2020 and 10/2021, 399 PWID completed a behavioral and egocentric questionnaire. We used Latent Profile Analysis to categorize PWID into network norm risk profiles based on proportions of their network (n = 924 drug use alters) who injected drugs and engaged in cross-border drug use (CBDU), among other v

A Contextual Comparison of Risk Behaviors Among Older Adult Drug Users and Harm Reduction in Suburban Versus Inner-City Social Environments.

Recent epidemiological data show that older adults comprise a growing age group of drug users and new AIDS cases in the United States. Prevention and intervention studies show that risk behaviors leading to HIV infection are increasing among older users, particularly among the socially vulnerable. Yet older adults remain an under-researched population of drug users and little is known about their risk behaviors. Our aim is to address this gap in knowledge on older users by comparing contextual factors that influence risk behaviors and harm reduction strategies practiced by older drug users liv

Linking Reductions in Alcohol and Birth Control Use Risk Behavior to Prevention of Alcohol-Exposed Pregnancy: A Population-Level Simulation of Preconceptual Prevention Programs.

BACKGROUND: The most popular alcohol-exposed pregnancy (AEP) prevention program (AEP-P) is a brief intervention that dually promotes reducing alcohol use and increasing birth control use. The primary outcome variable used to evaluate AEP-P involves aggregating behavioral change into a binary variable, despite differences in how AEP-P impacts each behavior. This study examined if all three possible AEP-P behavior-change outcomes (alcohol only (AO), birth control only (BCO), or both behaviors [BB]) are equally effective in preventing subsequent AEP itself. METHODS: We simulated implementing an

Development of risk reduction behavioral counseling for Ebola virus disease survivors enrolled in the Sierra Leone Ebola Virus Persistence Study, 2015-2016.

BACKGROUND: During the 2014-2016 West Africa Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) epidemic, the public health community had concerns that sexual transmission of the Ebola virus (EBOV) from EVD survivors was a risk, due to EBOV persistence in body fluids of EVD survivors, particularly semen. The Sierra Leone Ebola Virus Persistence Study was initiated to investigate this risk by assessing EBOV persistence in numerous body fluids of EVD survivors and providing risk reduction counseling based on test results for semen, vaginal fluid, menstrual blood, urine, rectal fluid, sweat, tears, saliva, and breast mil

Reduction in risk-taking behaviors among MSM in Senegal between 2004 and 2007 and prevalence of HIV and other STIs. ELIHoS Project, ANRS 12139.

An epidemiological survey conducted in Senegal in 2004 among men having sex with men (MSM) revealed high HIV prevalence and a high rate of risky behaviors within this population. Consequently, several prevention campaigns targeting MSM were implemented. A second survey was carried out in 2007 to assess the impact of these measures. This paper aims to examine trends in HIV and STI prevalence and in sexual behaviors between 2004 and 2007. The two surveys were conducted in four urban sites among 440 and 501 MSM--recruited using the snowball sampling method--in 2004 and 2007, respectively. A simil

Conceptualization of sexual partner relationship steadiness among ethnic minority adolescent women: implications for evidence-based behavioral sexual risk reduction interventions.

Cognitive behavioral interventions for sexual risk reduction have been less successful among ethnic minority adolescent women with histories of abuse and sexually transmitted infections (STI) than among other adolescent populations. African American and Mexican American adolescent women (ages 14-18 years, n = 548) self-reported sexual partner relationship steadiness and sexual risk behaviors via semi-structured interviews at study entry. Descriptive and bivariate analyses compared sexual risk behaviors by sexual partner relationship steadiness. Steady and unsteady relationships were conceptual

The effectiveness of individual-, group-, and community-level HIV behavioral risk-reduction interventions for adult men who have sex with men: a systematic review.

This article presents the results of a systematic review of the effectiveness and economic efficiency of individual-, group-, and community-level behavioral interventions intended to reduce the risk of acquiring sexually transmitted HIV in adult men who have sex with men (MSM). These results form the basis for recommendations by the Task Force on Community Preventive Services on the use of these interventions. Sexual risk behavior and condom use were the outcomes used to assess effectiveness. Intervention effectiveness on biological outcomes could not be assessed because too few studies of ade

A pilot trial of integrated behavioral activation and sexual risk reduction counseling for HIV-uninfected men who have sex with men abusing crystal methamphetamine.

