From April 2000 through February 2001, children in the 25 selected clusters were enumerated in a door-to-door survey and examined at a rural eye center in the district. The examination included visual acuity measurements, ocular motility evaluation, retinoscopy and autorefr

METHOD: A random sample of 1008 adults in rural eastern North Carolina completed a survey by telephone, which included questions about experiences of depersonalization or derealization in the past year. Demographic information was gathered on all responde

Prevalence of asymptomatic electrocardiographic abnormalities in a rural population.

To determine the prevalence of various electrocardiographic (ECG) abnormalities among asymptomatic individuals in a rural population of India we performed a 12-lead ECG during a comprehensive cardiovascular survey in three randomly selected villages in Rajasthan. Twenty four of 3148 individuals with a past diagnosis or symptoms suggestive of coronary heart disease (CHD) were excluded. ECG of 3124 persons (males 1965, females 1159) were analysed and classified according to the WHO-Minnesota Code. The prevalence rate/1000 of Q-waves was 8.6 (males 8.7, females 8.6) and ST-T wave changes was 17.0

The impact of schistosomiasis among rural populations in Liberia.

Human infection with Schistosoma haematobium and/or Schistosoma mansoni is known to be widespread in central Liberia, but no information is available about its clinical manifestations or its significance for public health. Details of a cross-sectional morbidity study are reported. A sample from hospital out-patients and samples from 3 villages situated in areas with different transmission patterns (lack of transmission, transmission of only S. haematobium and transmission of both S. haematobium and S. mansoni) were examined. All 184 individuals were examined by standardized case history, clini

Early warnings for suicide attempt among Chinese rural population.

OBJECTIVE: This study was to explore the main influencing factors of attempted suicide and establish an early warning model, so as to put forward prevention strategies for attempted suicide. METHOD: Data came from a large-scale case-control epidemiological survey. A sample of 659 serious suicide attempters was randomly recruited from 13 rural counties in China. Each case was matched by a community control for gender, age, and residence location. Face to face interviews were conducted for all the cases and controls with the same structured questionnaire. Ocular injury: Prevalence in different rural population of Bangladesh.

This population based cross-sectional study was conducted on 8283 persons of all ages in five districts, selected conveniently, to assess the magnitude of ocular injuries, their causes and consequences in rural Bangladesh. Six Upazilas from five districts and from each Upazila one Union was selected randomly. One village, the ultimate cluster, was then selected conveniently from each Union. All people (n = 8283) in the 8 villages were then surveyed. Out of 8283 population (ranging from 1-120 years) surveyed, 167(2%) had history and/or evidence of past ocular trauma with a yearly incidence of 6

Astigmatism in underserved rural areas: a population based study.

PURPOSE: Studying the prevalence of astigmatism and its related factors in underprivileged rural areas in Iran. METHODS: Using random cluster sampling, two rural areas in the north and southwest of Iran were randomly selected, and 3851 persons over 1 year of age were invited to the study. In addition to recording demographics, retinoscopic refraction was conducted using baseline auto-refraction results. The prevalence of astigmatism was determined based on cylinder error cut-off points of 0.50 dioptre (D), 1.00, 2.00 and 3.00 D. Multiple logistic regression was used to assess variables' relat

Vitamin D status in a rural postmenopausal female population.

BACKGROUND: Inadequate vitamin D nutritional status is increasingly recognized as common in North American and European populations, but the extent of the shortfall and the parameters of the distribution for populations of interest remain uncertain. PURPOSE: To report the distribution of values for serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] in a population of rural postmenopausal women, together with quantification of factors related to vitamin D status. SETTING: Nine largely agrarian counties in eastern Nebraska (approximately 41 degrees N). PARTICIPANTS: A population-based sample of 1,179 women

Work-related injuries in a rural emergency department population.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the spectrum of work-related injury evaluated in a rural ED population. METHODS: An ED-based injury surveillance system (EDBISS) was used to collect injury data for all ED patients seen over a 1-year period. A patient was classified as injured if his or her record contained an ED log injury code, an ICD-9 N-code between 800 and 995 in any diagnostic field, an E-code, or an entry in the trauma registry. An injury was considered work-related if the patient reported that the injury had occurred while at work. RESULTS: Work-related injuries accounted for 1,539/12,321 (12.5

Prevalence of congenital heart disease in rural population of Himachal - A population-based study.

AIM: There is no community-based study about the prevalence of congenital heart disease (CHD) in Himachal; hence, we undertook this study. METHODS AND RESULTS: A population-based survey was done in four villages of different districts of Himachal Pradesh. In total, 1882 persons were examined. 909 were male and 973 were female. There were 12 cases of CHD in the population (6.3/1000): four of these were male (33.3%) and 8 were female (66.6%). Mean age of these patients was 19.5±11.07 years. Atrial septal defect (ASD) was the commonest lesion followed by ventricular septal defect (VSD). CONCLUS

Comparing incidence of vasculitis between farming, rural and urban population: A population-based study.

OBJECTIVE: Vasculitis often poses a significant burden on individuals, their families and the health care system. Understanding its epidemiology can aid in facilitating timely interventions. We present a province-wide population study comparing the 1) incidence of vasculitis amongst farmers, rural-non farmers and urban residents, 2) the use of health services and 3) all-cause mortality rates across the three cohorts. METHODS: The groups were randomly selected on the basis of provincial health data. Criteria for ascertaining vasculitis cases included either one hospital admission, two physicia

Emergency General Surgery Outcomes for Rural Patients: A Comparative Analysis of Rural, Micropolitan, and Metropolitan Populations.

BackgroundApproximately 20% of the U.S. population resides in rural areas where health care access is limited by physician shortages. This presents a disparity in emergency general surgery where timely intervention is essential. This study aims to evaluate the impact of rurality on outcomes of emergency general surgery patients transferred to a metropolitan center.MethodsA retrospective single-center cohort study of 1189 patients who underwent non-traumatic emergent exploratory laparotomies. Patient rurality was determined by Rural-Urban Commuting Area (RUCA) codes which categorize patients as
