The androgen receptor and prostate cancer: a role for sexual selection and sexual conflict?

We propose and evaluate the hypothesis that the CAG repeat region of the androgen receptor represents a locus of antagonistic pleiotropy in the context of sexual selection and sexual conflict. Short repeats are associated with increased transactivation of the androgen receptor at the molecular level, and increased fertility at the phenotypic level. However, short repeats are also associated with increased risk of prostate cancer, and with more aggressive forms of the disease. The somatic evolution of cancer cell lineages also shows a repeated pattern of shortening of the CAG repeat in associat

The role of conflict with parents in disordered eating among British Asian females.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have found British Asian schoolgirls' EAT-26 (Eating Attitudes Test) scores to be higher than those of White schoolgirls and positively associated with parental overprotection as measured by the Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI). This study aimed to determine whether conflict with parents is associated with EAT scores in young British Asian student-aged females. METHODS: Participants completed three questionnaires. A Parent Conflict Questionnaire was devised, consisting of items regarding Role of Women, Marriage Choices, Going Out, and Choice of Friends. This was

The essential role of primate orbitofrontal cortex in conflict-induced executive control adjustment.

Conflict in information processing evokes trial-by-trial behavioral modulations. Influential models suggest that adaptive tuning of executive control, mediated by mid-dorsal lateral prefrontal cortex (mdlPFC) and anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), underlies these modulations. However, mdlPFC and ACC are parts of distributed brain networks including orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), and superior-dorsal lateral prefrontal cortex (sdlPFC). Contributions of these latter areas in adaptive tuning of executive control are unknown. We trained monkeys to perform a matching tas

Experiencing Burnout: John Henryism, Gender Role Conflict, and Anxiety Among Incarcerated Black Men.

At the intersection of race and gender, Black men encounter conflicting and often stress-inducing gender norms. Research suggests Black men may utilize John Henryism Active Coping (JHAC), a culturally-relevant strategy to manage stress. However, little is known about how incarcerated Black men cope with gender role conflict (GRC) and resulting psychological distress. To better understand stressors and coping strategies among Black male prisoners, the current study examined the relationships between GRC, anxiety, and JHAC among N = 193 incarcerated Black men nearing community reentry. Linking citizenship pressure to work-family conflict: the mediating role of citizenship fatigue and the moderating role of mindfulness.

BACKGROUND: With volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity, employees are often encouraged to take on tasks beyond their responsibilities, which may lead to citizenship fatigue, and be associated with work-family conflict. As an important individual resource, mindfulness may buffer this process. METHODS: drawing on resource conservation theory and role pressure theory, this study examines the mechanism underlying the relationship between citizenship pressure and employees’ work-family conflict and constructs a mediating model that includes citizenship fatigue and mindfulness. The data

From Narcissism to Violence: The Mediating Role of Conflict in Pakistani Married Romantic Partnerships.

Narcissistic personality traits typically involve patterns of entitlement, self-centeredness, and a need for admiration, which may contribute to maladaptive interpersonal outcomes. However, the pathways through which these traits lead to Inter-partner violence are under-researched, especially in the Global South. Therefore, the current study aims to address this gap using a cross-sectional research design. The data were collected from 251 married couples, aged between 25 and 40 years (M = 33.49, SD = 4.81). Participants were provided with well-established and psychometrically sound measures, i

Childhood family adversity and adult cortisol response: The role of observed marital conflict behavior.

Childhood family adversity predicts adult interpersonal behavior and physiological responses to interpersonal stress. Additionally, negative marital behaviors (e.g., hostility and distress maintaining attributions) predict maladaptive stress responses and mental health problems, whereas positive marital behaviors (e.g., acceptance and relationship enhancing attributions) predict adaptive physiological and psychological outcomes. The present study examined potential marital behavior mediators and moderators of the link between childhood adversity and cortisol responses to conflict. In a sample

The role of family conflict in mediating impulsivity to early substance exposure among preteens.

OBJECTIVES: Preadolescence substance exposure, which increases the risk of regular substance use, has been a public health concern. Although studies found that impulsivity is a predisposing factor of early substance exposure, the pathways through which impulsivity is associated with early substance exposure remain unclear. This study examined how family conflict mediates this association among U.S. preteens as family environment plays an essential role in pre-adolescent development. METHODS: Respondents (N = 11,800, 9-10 years old) from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study

The role of child adrenocortical functioning in pathways between interparental conflict and child maladjustment.

This study examined the interplay between interparental conflict and child cortisol reactivity to interparental conflict in predicting child maladjustment in a sample of 178 families and their kindergarten children. Consistent with the allostatic load hypothesis (McEwen & Stellar, 1993), results indicated that interparental conflict was indirectly related to child maladjustment through its association with individual differences in child cortisol reactivity. Analyses indicated that the multimethod assessment of interparental conflict was associated with lower levels of child cortisol reactivit

Armed conflict and birthweight: The role of organized violence and anti-coca fumigation in Colombia.

