Assessment of dentinal microcrack formation following root canal preparation with rotary, reciprocating and heat-treated NiTi files using micro-CT analysis.

Dentinal microcrack formation during root canal preparation is a critical concern as it predisposes to vertical root fracture and treatment failure. Therefore, it is of interest to evaluate microcrack formation after instrumentation with three nickel-titanium systems (ProTaper Gold, WaveOne Gold and HyFlex EDM) using high-resolution micro-computed tomography. Hence, sixty human mandibular premolars (n=20 per group) were scanned pre-and post-instrumentation and microcracks were assessed for number, length and depth by blinded examiners. WaveOne Gold showed the highest microcrack formation, ProT

Periapical Healing Following Root Canal Treatment with Narrow (0.04) Or Wide (0.07) Preparation Tapers in Private Practice: A Retrospective Observational Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVE: The optimal root canal preparation taper remains a subject of debate; smaller sizes putatively favoring fracture resistance and larger, better disinfection. This study evaluated the periapical healing outcome following narrow (0.04) tapered root canal preparation compared with wider tapered preparations (0.07) during non-surgical root canal treatment (NSRCT). METHODS: Clinical and radiographic records of NSRCT completed by a single operator in an endodontic specialist practice were retrospectively reviewed. Two-hundred-and-eighty-nine teeth prepared with either a 0.04 (n=157) or 0.

Effect of preparation taper and sealer type on fracture resistance of mesiobuccal roots with MB2 canals in maxillary first molars: an in vitro study.

BACKGROUND: The mesiobuccal roots of maxillary first molars frequently contain a second mesiobuccal (MB2) canal, where limited dentin thickness near the furcation may compromise root strength during instrumentation. This study evaluated the effects of MB2 preparation taper and sealer type on fracture resistance in these roots. METHODS: Sixty extracted maxillary first molars with an MB2 canal in the mesiobuccal root were identified using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Teeth with two canals in the mesiobuccal root, either separate or merging within the apical 1-2 mm, were included. Mesio

Comparative Assessment of Observed Dentinal Defects Following Root Canal Preparation With TruNatomy, ProTaper Next, and Dia-X Nickel-Titanium Rotary Systems: An In Vitro Study.

Endodontic treatment relies on effective root canal preparation using nickel-titanium (NiTi) rotary instruments; however, dentinal defects may be observed following mechanical canal preparation. A total of 40 extracted human mandibular premolars with single roots and single straight canals were randomly allocated into four groups (n = 10), control (unprepared), TruNatomy (TRN), ProTaper Next (PTN), and Dia-X. Root canal was prepared using an ENDO-MATE DT endodontic motor (NSK, Japan), and horizontally sectioned from the apex using a low-speed diamond disc, corresponding to apical, middle, and

A new method to measure the mechanical properties of rotary endodontic Ni-Ti files: Measurement of 6-axis force/torque and automatic root canal preparation.

The purpose of this study was to develop a new instrument to measure the mechanical properties of rotary endodontic Ni-Ti files (ProTaper Gold F2, ProTaper Ultimate F2, and HyFlex EDM Onefile), and to evaluate the overall utility of the device. The instrument was capable of analyzing the 6-axis force/torque generated by the files during cyclic dynamic movement in a metal curved artificial root canal, and doing automatic cyclic dynamic filing in a resin root canal with a preset vertical force limit by adopting a negative feedback mechanism. By analyzing the 6-axis force/torque, we were able to

Comparative evaluation of dentin microcrack formation after root canal preparation with different nickel-titanium instrument systems based on micro-CT: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Dentin microcracks following root canal treatment may progress to vertical root fractures, a severe clinical complication. Engine-driven nickel-titanium (NiTi) instruments are associated with dentin microcrack initiation, but current evidence remains inconsistent. This review systematically synthesizes micro-CT-derived evidence on the effects of different NiTi instrument systems on dentin microcrack formation. METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and grey literature was performed from inception to October 1, 2025. Eligible studi