Crystal methamphetamine use is a major driver behind high-risk sexual behavior among men who have sex with men (MSM). Prior work suggests a cycle of continued crystal methamphetamine use and high-risk sex due to loss of the ability to enjoy other activities, which appears to be a side effect of this drug. Behavioral activation (BA) is a treatment for depression that involves learning to reengage in life's activities. We evaluated a novel intervention for crystal methamphetamine abuse and high-risk sex in MSM, incorporating 10 sessions of BA with integrated HIV risk reduction counseling (RR). F

A Treatment Mobile App for Sexual Minority Men Who Use Methamphetamine Demonstrates Reductions in Methamphetamine Use and HIV Sexual Risk Behaviors: Getting Off.

Sexual minority men (SMM) have elevated rates of methamphetamine use, which is deeply integrated into their sexual identities, sexual behaviors, and cultural spaces. Smartphone applications (apps) are often used to procure drugs and sexual partners. This study was a randomized clinical trial that evaluated the efficacy of the adaptation of an evidence-based intervention (Getting Off) into a mobile app format. From May 2021 to May 2023, 226 SMM who self-reported methamphetamine use in the past year were randomized to immediate delivery (ID) of the Getting Off app (n = 113) or a 30-day delayed d

Efficacy of a Just-in-Time Adaptive Intervention to Promote HIV Risk Reduction Behaviors Among Young Adults Experiencing Homelessness: Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: People experiencing homelessness have higher rates of HIV than those who are stably housed. Mental health needs, substance use problems, and issues unique to homelessness such as lack of shelter and transiency need to be considered with regard to HIV prevention. To date, HIV prevention interventions for young adults experiencing homelessness have not specifically addressed modifiable real-time factors such as stress, sexual or drug use urge, or substance use, or been delivered at the time of heightened risk. Real-time, personalized HIV prevention messages may reduce HIV risk behavi

Exploring the Impact of Reduction in Methamphetamine Use on Sexual Risk Behaviors Among Men Who Have Sex with Men and Women: Findings from the ADAPT- 2 Trial.

BACKGROUND: Methamphetamine (MA) use has been linked to engaging in sexual risk behaviors (SRBs) that are associated with HIV/STIs, particularly among men who have sex with men (MSM) and men who have sex with men and women (MSMW; hereafter MSM/W). The objectives of this analysis were to determine whether reduced MA is associated with decreases in SRBs in a sample of MSM/W. METHOD: Data came from the ADAPT- 2 trial, a randomized, double-blind, two-stage sequential parallel design trial evaluating extended-release injectable naltrexone (NTX) and oral bupropion (BUP) vs. placebo for MA use disor

How has the COVID-19 epidemic affected the risk behaviors of people who inject drugs in a city with high harm reduction service coverage in Vietnam? A qualitative investigation.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 outbreak disproportionally affects vulnerable populations including people who inject drugs (PWID). Social distancing and stay-at-home orders might result in a lack of access to medical and social services, poorer mental health, and financial precariousness, and thus, increases in HIV and HCV risk behaviors. This article explores how the HIV/HCV risk behaviors of PWID in Haiphong, a city with high harm reduction service coverage in Vietnam, changed during the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, and what shaped such changes, using the risk environment framework. Rationale and design of an integrated bio-behavioral approach to improve adherence to pre-exposure prophylaxis and HIV risk reduction among opioid-dependent people who use drugs: The CHRP-BB study.

BACKGROUND: Few primary HIV prevention strategies have successfully integrated both behavioral and biomedical components, with modest HIV risk reduction outcomes among opioid-dependent people who use drugs (PWUD). In response to this unmet need, we developed a brief, bio-behavioral intervention to simultaneously promote PrEP adherence and reduce HIV risk among opioid-dependent PWUD. METHODS: Using a Hybrid Type I implementation science design, we will examine the efficacy of the integrated bio-behavioral, Community-friendly Health Recovery Program (CHRP-BB) compared to a time-and-attention ma

Pathways of ecosystem-based disaster risk reduction: A global review of empirical evidence.

Ecosystems provide valuable services in reducing the risks of disasters through various pathways, which are increasingly recognized as sustainable strategies for disaster management. However, there remains limited information on the underlying ecological processes of risk reduction. This paper addresses this gap by synthesizing ecological mechanisms and evaluating the 'level of evidence' and 'scale of use' through a review of 64 peer-reviewed research articles published between 2015 to 2022. These research articles covered nine types of disasters, predominantly floods (42.19 %), followed by ur
