Follistatin overexpression in rodent liver tumors: a possible mechanism to overcome activin growth control.

The activin-follistatin system is a potent growth regulatory system of liver tissue homeostasis. Activin A inhibits hepatocellular DNA synthesis and induces cell death. Follistatin binds activin and sequesters it from the signaling pathway. Consistently, follistatin has been reported to act as an inducer of DNA synthesis in the liver. Using RNase protection analysis, we studied the expression of follistatin in rat and mouse liver tumors as a possible mechanism to overcome activin growth control. Approximately 40% of the tumors (nine of 24 each), most of them hepatocellular carcinomas, displaye

Evaluation of rodent bait containing imidacloprid for the control of fleas on commensal rodents in a plague-endemic region of northwest Uganda.

In recent decades, the majority of human plague cases (caused by Yersinia pestis) have been reported from Africa. In an effort to reduce the risk of the disease in this area, we evaluated the efficacy of a host-targeted rodent bait containing the insecticide imidacloprid for controlling fleas on house-dwelling commensal rodents in a plague-endemic region of northwestern Uganda. Results demonstrated that the use of a palatable, rodent-targeted, wax-based bait cube was effective at reducing the prevalence of fleas on commensal rodents and flea burdens on these animals at day 7 postbait exposure,

Rodent control to fight plague: field assessment of methods based on rat density reduction.

Rodents represent a serious threat to food security and public health. The extent to which rodent control can mitigate the risk from rodent-borne disease depends on both the effectiveness of control in reducing rodent abundance and the impact on disease epidemiology. Focusing on a plague-endemic region of Madagascar, this study compared the effectiveness of 3 methods: live-traps, snap-traps, and rodenticides. Control interventions were implemented inside houses between May and October 2019. Tracking tiles monitored rodent abundance. Rodent fleas, the vector involved in plague transmission, wer

Exposure of non-target small mammals to anticoagulant rodenticide during chemical rodent control operations.

The extensive use of anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) results in widespread unintentional exposure of non-target rodents and secondary poisoning of predators despite regulatory measures to manage and reduce exposure risk. To elucidate on the potential vectoring of ARs into surrounding habitats by non-target small mammals, we determined bromadiolone prevalence and concentrations in rodents and shrews near bait boxes during an experimental application of the poison for 2 weeks. Overall, bromadiolone was detected in 12.6% of all small rodents and insectivores. Less than 20 m from bait boxes, 48.6

Poison-based commensal rodent control strategies in urban ecosystems: some evidence against sewer-baiting.

Sewers are historically considered the main reservoir for commensal rodents, posing threats to urban ecosystem health. Aboveground rodent signs are often assumed to give clues to high sewer infestation, which can chronically restock surface areas. Thus, current sewer-baiting programmes are mostly reactive, responding to increased surface infestation. Conversely, proactive sewer-baiting (regardless of infestation levels) is often disregarded because cost-effectiveness is not always addressed. We explored the extent to which the surface infestation is related to rodent feeding activity on sewer

[Rodent control: review of rodenticides registered in the field of environmental health in Spain].

The use of what are known as "rodenticides", defined as biocides used for rodent control, is currently required. In the recent transposition of the Biocide Directive by way of Royal Decree 1054/2002, rodenticides are included under Main Group 3, Product Type 14. The current status of rodenticides in the Official Pesticide Registry is analyzed. This study has been conducted based on the data in the database of the Spain's Official Registry of Pesticides for Use in Public Health for rodenticides (technical and formulated active ingredients). Nine (9) of the technical active ingredients registere

Field efficacy of deltamethrin for rodent flea control in San Bernardino County, California, USA.

A study was conducted to determine the initial and residual activity of deltamethrin (0.05% dust) applied to rodent burrows (at approximately 14 g/burrow) against fleas in the Silverwood Lake area of San Bernardino County. In initial toxicity (2-d post-treatment), deltamethrin provided 97% flea control and in residual toxicity it resulted in 68% control of the rodent fleas at 15-d post-treatment. The flea fauna consisted of Oropsylla montana (89.9%) and Hoplopsylls anomalus (10.1%). All rodents captured in this study were California ground squirrels, Spermophilus beecheyi. A boric acid-rodenticide mixture used in the control of coexisting rodent-cockroach infestations.

Rodent bait combined with a commercially available boric acid compound was found in laboratory experiments to be completely effective in eliminating American cockroaches given the mixture as a food source. The presence of boric acid compound did not interfere with the rodenticidal capacity of the rodent bait.

Rodent control on the front line: knowledge and practices of pest controllers on the use of anticoagulant rodenticides.

BACKGROUND: Synanthropic rodents are globally perceived as pests because of their adaptability to anthropogenic environments, and result in significant challenges to food and health security. Rodent control with anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) has been widely implemented to minimize economic losses, despite concerns about the impacts of ARs. This study aims to evaluate AR use and knowledge among pest management professionals (PMPs). Using an online survey, we aimed to: (i) assess PMPs' training; (ii) identify commonly used control methods; (iii) evaluate dependency on ARs; and (iv) evaluate P

The status of fertility control for rodents-recent achievements and future directions.

