A retrospective study on transabdominal ultrasound measurements of the rumen wall thickness to evaluate chronic rumen acidosis in beef cattle.

BACKGROUND: Chronic and subacute rumen acidosis are economically important in the beef industry. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential suitability of the transabdominal ultrasonographic examination of the ruminal wall to diagnose chronic rumen acidosis in beef cattle compared to direct measurement of ruminal pH, as a fast non-invasive tool to be used in field condition. Ultrasonographic examination of the rumen was conducted in 478 beef cattle before rumenocentesis (chronic rumen acidosis group = pH ≤ 5.8; healthy group = pH ≥ 5.9). Rumen wall ultrasound measurements included rum

[Comparative studies of the parameters of rumen fermentation and the digestibility of feed rations in cattle and sheep. 1. Parameters of rumen fermentation].

The results from 283 studies of rumen liquid, taken by means of oesophagus probe, from different species of cattle (ox, cow, male and female young cattle) and sheep (adult wether) are compared. In the rumen liquid the parts of volatile fatty acids (VFA), total VFA content, pH value and the content of NH3 and urea were analysed. In the cattle's rumen liquid the part of acetic acid is on average 2 Mol-% and the content of total VFA up to 28 mmol/l (middle of the cow--sheep comparisons) higher than in that of wether. The contents of NH3 and urea are lower in cattle than in wether. Relations betwe

Sample Processing Methods Impacts on Rumen Microbiome.

The standardization of collection and processing methods for rumen samples is crucial to reduce the level of errors that may affect the analysis and interpretation of the data. The aim of this study was to compare two processing methods and their impacts on the microbial community composition analysis, from material that was either immediately frozen or samples that were stored as cell pellets after removing the supernatant prior to freezing. Eight rumen-fistulated Brahman steers received chloroform as an antimethanogenic compound for 21 days. Rumen fluid samples (60 mL per animal) were collec

Yeast Culture Alleviates High-Concentrate Diet-Induced Rumen Fermentation Disturbances and Modulates the Rumen Microbiota and Metabolome in Lambs.

This study evaluated whether yeast culture (YC) supplementation could alleviate rumen disturbances induced by a high-concentrate diet in lambs. Forty-five three-month-old Du × Han F1 male lambs were assigned to control (CON), high-concentrate (HC), or HC supplemented with 0.5% YC groups (n = 15 each) for 60 days; six lambs per group were sampled for serum biochemistry, rumen fermentation, 16S rRNA gene sequencing, and untargeted metabolomics. Compared with CON, HC markedly reduced rumen pH (6.55 vs. 5.52) and the acetate-to-propionate ratio (2.67 vs. 1.31), whereas YC increased these values to

Intake limitations, feeding behavior, and rumen function of cows challenged with rumen fill from dietary fiber or inert bulk.

Twelve multiparous, rumen-cannulated cows (17 DIM) were fed 25 or 35% NDF diets without or with added rumen-inert bulk as water-filled plastic containers (500 ml each) within three 4 x 4 Latin squares (21-d periods). Added bulk equaled 25% of pretrial rumen volume for each cow. Objectives were to challenge cows with rumen fill in the form of dietary NDF and inert bulk to determine whether bulk affects intake similarly for diets of different NDF content or whether changes in behavior or rumen function allow cows to adapt to higher fill. Inert bulk had no effect on DMI for cows fed 25% NDF but d

Feeding probiotics-fermented distiller's grains diets increases rumen enzyme activities and glycerophospholipid levels in finishing cattle by modulating rumen microbiota.

BACKGROUND: Distiller's grains (DG), a major by-product of the Chinese Baijiu industry, represent an inexpensive yet high-quality protein raw material. Previous studies have shown that probiotics-fermented distiller's grains (FDG) hold the potential to serve as an effective livestock feed resource. However, the impacts of feeding FDG-based diets on rumen enzyme activities, rumen microbial communities and metabolism in finishing cattle, along with their underlying regulatory mechanisms, remain poorly understood. RESULTS: After 45 days of feeding FDG diets, rumen enzyme activities increased sig

Chicory modulates the rumen environment in lambs with endoparasites.

The most natural areas typically host a variety of plant species that serve as nutritional centers for grazing ruminants. We aimed to determine the growth parameters, histology, and ruminal microbial characteristics of lambs with endoparasites grazing on meadow pasture with experimentally sown chicory (Cichorium intybus). Lambs infected with the larvae of the endoparasite Haemonchus contortus were divided into two groups: lambs grazing in the meadow grassland plot (CON) and lambs grazing in the experimental plot recultivated with chicory (CHIC). Similar initial weights of lambs of both groups

Different forms of rumen dystonia in dairy cows.

Four naturally occurring main forms of rumen dystonia of alimentary origin were observed in cattle: acidotic conditions; microflora inactivity; acidosis, and alkalosis. The following disturbances in the metabolism of carbohydrates, protein and energy were observed: 1. Acidotic conditions in rumen--ruminal pH, total and protein nitrogen decreased, whereas the total amount of VFA and the reduction activity of bacteria increased. 2. Inactivity of rumen microflora--significant changes of pH of rumen fluid were not observed, but the total number and activity of infusoria decreased. Fermentation of

The sequential contractions of the rumen associated with eructation in sheep.

