Comparison of ropivacaine and fentanyl toxicity in human fibroblasts.

INTRODUCTION: The status of HIV and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections among incarcerated populations in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and the links between prisons and the HIV epidemic are poorly understood. This review synthesized available HIV and HCV data in prisons in MENA and highlighted opportunities for action. METHODS: The review was based on data generated through the systematic searches of the MENA HIV/AIDS Epidemiology Synthesis Project (2003 to December 15, 2015) and the MENA HCV Epidemiology Synthesis Project (2011 to December 15, 2015). Sources of data included peer-r

Persistent hiccups associated with epidural ropivacaine in a newborn.

OBJECTIVE: To report a case of persistent hiccups associated with epidural ropivacaine in a newborn infant. CASE SUMMARY: A term female infant (3.05 kg) received epidural ropivacaine for pain control during and after an operative procedure to correct a tracheoesophageal fistula. Three intermittent doses of ropivacaine were administered during the operative period (total dose 2.29 mg/kg) followed by a continuous epidural (caudal) infusion (0.1% ropivacaine; initial dose 0.23 mg/kg/h plus fentanyl 0.46 μg/kg/h). The infant was extubated in the recovery area and transferred to the intensive care…

Ropivacaine: A review of its pharmacology and clinical use.

Ropivacaine is a long-acting amide local anaesthetic agent and first produced as a pure enantiomer. It produces effects similar to other local anaesthetics via reversible inhibition of sodium ion influx in nerve fibres. Ropivacaine is less lipophilic than bupivacaine and is less likely to penetrate large myelinated motor fibres, resulting in a relatively reduced motor blockade. Thus, ropivacaine has a greater degree of motor sensory differentiation, which could be useful when motor blockade is undesirable. The reduced lipophilicity is also associated with decreased potential for central nervou…

The assessment of anesthetic efficacy of ropivacaine in oral surgery.

This paper describes the application of ropivacaine, local, amid, long-acting anesthetic in oral surgery. For infiltrative anesthesia, 0.75% of Naropin (ropivacaine) was used in eight patients undergoing various operations (maxillary sinus with oro-antral communication, extraction of upper and lower impacted wisdom teeth, cystectomy, apicoectomy and tooth extraction). The achieved anesthesia in all patients enabled analgesia in the course of the operation, and the expected intraoperative and postoperative bleeding, whereas postoperative analgesia lasted long enough (up to 380 minutes) to preve…

Levobupivacaine and ropivacaine: the new choices for labor analgesia.

For several decades, bupivacaine has enjoyed great clinical popularity as the first choice local anaesthetic for pain control in labour. However, introduction of ropivacaine and most recently levobupivacaine, the two newer and presumably safer (thought to be less cardio- and neurotoxic than bupivacaine) local anaesthetics, has challenged the position of bupivacaine as a gold standard to labour analgesia. Most pregnant patients receive their initial information regarding labour analgesia from primary care providers including family physicians, midwives, and obstetricians. This review article, i…

Postoperative analgesia in TKA: ropivacaine continuous intraarticular infusion.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative pain control is a challenge in patients undergoing TKA due to side effects and technical limitations of current analgesic approaches. Local anesthetic infiltration through continuous infusion pumps has been shown to reduce postoperative pain in previous studies. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We assessed the effectiveness of intraarticular ropivacaine infusions in reducing pain and postoperative opioid use after TKA and determined whether such infusions accelerate functional recovery of the patient and reduce length of hospital stay. METHODS: In a randomized, prospective, doub…

Epidural-Related Fever and Cesarean Delivery: Comparing Ropivacaine/Dexmedetomidine and Ropivacaine/Sufentanil: A Single-Center Randomized Controlled Study in 695 Women.

BACKGROUND Epidural analgesia during labor is known to increase the risk of intrapartum hyperthermia, which can lead to higher cesarean section rates and antibiotic use due to the difficulty in distinguishing it from intrapartum infections. This study investigated the impact of 2 epidural analgesic combinations - ropivacaine/dexmedetomidine and ropivacaine/sufentanil - on the incidence of cesarean deliveries prompted by intrapartum hyperthermia. MATERIAL AND METHODS In this single-center, randomized controlled trial, 695 pregnant women were assigned to receive ropivacaine with either dexmedeto…
