LL-37 as a biomarker for therapeutic response to scaling and root planing.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis is a chronic immune-inflammatory disease influenced by multiple factors. LL-37, an antimicrobial peptide, contributes to host defense, immune regulation, and tissue repair. Its subgingival expression following nonsurgical periodontal therapy remains underexplored. This study evaluates LL-37 gene expression as a potential biomarker for response to scaling and root planing (SRP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty systemically healthy patients (17 males and 13 females; aged 30-50 years) with Stage II or III periodontitis were included. Clinical parameters - probing pocket d

Scaling and root planing vs. conservative surgery in the treatment of chronic periodontitis.

A renewed interest in conservative surgical techniques has been fueled by new technology, changes in referral patterns to periodontists and a desire to achieve periodontal health in the least invasive, most cost-efficient manner possible. Trends suggest that an increasing amount of periodontal care is being provided in the offices of general dentists. If true, it is likely that patients receiving care in these offices will be offered simpler surgical treatment modalities that do not require an extensive armamentarium. The purpose of this article was to review the effectiveness of six relativel

Effect of root planing on surface topography: an in-vivo randomized experimental trial.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The root surface topography exerts a major influence on clinical attachment and bacterial recolonization after root planing. In-vitro topographic studies have yielded variable results, and clinical studies are necessary to compare root surface topography after planing with current ultrasonic devices and with traditional manual instrumentation. The aim of this study was to compare the topography of untreated single-rooted teeth planed in vivo with a curette, a piezoelectric ultrasonic (PU) scraper or a vertically oscillating ultrasonic (VOU) scraper. Serum anticardiolipin concentrations in patients with chronic periodontitis following scaling and root planing.

BACKGROUND: Anticardiolipin antibodies (antiCl), present in some patients with autoimmune disease, are associated with thrombosis, fetal loss, and other conditions. A significant proportion of patients with chronic periodontitis (CP) test positive for antiCl, likely because some periodontal pathogens contain antigens homologous to the target antigen of antiCl on the serum protein β-2 glycoprotein-I (β2GPI) and thus can induce antiCl by molecular mimicry. The authors hypothesized that treatment of periodontitis by scaling and root planing (SRP) could therefore decrease serum titers of antiCl in

Effectiveness of root planing with diode laser curettage for the treatment of periodontitis.

This study investigated the effectiveness of scaling/root planing using closed approach, closed approach with laser-curettage, closed approach with laser-curettage/laser-sealing, and an open approach (papilla reflection/flap closure) in treating moderate-advanced chronic periodontitis. All treatments resulted in a reduction in probing depth and bleeding upon probing. The closed approach therapies: SRP, laser-curettage/SRP, and laser-curettage/SRP/laser-sealing resulted in less gingival recession than the open approach (papilla reflection/flap closure). If esthetics are a concern, laser-curetta

Clinical effects of scaling and root planing in adults infected with Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans.

The periodontal pathogen Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans can frequently be isolated from subgingival plaque of adults with chronic inflammatory periodontal disease and individuals with plaque-induced gingivitis. Problems with the persistence of the organism after thorough debridement of root surfaces have been reported. In the present study clinical effects of the hygienic phase of periodontal therapy in ten adult patients with moderate or advanced periodontitis harbouring A. actinomycetemcomitans were analysed. Since proper analysis of highly correlated data within a given patient is cru

Effects of full-mouth scaling and root planing in conjunction with systemically administered azithromycin.

BACKGROUND: One-stage full-mouth disinfection (FMD), in which full-mouth scaling and root planing (SRP) is performed with adjunctive use of chlorhexidine, was introduced in 1995. There have been several reports on the effectiveness of this treatment protocol. However, FMD was reported to induce pyrexia frequently. We examined the effects of full-mouth SRP in conjunction with azithromycin administered orally before SRP to control the number of bacteria. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of full-mouth SRP using azithromycin with conventional SRP. METHODS: Thirty-four subjects