1. The orderly sequential movements of the reticulum and the rumen were studied in conscious sheep by electromyography using enamelled stainless-steel wires implanted in various regions of the stomach wall and by recording mechanical changes within the various parts of the organ. Electrical activity of the rumen and/or pressure changes were related to eructation when the animals were at rest, feeding or ruminating.2. Secondary contractions of the rumen were found to originate in the ventral blind sac immediately following a primary contraction or independently. The wave of contraction originat

Ruminant forestomach and abomasal mucormycosis under rumen acidosis.

Spores of Absidia corymbifera were inoculated orally into sheep with ruminal acidosis produced by feeding barley. Lesions, which developed in forestomachs of all four inoculated cases, included desquamation of superficial layers of the mucosae and focal necrosis from lamina propria to muscular layers. Granulomatous lesions were in the submucosa of three sheep. Lesions in the abomasum (two sheep) included focal necrosis, diffuse hemorrhages, and infiltration of neutrophils. All lesions were accompanied by mycotic proliferation. These results show that A. corymbifera can invade forestomach mucos

Effects of selected feed additives on rumen pH dynamics, physiological responses, and rumen and cecum morphometrics in feedlot beef cattle.

The search for alternatives to ionophore antibiotics such as monensin has increased due to regulatory restrictions and consumer demand for natural feed additives. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of feed additive combinations compared with sodium monensin on performance, carcass traits, ruminal and cecal health, and meat quality in feedlot-finished cattle. Twenty-four F1 Angus-Nellore crossbred bulls (BW = 456 ± 21.77 kg) were randomly assigned to one of three treatments: 1) sodium monensin (MON; 26 mg/kg DM); 2) a blend of essential oils plus α-amylase (BEO, 90 and 560

Repeated inoculation with rumen fluid accelerates the rumen bacterial transition with no benefit on production performance in postpartum Holstein dairy cows.

BACKGROUND: The dairy cow's postpartum period is characterized by dramatic physiological changes, therefore imposing severe challenges on the animal for maintaining health and milk output. The dynamics of the ruminal microbiota are also tremendous and may play a crucial role in lactation launch. We aim to investigate the potential benefits of early microbial intervention by fresh rumen microbiota transplantation (RMT) and sterile RMT in postpartum dairy cows. Twelve fistulated peak-lactation dairy cows were selected to be the donors for rumen fluid collection. Thirty postpartum cows were divid

Effects of feed withdrawal duration on animal behaviour, rumen microbiota and blood chemistry in feedlot cattle: implications for rumen acidosis.

Feed withdrawal (FW) is a frequent issue in open outdoor feedlot systems, where unexpected circumstances can limit the animals' access to food. The relationship among fasting period, animal behaviour during feed reintroduction (FR) and acidosis occurrence has not been completely elucidated. Twenty steers fitted with rumen catheters were fed a high-concentrate diet (concentrate : forage ratio 85 : 15) and were challenged by a protocol of FW followed by FR. The animals were randomly assigned to one of the four treatments: FW for 12 h (T12), 24 h (T24), 36 h (T36) or no FW (control group) followe

Studies of method of conserving grass herbage and frequency of feeding in cattle. 2. Eating behaviour, rumen motility and rumen fill.

The influence of the method of conserving grass herbage and the frequency of feeding on eating behaviour, rumen motility and rumen fill was studied in growing steers. Silage and hay were offered to twelve rumen-cannulated Friesian steers (average initial live weight (LW) 128 kg) at a restricted level of intake (20 g dry matter (DM)/kg LW) either once or eight times daily. With once daily feeding, the daily intake of hay was consumed in a single large meal which lasted about 2 h, while silage was eaten in many small meals throughout the day. The proportion of the day spent ruminating was higher

Oral-stomach sampling to replace rumen-fistulated lactating dairy cows in an experimental model of rumen dysfunction from high energy diet.

Studies using fistulated ruminants have yielded tools to determine the feed efficiency of diets, but their ethical acceptability is put into question. Our objective was to determine whether oral-stomach sampling (OSS) is an acceptable alternative to sampling through a ruminal cannula in characterizing the variability of rumen fluid composition induced by an acidogenic dietary challenge in dairy cows. During three four-week periods (P1, P2, P3), six rumen-fistulated cows were fed a standard diet based on supplemented corn silage (periods 1 and 3) or a diet enriched with starch (period 2). Rumen

The rumen liquid metatranscriptome of post-weaned dairy calves differed by pre-weaning ruminal administration of differentially-enriched, rumen-derived inocula.

BACKGROUND: Targeted modification of the dairy calf ruminal microbiome has been attempted through rumen fluid inoculation to alter productive phenotypes later in life. However, sustainable effects of the early life interventions have not been well studied, particularly on the metabolically active rumen microbiota and its functions. This study investigated the sustained effects of adult-derived rumen fluid inoculations in pre-weaning dairy calves on the active ruminal microbiome of post-weaned dairy calves analyzed via RNA-sequencing. RESULTS: Two different adult-derived microbial inocula (bac

Rumen function in goats, an example of adaptive capacity.

The aim of this Research Reflection is to describe the basic rumen function of goats and its modification in response to environmental factors, as well as to discuss similarities and differences when compared to other ruminants. In so doing we shall reveal the adaptive capacity of goats to harsh environments. The basic rumen function in goats is similar to other species of ruminants, as stressed by the opportunity to apply the updates of feeding systems for ruminants to goats. The rumen epithelium acts as a protective barrier between the rumen and the host, but it can be damaged by toxic compo
