Incidence of Kaposi's sarcoma and mycosis fungoides in the United States including Puerto Rico, 1973-81.

The incidence of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) was examined with the use of data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program of the National Cancer Institute. KS is a manifestation of the recent epidemic of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) that has occurred particularly among homosexual men. The incidence of KS in 1973-79 was found to be higher (0.29 male and 0.07 female cases/100,000/yr) than is usually cited for the pre-AIDS KS incidence rates. Collectively, the 9 SEER registries in the United States showed only a slight increase in the incidence of KS between 1973-7

A novel nomogram based on cardia invasion and chemotherapy to predict postoperative overall survival of gastric cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to establish and externally validate a nomogram to predict the 3- and 5-year overall survival (OS) of gastric cancer (GC) patients after surgical resection. METHODS: A total of 6543 patients diagnosed with primary GC during 2004-2016 were collected from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. We grouped patients diagnosed during 2004-2012 into a training set (n = 4528) and those diagnosed during 2013-2016 into an external validation set (n = 2015). A nomogram was constructed after univariate and multivariate analysis. Performance was evaluated by

Etiologic insights from surface adjustment of colorectal carcinoma incidences: an analysis of the U.S. SEER data 2000-2004.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The subsite-specific comparison of the incidence of carcinoma within the colorectum is complicated because the mucosal surface, and therefore the amount of epithelial cells at risk, varies among the subsites. The aim of this study was to provide the subsite-specific estimates of the colon mucosal surface and the mucosal surface-adjusted carcinoma incidence estimates of colon subsites that allow a more valid comparison of the subsite-specific incidences. METHODS: We extracted subsite-specific incidence rates of colorectal carcinoma from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and

Cancer trends in a population at risk of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

Recent case reports have suggested that the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) may be associated with cancers other than Kaposi's sarcoma (KS). We have used the population-based registries of the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program to examine these relationships on a statistical basis by comparing the morbidity odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for specific cancer sites in pre- and post-AIDS time periods. Among never-married 20- to 49-year-old men, a surrogate group representing homosexual men, significant increases in the morbidity OR's for KS betw

Incidence and survival of patients with primary gastrointestinal melanoma: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Primary gastrointestinal melanoma (PGIM) has received more attention because of its inferior prognosis. Less is known about the incidence and survival rate of PGIM. METHODS: PGIM data were extracted from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. The incidence was estimated by age, sex, race, and primary site. Trends in incidence were described as annual percent change (APC). Cancer-specific survival (CSS) and overall survival (OS) rates were estimated and compared using log-rank tests. Cox regression analyses were performed to identify independent prognostic

Development of a prognostic nomogram for patients with malignant mesothelioma with bone metastasis.

Malignant mesothelioma (MM) is a rare aggressive tumor, and bone metastasis often occurs in later stages of this disease. This study aimed to establish a nomogram to predict the prognosis of bone metastasis of patients with MM. Data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database were screened and retrieved. This study included 311 patients with MM with bone metastases. Prognostic factors were analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox proportional hazards model. A nomogram for overall survival (OS) was established and evaluated using statistically significant prognostic fact

Longitude Position in a Time Zone and Cancer Risk in the United States.

Background: Circadian disruption is a probable human carcinogen. From the eastern to western border of a time zone, social time is equal, whereas solar time is progressively delayed, producing increased discrepancies between individuals' social and biological circadian time. Accordingly, western time zone residents experience greater circadian disruption and may be at an increased risk of cancer. Methods: We examined associations between the position in a time zone and age-standardized county-level incidence rates for total cancers combined and 23 specific cancers by gender using the data of th

Rising Incidence of Non-Cardia Gastric Cancer among Young Women in the United States, 2000-2018: A Time-Trend Analysis Using the USCS Database.

INTRODUCTION: Although the global incidence of non-cardia gastric cancer (NCGC) is decreasing, there are limited data on sex-specific incidence in the United States. This study aimed to investigate time trends of NCGC from the SEER database to externally validate findings in a SEER-independent national database, and to further assess trends among subpopulations. METHODS: Age-adjusted incidence rates of NCGC were obtained from the SEER database from 2000 to 2018. We used joinpoint models to calculate average annual percentage change (AAPC) to determine sex-specific trends among older (≥55 year

Clinical features distinguish childhood chordoma associated with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) from chordoma in the general paediatric population.

BACKGROUND: Chordoma, an age-dependent rare cancer, arises from notochordal remnants. Fewer than 5% of chordomas occur in children. Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is an autosomal dominant neurocutaneous syndrome characterised by abnormal tissue growths in multiple organ systems. Reports of chordoma in children with TSC suggest that TSC1 and TSC2 mutations may contribute to chordoma aetiology. METHODS: To determine whether the 10 TSC-associated childhood chordomas reported in the literature are representative of chordoma in the general paediatric population, the authors compared age at diagn

The effect of multiple primary rules on cancer incidence rates and trends.

PURPOSE: An examination of multiple primary cancers can provide insight into the etiologic role of genes, the environment, and prior cancer treatment on a cancer patient's risk of developing a subsequent cancer. Different rules for registering multiple primary cancers (MP) are used by cancer registries throughout the world making data comparisons difficult. METHODS: We evaluated the effect of SEER and IARC/IACR rules on cancer incidence rates and trends using data from the SEER Program. We estimated age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) and trends (1975-2011) for the top 26 cancer categories

Reclassified the phenotypes of cancer types and construct a nomogram for predicting bone metastasis risk: A pan-cancer analysis.

BACKGROUND: Numerous of models have been developed to predict the bone metastasis (BM) risk; however, due to the variety of cancer types, it is difficult for clinicians to use these models efficiently. We aimed to perform the pan-cancer analysis to create the cancer classification system for BM, and construct the nomogram for predicting the BM risk. METHODS: Cancer patients diagnosed between 2010 and 2018 in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database were included. Unsupervised hierarchical clustering analysis was performed to create the BM prevalence-based cancer classif

Predictability: A new distinguishing feature of cancer?

Cancer is a consequence of stochastic (mutations, genetic, and epigenetic instabilities) and deterministic (evolutionary bottlenecks) events. Stochastic events are less amenable to prediction, whereas deterministic events yield more predictable results. The relative contribution of these opposing forces determines cancer predictability, which affects the accuracy of our prognostic predictions and is critical for treatment planning. In this study, we attempted to quantify predictability. The predictability index (PI) was defined as the median overall-survival at any time point divided by the st

Scalable proximal methods for cause-specific hazard modeling with time-varying coefficients.

Survival modeling with time-varying coefficients has proven useful in analyzing time-to-event data with one or more distinct failure types. When studying the cause-specific etiology of breast and prostate cancers using the large-scale data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program, we encountered two major challenges that existing methods for estimating time-varying coefficients cannot tackle. First, these methods, dependent on expanding the original data in a repeated measurement format, result in formidable time and memory consumption as the sample size escalates to
