Antiviral potential of anthraquinones from Polygonaceae, Rubiaceae and Asphodelaceae: Potent candidates in the treatment of SARS-COVID-19, A comprehensive review.

Medicinal plants are being used as an alternative source of health management to cure various human ailments. The healing role is attributed to the hidden dynamic groups of various phytoconstituents, most of which have been recorded from plants and their derivatives. Nowadays, medicinal plants have gained more attention due to their pharmacological and industrial potential. Aromatic compounds are one of the dynamic groups of secondary metabolites (SM) naturally present in plants; and anthraquinones of this group are found to be attractive due to their high bioactivity and low toxicity. They ha

Differences in phosphorus translocation contributes to differential arsenic tolerance between plants of Borreria verticillata (Rubiaceae) from mine and non-mine sites.

We have identified new arsenic-tolerant plant species Borreria verticillata (Rubiaceae) that has mine and non-mine populations at a highly contaminated site (CS) and an uncontaminated site (UCS), respectively, in Brazil. Plants of B. verticillata from both sites were cultivated at different As and P concentrations. At low P concentration, CS plants showed reduced As uptake, higher P translocation to shoots, higher constitutive levels of phenolic compounds in roots, and higher tolerance to this metalloid. At the lowest P and highest As concentration, CS plants showed higher biomass. In addition

Phytosterols and triterpenes from Morinda lucida Benth (Rubiaceae) as potential inhibitors of anti-apoptotic BCL-XL, BCL-2, and MCL-1: an in-silico study.

Deregulation of the normal cellular apoptotic function is a fundamental element in the etiology of most cancers and the anti-apoptotic B cell lymphoma 2 (BCL‑2) protein family is known to play crucial role in the regulation of this function. Overexpression of this protein family has been implicated in some cancers, such that agents that could inhibit their over-activity are now being explored for anticancer drug development. A number of studies have revealed the anticancer potential of Morinda lucida-derived extracts and compounds. In search of more inhibitors of this anti-apoptotic protein fa

Structural adaptations of aboveground vegetative organs to cangas: A case study with the Amazonian species Carajasia cangae R.M.Salas, E.L.Cabral & Dessein (Rubiaceae), which grows on ferruginous outcrops.

The Brazilian ironstone outcrops (cangas) impose challenging conditions for establishing species. Adapted species should exhibit different responses to xeric conditions of cangas. To understand these adaptations, our plant model was Carajasia cangae R.M.Salas, E.L.Cabral & Dessein, an endemic and threatened species restricted to the cangas of the Amazon Forest. Herein, we investigate structural adaptations that are important for its conservation, including anatomical characteristics of stems and leaves. To this goal, we evaluated the plant anatomy, including developmental aspects, between plan

Field-to-forest fungal spillover is a biotic edge effect of coffee in Costa Rica.

Agricultural expansion creates mosaic landscapes where managed land borders natural ecosystems, facilitating the movement of organisms between habitats. Ecological spillover from natural systems to crops has been previously examined, but the extent to which populations amplified by agriculture move into adjacent forests remains largely unexplored. We investigated whether Costa Rican coffee fields act as reservoirs for foliar fungi that, because of high crop density and phylogenetic signal in plant-fungal associations, may particularly affect close relatives of coffee (Rubiaceae) in the forest

A Global Analysis of the Distribution Patterns of Style-Length Polymorphisms Across Angiosperms.

Unraveling the evolutionary and biogeographical factors that drive the widespread occurrence of outcrossing mechanisms in plants is key to understanding their prevalence. Style-length polymorphisms (SLP) are labile outcrossing traits that have evolved repeatedly in several angiosperm lineages sharing moderately specialized pollination features, reflecting a convergent strategy to optimize outcrossing efficiency. Notably, over 50% of known genera exhibiting SLP belong to the Rubiaceae family, which, beyond harboring floral architectures that promote pollination precision, is characterized by a

Endophytic bacteria in toxic South African plants: identification, phylogeny and possible involvement in gousiekte.

BACKGROUND: South African plant species of the genera Fadogia, Pavetta and Vangueria (all belonging to Rubiaceae) are known to cause gousiekte (literally 'quick disease'), a fatal cardiotoxicosis of ruminants characterised by acute heart failure four to eight weeks after ingestion. Noteworthy is that all these plants harbour endophytes in their leaves: nodulating bacteria in specialized nodules in Pavetta and non-nodulating bacteria in the intercellular spaces between mesophyll cells in Fadogia and Vangueria. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Isolation and analyses of these endophytes reveal the presence o