Armed conflict has been associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes, with long-term negative health effects for current and future generations. This study analyzes birthweight in Colombia, where a long-standing conflict has created multiple stressors that may impair maternal and child health, including high levels of conflict mortality and anti-coca fumigation. We analyze births in 2000-2016 using Demographic and Health Survey data from 2004/2005, 2009/2010 and 2015/2016, which identified women's births in the last five years, combined with monthly information about local organized violence and

Immunoproteasomes in Skeletal Muscle Pathologies: Emerging Roles, Conflicting Evidence, and Future Directions.

Skeletal muscle pathologies, including sarcopenia, inflammatory myopathies, and various muscular dystrophies, are strongly influenced by chronic low-grade inflammation and impaired proteostasis. Immunoproteasomes (IMPs), inducible proteolytic complexes activated by pro-inflammatory cytokines, are emerging as regulators linking immune signaling to protein quality control. Evidence suggests that IMPs have paradoxical, context-dependent roles in skeletal muscle. On one hand, they can support proteostasis and muscle regeneration under stress; on the other, persistent activation may sustain cytokin

An experimental investigation of the role of appraisal processes in adolescents and their mothers experiencing family conflict.

A social information processing perspective was used to investigate appraisal processes in family conflict situations. Fifty-five young adolescents (32 males and 23 females) and their mothers who were experiencing sufficient conflict to seek mediation assistance, were presented with hypothetical scenarios depicting common sources of conflict. Participants were randomly assigned to two time conditions. After reading each scenario, participants chose one of four interpretations (two hostile and two non-hostile). Time condition did not influence the number of hostile interpretations for mothers,

Recurrent outbreaks of cholera in Nigeria: a narrative review on the role of conflict and climate change.

Cholera remains a major public health problem in Nigeria, with recurrent outbreaks linked to weak water and sanitation services. We conducted a narrative review of published studies and reports and examined how conflict and climate variability contribute to cholera risk and how these drivers interact. Evidence shows that conflict increases cholera transmission mainly through population displacement, overcrowding, and the breakdown of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) systems, surveillance, and health services. Climate hazards, especially heavy rainfall, flooding, and drought, increase expos

Suicidality among gambling helpline callers: A consideration of the role of financial stress and conflict.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: High rates of suicidal ideation and attempts secondary to gambling are well established among those with gambling disorders. The present study explores potential risk factors for suicidal ideation and/attempt among a sample of help-line callers. METHODS: Participants (N = 202) completed measures assessing demographics; gambling behavior; and financial, family/social, employment, substance use, and legal difficulties related to gambling. Bivariate analyses, logistic regression, and mediation analyses were used to explore relationship between predictors and risk of su

Methylphenidate and brain activity in a reward/conflict paradigm: role of the insula in task performance.

Psychostimulants, such as methylphenidate, are thought to improve information processing in motivation-reward and attention-activation networks by enhancing the effects of more relevant signals and suppressing those of less relevant ones; however the nature of such reciprocal influences remains poorly understood. To explore this question, we tested the effect of methylphenidate on performance and associated brain activity in the Anticipation, Conflict, Reward (ACR) task. Sixteen healthy adult volunteers, ages 21-45, were scanned twice using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) as they

Microvascular decompression for neurovascular conflicts in the cerebello-pontine angle: which role for endoscopy?

BACKGROUND: Microvascular decompression (MVD) is the surgical intervention designed to resolve neurovascular conflicts (NCs) in the cerebellopontine angle (CPA). Today, endoscopy is commonly used in many neurosurgical procedures. This study aims to retrospectively assess the usefulness of endoscopy during MVD, focusing on microscopic endoscopic-assisted (MEA) MVD. METHODS: Between January 2010 and December 2012, 141 patients underwent MVD procedures: 119 (84.5 %) were affected by idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia (TN), 20 (14 %) by hemifacial spasm (HFS), 1 by glossopharyngeal neuralgia (GN) an

Management of penetrating abdominal trauma in the conflict environment: the role of computed tomography scanning.

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography (CT) scanning is a vital imaging technique in selecting patients for nonoperative management of civilian penetrating abdominal trauma. This has reduced the rate of nontherapeutic laparotomies and associated complications. Battlefield abdominal injuries conventionally mandate laparotomy, and with the advent of field deployable CT scanners it is unclear whether some ballistic injuries can be managed conservatively. METHODS: A retrospective 12 month cohort of patients admitted to a forward surgical facility in Afghanistan who sustained penetrating abdominal injury
