Understanding depressive rumination from a cognitive science perspective: the impaired disengagement hypothesis.

Persisting negative thoughts are considered a hallmark of depression. Recent information-processing approaches have begun to uncover underlying mechanisms of depressive rumination. Despite marked advances in this area, there is a lack of integration between psychopathology and cognitive (neuro) science research. We propose the 'impaired disengagement' hypothesis as a unifying framework between both approaches. The core tenet of our model is that prolonged processing of self-referent material is due to impaired attentional disengagement from negative self-referent information. We discuss empiri

Brooding and reflective rumination among suicide attempters: cognitive vulnerability to suicidal ideation.

Previous research suggests that the brooding subtype of rumination is associated with increased suicidal ideation, but findings are inconsistent with respect to reflection, considered to be the more adaptive form of rumination. This study investigated the circumstances under which reflective rumination might be associated with increased suicidal ideation by examining whether a suicide attempt history moderated the relationship between the ruminative subtypes and current suicidal ideation. Thirty-seven young adults who reported a past suicide attempt and fifty-nine young adults without a suicid

The Potential of Wearable Sensors for Detecting Cognitive Rumination: A Scoping Review.

Cognitive rumination, a transdiagnostic symptom across mental health disorders, has traditionally been assessed through self-report measures. However, these measures are limited by their temporal nature and subjective bias. The rise in wearable technologies offers the potential for continuous, real-time monitoring of physiological indicators associated with rumination. This scoping review investigates the current state of research on using wearable technology to detect cognitive rumination. Specifically, we examine the sensors and wearable devices used, physiological biomarkers measured, stand

Collegiate Athletes' Cognitive Beliefs Related to Setback Anxiety and Rumination in Sport.

Setbacks are common occurrences in sport. Recently, setbacks such as injuries and deselection have been accompanied, and confounded, by setbacks related to COVID-19. How students manage a setback may depend on the interaction of two control beliefs: primary control (PC) to directly influence the setback and secondary control (SC) to adjust to it. Purpose: This study investigates the relationships between athletes' PC and SC and two important sport setback-related outcomes-anxiety and rumination. Method: We employed a cross-sectional design examining collegiate athletes in the USA and Canada (N

Individual differences in trait rumination and the neural systems supporting cognitive reappraisal.

Cognitive reappraisal can alter emotional responses by changing one's interpretation of a situation's meaning. Functional neuroimaging has revealed that using cognitive reappraisal to increase or decrease affective responses involves left prefrontal activation and goal-appropriate increases or decreases in amygdala activation (Ochsner, Bunge, Gross, & Gabrieli, 2002; Ochsner, Ray, et al., 2004). The present study was designed to examine whether patterns of brain activation during reappraisal vary in relation to individual differences in trait rumination, which is the tendency to focus on negat

The prediction of intrusions following an analogue traumatic event: peritraumatic cognitive processes and anxiety-focused rumination versus rumination in response to intrusions.

Intrusions are often considered the hallmark of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Despite this, relatively little is known about factors that give rise to intrusions. Cognitive models of PTSD highlight the importance of pre-existing cognitive vulnerabilities, cognitive processing and anxiety during a traumatic event, as well as negative responses to trauma sequelae. However, few studies have examined multiple forms of peritraumatic processes, and rumination in response to trauma intrusions using analogue trauma tasks, and none have examined whether broader anxious ruminative processes cont

"Don't [ruminate], be happy": A cognitive perspective linking depression and anhedonia.

Anhedonia, a lack of pleasure in things an individual once enjoyed, and rumination, the process of perseverative and repetitive attention to specific thoughts, are hallmark features of depression. Though these both contribute to the same debilitating disorder, they have often been studied independently and through different theoretical lenses (e.g., biological vs. cognitive). Cognitive theories and research on rumination have largely focused on understanding negative affect in depression with much less focus on the etiology and maintenance of anhedonia. In this paper, we argue that by examinin

Gene × cognition interaction on stress-induced eating: effect of rumination.

People often crave for high-caloric sweet foods when facing stress and this 'emotional eating' is a most important cause for weight gain and obesity. Eating under stress contrasts with the normally expected response of a loss of appetite, yet in spite of intensive research from neurobiological and cognitive disciplines we still do not know why stress or negative affect triggers overeating in so many of us. Since the prevalence of overweight and obesity still rises, the discovery of crucial risk factors is a most desirable goal of today's research on sub-optimal eating habits. This paper summar

Rumination as a predictor of relapse in mindfulness-based cognitive therapy for depression.

OBJECTIVES: In mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT), it is proposed that training in mindfulness should reduce the tendency of formerly depressed patients to enter into ruminative thinking, thus reducing their risk of depressive relapse. However, data showing that rumination is associated with depressive relapse are lacking. METHOD: In an uncontrolled study with 24 formerly depressed patients, rumination was assessed with the Ruminative Response Scale. To assess the occurrence of relapse or recurrence, the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV was administered 12 months after the end

The effects of rumination and negative cognitive styles on depression: a mediation analysis.

