Echinococcus multilocularis, the causative agent of alveolar echinococcosis (AE) in humans, has been found in 4.8% of 561 red foxes originating from various regions of Romania. Infected foxes were identified in 8 of 15 counties with average prevalence rates between 1.7% and 14.6%. In previous studies, E. multilocularis was not found in 535 foxes from three counties, but larval stages (metacestodes) were present in four species of rodents. Furthermore, AE was diagnosed in two patients. Experiences from other European regions indicate that several factors (such as increasing fox populations with

Antrax infection, a major bacterial zoonosis caused by B. anthracis, affects animals, particulary the herbivores. The infection can be accidentally transmitted to man, in whom it has two forms. Cutaneous anthrax, more frequently encountered (95%), the transmission being favoured by the contact with contaminated animal or, after the sacrifice of the animal, with various contaminated products (skin, wool, hair, especially of goat, as well as bones, meat, blood); the evolution is favourable following treatment. Internal (visceral)--pulmonary, gastro-intestinal, meningo-encephalytic--anthrax cause

BACKGROUND: West Nile fever (WNF) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus infection endemic in Africa and Asia. In 1996, the first major WNF epidemic in Europe occurred in Romania, with a high rate of neurological infections. We investigated the epidemic to characterise transmission patterns in this novel setting and to determine its origin.
METHODS: Hospital-based surveillance identified patients admitted with acute aseptic meningitis and encephalitis in 40 Romanian districts, including Bucharest. Infection was confirmed with IgM capture and indirect IgG ELISAs. In October, 1996, we surveyed outpatie

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasmosis is a widespread zoonosis caused by the intracellular protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii. Limited epidemiological information is available about the prevalence of T. gondii in sheep in Romania, and a high incidence would have implications for both the economy and public health. To our knowledge, no studies are available about the T. gondii strains circulating in lambs. The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of T. gondii in sheep (serology), lambs (serology, bioassay, PCR) and sheep abortions (PCR) in Romania. Moreover, the study aimed to perform the

Despite proven effectiveness and safety of vaccinations, immunization rates are decreasing across Europe, most countries having suboptimal vaccination coverage, leading to an increase in the number of cases of preventable contagious diseases. In recent years, the number of parents who have refused to vaccinate their children in Romania has decreased substantially, while the number of fatal complications due to measles outbreak is one of the highest in Europe. Since healthcare professionals have been identified as the main advocates for immunization, knowledge and attitudes of medical students

BACKGROUND: Due to the absence of validated screening tools for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in adults without intellectual or language deficits in Romania, clinicians often overlook ASD during evaluations, leading to frequent misdiagnoses. To screen for symptoms of comorbid pathologies in an ASD sample compared with a non-ASD sample using the Psychiatric Diagnostic Screening Questionnaire (PDSQ) and to establish cut-off scores for the Romanian-translated versions of the Autism Quotient (AQ) and Empathy Quotient (EQ).
METHODS: The study included 143 participants, 31 diagnosed with ASD and 1

Implementing Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols presents challenges for healthcare systems, particularly for patients undergoing complex surgeries. Though ERAS effectively reduces postoperative complications and hospital stays, its implementation varies. Our hospital adopted the ERAS protocol in 2020. This study details specific ERAS components implemented in our clinic, emphasizing surgical and anesthetic strategies. We describe preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases and analyze the evidence for each component's integration. Additionally, we highlight the specifi

Infections by the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii are widely prevalent in humans and other animals worldwide. However, information from eastern European countries is sketchy. In many eastern European countries, including Romania, it has been assumed that chronic T. gondii infection is a common cause of infertility and abortion. For this reason, many women in Romania with these problems were needlessly tested for T. gondii infection. Most papers on toxoplasmosis in Romania were published in Romanian in local journals and often not available to scientists in other countries. Currently, the

BACKGROUND: There are 72 families with epidermolysis bullosa (EB) in Romania. Since 2012 a National Program for the treatment of these patients is run by the Ministry of Health. The objectives of the strategies for EB patients are to optimize the management (diagnosis, treatment, monitoring) and to provide actual information on classification and patho-physiology which dictate the course of the disease.
METHODS: An international expert panel of specialists produced by consensus the recommendations for the management of EB cases in Romania taking into account the local possibilities. Patient as

Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is a viral illness usually occurring during the summer months in children younger than 5 years of age. In the North-East area of Romania the incidence is usually low, each dermatologist reporting 1-2 cases or even less per year. The diagnosis is usually based on the characteristic clinical aspect: vesicles and papules on the hands and feet and superficial oral ulcers. HFMD is typically a benign and self-limiting disease that resolves in approximately 7 days; in Asia there have been few reported severe cases that developed neurological complications and even

Intestinal parasitic diseases such as enterobiasis, giardiasis, and ascariasis are detected most frequently in Romania, but their importance is definitely surpassed by trichinellosis, cystic echinococcosis, and toxoplasmosis. Malaria was common until its eradication in 1963, and only imported cases are reported nowadays. The aim of this review was to bring together essential data on the epidemiology and history of human parasitoses in Romania. Information on 43 parasitic diseases was collected from numerous sources, most of them unavailable abroad or inaccessible to the international scientifi

Visceral leishmaniasis is produced by a protozoan parasite that belongs to the genus Leishmania. Transmission is made through sting, the vector being represented by a species of the genus Phlebotomus. The first case of visceral leishmaniasis in Romania was reported by Manicatide (1912). In 1934, it was described a focus of visceral leishmaniasis in Oltenia region (24 cases). The symptoms of disease are unspecific: fatigue, feverishness, cephalalgia, anorexia, nausea, obnubilation status. The fever is irregular, with high oscillations. Clinical, a sallow pallor of the skin, enlarge lymph nodes,

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a rare but increasingly recognized parasitic infection in non-endemic European regions, including Romania. We report two cases of VL diagnosed in Timiș County, Western Romania, in 2020: a 57-year-old male presenting with fever, massive splenomegaly, and severe pancytopenia, and a 51-year-old male presenting atypically with fatigue, bicytopenia, and absence of organomegaly. Both patients were diagnosed through bone marrow aspirate examination revealing Leishmania amastigotes. Both cases were classified as imported VL, with exposure linked to endemic regions of eas

Malocclusions have a continuously increasing prevalence from one generation to another as a result of climate change, soil, atmosphere, and water pollution. All of these aspects have unfavorable consequences for the nutritional scheme. Thus, nutrition, together with other etiopathogenic factors, contributes to complex alterations in the somatic development of the entire organism and, implicitly, of the cephalic extremity. The study group included 4147 children from randomly selected schools from Vâlcea County, Romania. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of malocclusions in sc

In response to the 1996 West Nile (WN) fever epidemic that occurred in Bucharest and southeastern Romania, a surveillance program was established. The surveillance system detected 39 clinical human WN fever cases during the period 1997-2000: 14 cases in 1997, 5 cases in 1998, 7 cases in 1999, and 13 cases in 2000. Thirty-eight of the 39 case-patients lived in the greater Danube Valley of southern Romania, and 1 case-patient resided in the district of Vaslui, located on the Moldavian plateau. The estimated annual case incidence rate for the surveillance area during the period 1997-2000 was 0.95

Background: Evidence suggests that the uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated changes have negatively influenced breastfeeding practices. Considering that breastfeeding women are already known to be more vulnerable in terms of emotional status, the aim of our study was to evaluate the experiences and concerns of breastfeeding women in Romania during the pandemic. Also, we tried to identify the most effective measures for mitigating the negative impacts. Methods: A 46-item questionnaire was developed for data collection and it was shared on Facebook and Instagram, with
