Direct-fed microbial supplementation on ruminal digestion, health, and performance of pre- and postpartum dairy cattle.

Effects of supplementing direct-fed microbial agents (DFM) to dairy cows during the transition period were evaluated. Forty-four Holstein cows were fed close-up and lactating diets that did or did not contain 2 g of DFM/cow per d. The direct-fed microbial (DFM) supplement was fed at a rate of 2 × 109 viable yeast cells and 5 × 109 cfu of bacteria per cow per day [corrected].Supplemented cows were fed the DFM 21 d prior to expected calving date through 10 wk postpartum. Cows supplemented with DFM had higher estimated ruminally available dry matter (DM) for both corn silage and haylage than did

Effects of limit-feeding diets with different forage-to-concentrate ratios on nutrient intake, rumination, ruminal fermentation, digestibility, blood parameters and growth in Holstein heifers.

The objective of this study was using a wide range of dietary concentrate levels to investigate the major effects of limit-feeding on heifers. Twenty-four Holstein heifers were blocked into six groups and fed with one of four diets containing different levels of concentrate (20%, 40%, 60% and 80% on a dry matter (DM) basis) but with same intakes of metabolizable energy for 28 days. Increasing levels of dietary concentrate caused decreased (P ≤ 0.02) intakes of dry matter (DMI) and neutral detergent fiber and total rumination time, but increased (P < 0.01) nonfiberous carbohydrates intake, rumi

Effect of wheat hay particle size and replacement of wheat hay with wheat silage on rumen pH, rumination and digestibility in ruminally cannulated non-lactating cows.

This study examined the effects on intake, diurnal rumen pH changes, rumination and digestibility of feeding ruminally cannulated non-lactating cows in a Latin square design (four cows×four periods) with four total mixed rations (TMRs) typical for lactating cows. TMRs were based on: long wheat hay or short wheat hay, wheat silage or wheat silage+1.5% NaHCO3 buffer, as the sole roughage source (30% of TMR dry matter (DM)). The level of physically effective NDF remaining above the 8 mm screen (peNDF) was similar in the long hay and silage-based TMRs (9.45% to 9.64% of DM) and lower in the short

Ultrastructure and histochemistry of the digestive tract of juvenile Paramphistomum epiclitum (Paramphistomidae: Digenea) during migration in Indian ruminants.

The digestive tract of juvenile Paramphistomum epiclitum consists of a foregut with a highly muscular terminal pharynx and an oesophagus, which leads to a pair of unbranched and blind-ending intestinal caeca. A syncytium lining the foregut is continuous with the external tegument and displays similar sensory papillae and secretory bodies (T1 and T2). A third type of secretory body (T3) is confined to the oesophageal cytons of newly excysted juveniles and is first evident in the syncytium by day 14 of migration. An epithelium lining the caeca is composed of a single layer of morphologically uni

Copper-molybdenum interactions in ruminant nutrition and reproductive physiology: mechanistic insights into growth, digestibility, and follicular development.

The copper-molybdenum-sulfur (Cu-Mo-S) interaction is one of the most important mineral antagonisms in ruminant nutrition because it can induce functional copper deficiency even when dietary copper intake appears adequate. In the rumen, dietary sulfur is reduced to sulfide, which reacts with molybdate to form thiomolybdates. These compounds bind copper within ruminal digesta and, when produced in excess, may also enter the circulation and interfere with systemic copper trafficking and cuproenzyme function. This review critically synthesizes evidence on ruminal thiomolybdate formation, post-abs

Clays as Additives in Ruminant Feed: A Quantitative Meta-Analysis of Their Effects on Enteric Methane, Digestion, Health and Productivity.

Clays are increasingly incorporated as feed additives for ruminants, partly inspired by animals' natural geophagic behaviour. However, their effects on rumen function and productivity remain inconsistent in the literature. This meta-analysis synthesised 39 controlled studies (73 treatment means) to quantitatively evaluate the effects of clay supplementation on fermentation, digestibility, metabolic health, and productivity. Clay supplementation improved rumen fermentation efficiency, as indicated by reductions in methane emissions (-20.45%; p < 0.001) and ammonia-N (-11.51%; p = 0.033), along

Effects of calcium and buffer sources on lactational performance, ruminal fermentation, nutrient digestibility, and metabolism of dairy cows.

The objective was to investigate the effects of calcium and rumen buffer sources on lactational performance, ruminal fermentation, enteric gas emissions, apparent total-tract digestibility of nutrients, and blood variables of lactating dairy cows. A replicated 3 × 3 Latin square design experiment was conducted with 9 primi- and 9 multiparous mid-lactation Holstein cows. Cows were fed the same basal diet, except for the inclusion (as % DMI) of the following minerals: (1) CON, 0.80% limestone and 0.55% NaCl; (2) BICARB, 0.80% limestone and 0.80% NaHCO3; and (3) ARAG, 0.80% aragonite and 0.55% Na

Klason lignin is a nutritionally heterogeneous fraction unsuitable for the prediction of forage neutral-detergent fibre digestibility in ruminants.

Although lignin has been negatively correlated with neutral-detergent fibre (NDF) digestibility (NDFD) in ruminants and used to predict potential extent of NDF digestion of forages, selection of an analysis, Klason lignin (KL) or acid-detergent lignin (ADL), to describe that the nutritionally relevant lignin has not been resolved. Dismissed as an artifact is the difference between KL and ADL (ΔL). A question is whether ΔL influences NDFD. We evaluated the relationships of ΔL, KL and ADL with NDFD in order to determine the nutritionally homogeneous or heterogeneous nature of KL. Data sets from

Comparative omasum anatomy in ruminants: Relationships with natural diet, digestive physiology, and general considerations on allometric investigations.

The omasum is the third forestomach compartment of pecoran ruminants. It is assumed that the re-absorption of fluid present in the forestomach digesta (that facilitates particle sorting, digestion, and harvest of microbes) is its main function, so that less diluted digesta is submitted to enzymatic digestion in the lower digestive tract. Here, we evaluate measures of omasum size (representing 84 ruminant species in the largest data set) against body mass and proxies of the natural diet (%grass) or forestomach physiology (fluid throughput), using phylogenetically controlled models. The origin o

The effects on digestibility and ruminal measures of chemically treated corn stover as a partial replacement for grain in dairy diets.

Alkaline treatment of gramineous crop residues can convert an abundant, minimally utilized, poorly digestible straw into a moderately digestible feedstuff. Given the volatile nature of grain prices, substitution of treated stover for grain was investigated with dairy cows to provide insights on ruminal and digestibility effects of a feed option that makes use of alternative, available resources. The objective of this study was to evaluate changes in diet digestibility and ruminal effects when increasing levels of calcium oxide-treated corn stover (CaOSt) were substituted for corn grain in diet

Silage chop length and hay supplementation on milk yield, chewing activity, and ruminal digestion by dairy cows.

The effects of whole-plant corn silage (CS) particle size and long unprocessed grass hay (LH) supplementation on milk yield, chewing activity, and ruminal digestion in dairy cows were evaluated in 2 experiments. In Experiment 1, corn silage harvested at fine (6 mm; FCS) or coarse (23 mm; CCS) theoretical cut length were fed to 22 lactating Holstein cows. Treatments were 2 total mixed rations containing 58% of dry matter (DM) as FCS or CCS. Diet DM intake tended to be higher in cows fed FCS than those fed CCS (23.4 vs. 22.1 kg/d). However, milk yield and composition, body condition score, and p