Research on cognitive models of depression has identified negative cognitive styles and rumination as risk factors for depression. The present study examined the hypothesis that rumination mediates the effect of negative cognitive styles on depression. Specifically, we evaluated the differential effects of two aspects of rumination, characterized by brooding and reflection, on the relationship between negative cognitive styles and level of depressive symptoms. A total of 115 college students and 38 patients suffering from depressive disorders completed a battery of questionnaires measuring lev

How Does Rumination Impact Cognition? A First Mechanistic Model.

Rumination is a process of uncontrolled, narrowly focused negative thinking that is often self-referential, and that is a hallmark of depression. Despite its importance, little is known about its cognitive mechanisms. Rumination can be thought of as a specific, constrained form of mind-wandering. Here, we introduce a cognitive model of rumination that we developed on the basis of our existing model of mind-wandering. The rumination model implements the hypothesis that rumination is caused by maladaptive habits of thought. These habits of thought are modeled by adjusting the number of memory ch

EFFECTS OF RUMINATION AND INITIAL SEVERITY ON REMISSION TO COGNITIVE THERAPY FOR DEPRESSION.

Trait rumination, a tendency to focus on depressive symptoms and negative information, is associated with longer and more severe episodes of depression. This study examined whether trait rumination was also associated with initial remission from unipolar depression in Cognitive Therapy, which we hypothesized would target this coping style. Eighty one patients completed measures of depressive severity and rumination before and after 16-20 sessions of procedurally determined Cognitive Therapy. Pre-treatment rumination and severity were generally associated with later initial remission and lower

Cognitive appraisal modulates Theta Burst Stimulation effects on stress-reactive rumination and affect.

The DLPFC plays a central role in cognitive appraisal and stress regulation, as this process-particularly secondary appraisal, where individuals assess their ability to cope with a situation-significantly influences stress responses on both psychological and physiological levels. We conducted a study where we applied different types of Theta Burst Stimulation (intermittent (i)TBS vs. continuous (c)TBS vs. sham (s)TBS) to the left DLPFC to increase or decrease the cortical excitability of the prefrontal neural network. We then examined how participants responded psychologically and physiologica

Depression prevention in digital cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia: Is rumination a mediator?

Background There has been growing support for digital Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (dCBT-I) as a scalable intervention that both reduces insomnia and prevents depression. However, the mechanisms by which dCBT-I reduces and prevents depression is less clear. Methods This was a randomized controlled trial with two parallel arms: dCBT-I (N=358), or online sleep education as the control condition (N=300). Outcome variables were measured at pre-treatment, post-treatment, and one-year follow-up, and included the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), the Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology (QIDS-SR

Psychological symptoms and perceived cognitive impairment in multiple sclerosis: The role of rumination.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE: Perceived cognitive impairment is a common concern among individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS) and is associated with prevalent psychological symptoms, namely depression and anxiety. The mechanisms by which these psychological symptoms are associated with perceived cognitive impairment among people diagnosed with MS have been unexplored. A possible mechanism is rumination, a maladaptive form of self-reflection that is commonly associated with anxiety and depression. The purpose of this study was to examine the associations of symptoms of anxiety and depression with percei

Why Do Bereaved Partners Experience Interfering Rumination?: Evidence for Deficits in Cognitive Inhibition.

Recurring rumination is strongly associated with grief reactions severity. The authors investigated whether deficits in cognitive inhibition were related to such a dysfunctional process. Inhibition was examined among 61 low- or high-ruminating bereaved partners in a negative affective priming task with grief-related negative and positive words. Results revealed impaired inhibition for grief-related information in comparison with negative and positive information in bereaved individuals with elevated rumination. When accounting for differences in grief reactions, the present findings did not ho

Who exhibits cognitive biases? Mapping heterogeneity in attention, interpretation, and rumination in depression.

Although depression is heterogeneous in symptoms, few studies have asked whether cognitive features central to its etiology show similar heterogeneity. We addressed this question in a treatment-seeking sample of adults with at least moderate depression (N = 232) by assessing three biases: (a) attentional dwell time on sad stimuli, (b) negative interpretation of ambiguous stimuli, and (c) brooding rumination. The k-means clustering revealed distinct subgroups for each cognitive feature when considered separately. Latent profile analysis combining the three indicators identified two clear profil

Rumination-focused cognitive-behavioural therapy for residual depression: phase II randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: About 20% of major depressive episodes become chronic and medication-refractory and also appear to be less responsive to standard cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT). AIMS: To test whether CBT developed from behavioural activation principles that explicitly and exclusively targets depressive rumination enhances treatment as usual (TAU) in reducing residual depression. METHOD: Forty-two consecutively recruited participants meeting criteria for medication-refractory residual depression were randomly allocated to TAU v. TAU plus up to 12 sessions of individual rumination-focused CBT

Rumination-focused cognitive behaviour therapy vs. cognitive behaviour therapy for depression: study protocol for a randomised controlled superiority trial.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive behavioural therapy is an effective treatment for depression. However, one third of the patients do not respond satisfactorily, and relapse rates of around 30 % within the first post-treatment year were reported in a recent meta-analysis. In total, 30-50 % of remitted patients present with residual symptoms by the end of treatment. A common residual symptom is rumination, a process of recurrent negative thinking and dwelling on negative affect. Rumination has been demonstrated as a major factor in vulnerability to depression, predicting the onset, severity, and duration o