Management of overabundant rodents at a landscape scale is complex but often required to sustainably reduce rodent abundance below damage thresholds. Current conventional techniques such as poisoning are not species specific, with some approaches becoming increasingly unacceptable to the general public. Fertility control, first proposed for vertebrate pest management over 5 decades ago, has gained public acceptance because it is perceived as a potentially more species-specific and humane approach compared with many lethal methods. An ideal fertility control agent needs to induce infertility ac

Dilemmas in the Management of Liminal Rodents-Attitudes of Dutch Pest Controllers.

When non-human animals are labeled as 'pests', their moral status and welfare seem relatively unimportant. In a multi-stakeholder project, we develop an assessment frame for a more responsible rodent management that includes animal welfare. An online survey among 129 Dutch pest controllers was carried out in order to find out more about pest controllers' attitudes about animal welfare. Respondents indicate to consider animal welfare in their job. They see differences in the welfare impact of different rodent control methods. A dilemma may occur when methods with a high impact, such as rodentic

Spectral analyses of cardiovascular control in rodents with spinal cord injury.

The severity of injury to cardiovascular autonomic pathways following clinical spinal cord injury (SCI) can be evaluated with spectral analyses. Whether this technique provides a translatable assessment of cardiovascular autonomic function in rodent SCI is unknown. Beat-to-beat blood pressure and pulse interval were measured in male rats 1 month after complete T3 or T10 SCI, and in uninjured control animals. Univariate autoregressive spectral analyses were performed and the power of the low frequency (LF), high frequency (HF), and very low frequency (VLF) peaks identified. Frequency domain var

Immunological control of chronic Trypanosoma brucei gambiense in outbred rodents.

Recent human isolates of Trypanosoma brucei gambiense generally fail to become or remain patent in laboratory rodents. The purpose of this study was to determine if this was due to acquired immunity and if so which immunosuppressive method was the most efficient in raising parasitemia levels. Prior to infection, rats and mice were immunosuppressed by treatments with cobra venom factor, anti-lymphocyte sera, hydrocortisone acetate, cyclophosphamide; by splenectomy; or by lethal X-irradiation. While no parasites were detected in the blood of most of the untreated rodents for 30 days postinfectio

Auditory processing control by the medial prefrontal cortex: A review of the rodent functional organisation.

Afferent inputs from the cochlea transmit auditory information to the central nervous system, where information is processed and passed up the hierarchy, ending in the auditory cortex. Through these brain pathways, spectral and temporal features of sounds are processed and sent to the cortex for perception. There are also many mechanisms in place for modulation of these inputs, with a major source of modulation being based in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). Neurons of the rodent mPFC receive input from the auditory cortex and other regions such as thalamus, hippocampus and basal forebrain

Frequent detection of anticoagulant rodenticides in raptors sampled in Taiwan reflects government rodent control policy.

Anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) are known to cause extensive secondary exposure in top predators in Europe and North America, but there remains a paucity of data in Asia. In this study, we collected 221 liver samples from 21 raptor species in Taiwan between 2010 and 2018. Most birds were recovered from rescue organizations, but some free-ranging individuals were obtained from bird-strike prevention measures at airports. ARs were detected in 10 species and more than half of the total samples. Common rodent-eating Black-winged Kites (Elanus caeruleus) had the highest prevalence (89.2%) and high

Evaluation of rodent control to fight Lassa fever based on field data and mathematical modelling.

The Natal multimammate mouse (Mastomys natalensis) is the reservoir host of Lassa virus, an arenavirus that causes Lassa haemorrhagic fever in humans in West Africa. Because no vaccine exists and therapeutic options are limited, preventing infection through rodent control and human behavioural measures is currently considered to be the only option. In order to assess the efficacy of rodent control, we performed a 4-year field experiment in rural Upper Guinea and developed a mathematical model to simulate different control strategies (annual density control, continuous density control, and rode

Ivermectin as a rodent feed-through insecticide for control of immature sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae).

Ivermectin was evaluated as a potential rodent feed-through for the control of immature stages of Phlebotomus papatasi. The survival of sand fly larvae fed feces of Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) that had been fed a diet containing 0, 2, 6, 10, 20, 60, or 100 ppm ivermectin was measured. Sand fly larvae fed the feces of ivermectin-treated hamsters had significantly reduced survival, with 100% mortality of larvae fed feces of hamsters fed a diet containing 20, 60, and 100 ppm ivermectin. The results of this study suggest that a control strategy using rodent baits containing ivermectin t

Circuits in the rodent brainstem that control whisking in concert with other orofacial motor actions.

The world view of rodents is largely determined by sensation on two length scales. One is within the animal's peri-personal space; sensorimotor control on this scale involves active movements of the nose, tongue, head, and vibrissa, along with sniffing to determine olfactory clues. The second scale involves the detection of more distant space through vision and audition; these detection processes also impact repositioning of the head, eyes, and ears. Here we focus on orofacial motor actions, primarily vibrissa-based touch but including nose twitching, head bobbing, and licking, that control se

Ecological and control techniques for sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) associated with rodent reservoirs of leishmaniasis.

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis remains a global health problem because of the substantial holes that remain in our understanding of sand fly ecology and the failure of traditional vector control methods. The specific larval food source is unknown for all but a few sand fly species, and this is particularly true for the vectors of Leishmania parasites. We provide methods and materials that could be used to understand, and ultimately break, the transmission cycle of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We demonstrated in laboratory studies that analysis of the stable carbon and ni
