Risk indicators for root caries in institutionalized elders.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the risk indicators for root caries in institutionalized elders. METHODS: Nonfrail elders living in 21 residential elderly homes who had at least 5 teeth with exposed roots were examined in this cross-sectional study. The dental examinations were conducted by one trained dentist in the elderly homes using a portable clinic light, mouth mirror, and dental explorer. Two-level logistic regression analyses, one using the presence of decay and the other using decay/filling in the root surface as the dependent variable, were conducted to study the relationship between root

Accessing and restoring root caries: a case report.

Adequate access to root caries can be problematic. The inability to view, isolate, and access the entire lesion may result in residual caries, poor adaptation of the restoration, and defective margins. Minor periodontal procedures, ranging from a mini-flap involving only one tooth, to conventional flap surgery can provide increased visibility and access to these troublesome areas. Through utilization of this technique, excellent preparations and restorations can be achieved. Restorative materials with a high potential for fluoride release as well as uptake should be highly considered in cases

Microradiography of experimental root surface caries in man.

The aim of this study was to describe the pattern and rate of mineral loss during experimental root surface caries in situ without giving frequent sucrose rinses as a supplementary cariogenic challenge. Six elderly persons carried at total of 18 specimens of unerupted human root surface in recessions of lower partial dentures for 1, 2 and 3 months. Another six root surfaces served as controls. No cleaning of the specimens was allowed during the experimental period whereas the natural dentition was cleaned with a nonfluoride toothpaste. All the specimens, as observed by quantitative microradiog

Challenges in differential diagnosis and treatment of cervical root resorption vs. root caries.

External cervical root resorption may be occasionally mistaken for root caries and vice versa. Radiographical and clinical differential diagnoses of cervical root resorption and root caries are essential for correct treatment planning and a successful treatment outcome. This article reviews the contemporary literature and summarises the prevailing professional consensus pertaining to external cervical root resorption. Clinical diagnostics which help distinguish cervical root resorption from root caries are outlined and treatment approaches of external cervical root resorption are discussed.

Periodontal esthetics and soft-tissue root coverage for treatment of cervical root caries.

As the pace of change accelerates in periodontics and esthetic dentistry, an increasing number of procedures are being developed that require knowledge and treatment from both fields. The synergy developed by combining these two fields of dentistry allows for better esthetic outcomes for our patients. Two of these procedures include esthetic crown lengthening and soft-tissue root coverage. As demonstrated in this article, soft-tissue root coverage can be performed on previously restored roots and as an option for treating root caries.

An appliance for monitoring the shrinkage of root caries with OCT.

Demineralized root dentin and cementum are mostly collagen that shrinks significantly upon dehydration. Active root caries lesions manifest shrinkage upon dehydration, however during the remineralization of root caries lesions mineral is deposited on the outside of the lesion arresting the lesion and arrested lesions no longer manifest shrinkage upon dehydration. Optical coherence tomography is ideally suited for the measurement of that shrinkage for the assessment of lesion activity. In this study the shrinkage of natural root caries lesions on extracted teeth were measured using a CP-OCT sys

[Will root caries become a treatment problem of the future?].

Based upon the present prevalence of root caries an attempt is taken to evaluate the future importance of this carious type. A population sample of 2,261 men and women aged 35 to 74 years were examined. The participation rate was 81%. Root caries was recorded when the lesion was obviously soft and located on cementum. The prevalence of root caries increased for both sexes almost consistently with age and ranged between 49 and 73%. In the mean 1.8 to 2.9 teeth were affected. Root caries was found more often among men than women. Over the sixth decades the reduction of the relative frequency of

Prevalence of root caries in the adult Finnish population.

A sample of 8000 persons was drawn to represent the Finnish population aged 30 years and over. The participation rate was 89.9%. Root caries was recorded when the lesion was obviously soft and more than half of it was located on cementum. Lesions adjacent to fillings were not included. The reproducibility and the standard of the clinical recordings were tested by reexamining 20% of the studied population 2-6 months after the first clinical examination. The overall prevalence of root caries was 21.6% for men and 14.5% for women. The prevalence increased for both sexes almost consistently with a

The landscape of the microbiome at different stages of root caries.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between microorganisms and root caries, identify core species, and explore their interactions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty patients with different levels of root caries were included. Plaques from superficial (n = 30) and deep root caries (n = 30) and sound root surfaces (n = 30) were collected. Microbial diversity and composition across different stages of root caries were analyzed using 16 S rRNA and 18 S rRNA high-throughput sequencing. Wilcoxon paired comparisons were conducted to minimize individual variations. LefSe analysis was performed to

Comparative analysis of microbiome in coronal and root caries.

BACKGROUND: The global rise in the elderly population has increased the prevalence of root caries. Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacilli and Actinomyces are considered the primary pathogens of dental caries in culture-based studies. This study aimed to investigate bacterial profiles in coronal and root caries lesions and determine the association of specific bacterial genera at each site. METHODS: Dentine samples from carious lesions were collected from 22 extracted teeth using an excavator. Microbial DNA was extracted from the samples using a protocol developed for this study. 16S rRNA gene amp

Root caries in the elderly: an update for the next century.

Root caries is an emerging challenge to the dental professions because of the growing number of increasingly aging adults who have retained many or all of their teeth. Risk factors for developing root caries point to both intraoral and environmental factors, making the management of root caries complex and multidisciplinary. Prevention is the most desirable approach for management, but patients who have developed caries of the roots can be treated with remineralization strategies or a variety of restorative approaches. Dental professionals need to keep abreast of new approaches emerging for th

Automated differentiation of caries requiring filling and caries necessitating root canal treatment using machine learning.

OBJECTIVES: Novice dentists or those at the onset of their professional careers require assistance in diagnosing cases that necessitate fillings or root canal treatments. In this study, we propose an innovative recommendation system based on deep learning to assist dentists in identifying the type of tooth caries (requiring filling and necessitating root canal treatment) and determining the appropriate treatment for detected caries. Correctly identifying the type of caries in teeth with no caries, only one type of caries, or more than one type of caries is important for determining the type of

Human root caries: microbiota in plaque covering sound, carious and arrested carious root surfaces.

The plaque microbiota covering sound or carious root surfaces were studied and compared with that covering arrested root caries lesions. From each of these categories five extracted teeth were examined. The experimental design of the study allowed us to relate the qualitative and quantitative microbial composition to the degree of integrity of the root surface. Plaque was sampled by a newly developed 'mowing' technique. Plaque samples were cultured anaerobically on nonselective Columbia blood agar plates supplemented with 5% hemolyzed human blood and on media selective for Lactobacillus spp. a
