Sustainable Postpartum Hemorrhage Training for Rural Obstetric Nurses in the Absence of Routine Patient Care Experiences.

Critical access birthing units are essential for the well-being of maternal and neonatal patients in rural areas; however, many rural hospitals are closing their birthing units due to a variety of complex factors, including the difficulty of maintaining highly trained staff. These closures worsen the already vast "maternity care deserts" found across much of the rural United States. Postpartum hemorrhage is one of the most common complications during childbirth, but nurses providing care at low-birth-volume hospitals in rural areas often lack routine exposure to postpartum hemorrhage and have

A continuing educational initiative to develop nurses' mental health knowledge and skills in rural and remote areas.

At a time of ever increasing mental health problems in Australian society, the nursing profession is beset by problems of an insufficient workforce specialising in this area. Not only is there a shortage of suitable trained specialist mental health nurses, but undergraduate nursing programs inadequately prepare students for practical mental health nursing. Fewer students are enrolling in mental health nursing, and many nurses are leaving the workforce. A particular problem in rural Australia is that there is a lack of specialist mental health services, and nurses are being increasingly relied

Approaches to urinary incontinence in a rural population: a comparison of physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and family physicians.

BACKGROUND: Although urinary incontinence is a challenge and a burden to older patients, many clinicians fail to query older patients about incontinence symptoms or, even when aware of a problem, fail to diagnose the underlying cause or recommend treatment. We wanted to compare the approaches of physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and family physicians to detection, diagnosis, and initial management of urinary incontinence in older adults seen in rural primary care practices. METHODS: One male and 2 female simulated patients portrayed otherwise healthy patients with urinary incontinenc

Poured Out and Given: The Lived Experience of Self-Care Among Hospice Nurses in Rural Appalachia.

Hospice nurses encounter profound challenges that make self-care both essential and deeply complex. This study explored the lived experience of self-care among hospice nurses using an existential-phenomenological approach. Hospice nursing, characterized by its focus on comfort care and end-of-life support, presents unique emotional, physical, and ethical challenges that often lead to burnout and compassion fatigue. Phenomenological analysis revealed 4 central themes: Threads of Trust: Weaving Meaningful Connections; A Full Heart, an Empty Cup; When Caring Hurts: The Emotional Cost of Hospice N

Improving Rural Nurse Practitioner Knowledge About Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Through Continuing Education.

BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a common androgen-excess disorder in reproductive-aged women, is often a missed diagnosis. Rural nurse practitioners (NPs) need to be able to diagnose and provide basic management for PCOS. This study's objective was to determine whether a continuing education program about PCOS would improve NPs' knowledge about PCOS. METHOD: A pretest-posttest design was used. Forty-eight participants attending a regional NP conference completed a pretest before a continuing education presentation about PCOS. Afterward, 43 participants completed an identical pos

From isolation to connection: A nursing model for AI-enhanced mental health crisis management in rural Chinese adolescent communities.

This paper presents a conceptual nursing model that integrates artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to enhance mental health crisis management for rural Chinese adolescent communities. Addressing the critical gap between isolation and therapeutic connection, this nursing-led framework responds to escalating mental health crises among rural Chinese adolescents, characterized by elevated suicide rates and severely limited access to professional psychiatric nursing support. The model positions psychiatric nurses as central coordinators who utilize AI-enhanced tools for early crisis detection

Cancer genetics in rural primary care: a pilot nurse-led service using a new mobile IT system.

Somerset has a relatively high incidence of cancer. The county is very rural with pockets of deprivation and sizeable areas of poor access to services. The Cancer Plan advocates early identification of cancer and identified the genetic revolution as having the potential to predict risk, and detect and diagnose cancer early. This innovative Public Health led pilot takes specialist cancer genetics services into primary care. It explores a new service model that is patient focused, provides services close to home and reduces hospital visits and pressure on genetics departments. People who believe
