Dissociated palsy of vertical saccades: loss of voluntary and visually guided saccades with preservation of reflexive vestibular quick phases.

A patient with a diencephalic infarct displayed a persistent palsy of voluntary and visually guided vertical saccades with preserved vertical quick phases of vestibular nystagmus on magnetic search coil oculography. Vertical smooth pursuit had very low velocity in both directions without catch-up saccades. Vertical and torsional vestibulo-ocular reflex gains were normal. Preservation of vertical and torsional quick phases signifies integrity of the rostral interstitial nucleus of the medial longitudinal fasciculus (riMLF). This case is the first to provide evidence that disruption of descendin

Distraction by auditory novelty during reading: Evidence for disruption in saccade planning, but not saccade execution.

Novel or unexpected sounds that deviate from an otherwise repetitive sequence of the same sound cause behavioural distraction. Recent work has suggested that distraction also occurs during reading as fixation durations increased when a deviant sound was presented at the fixation onset of words. The present study tested the hypothesis that this increase in fixation durations occurs due to saccadic inhibition. This was done by manipulating the temporal onset of sounds relative to the fixation onset of words in the text. If novel sounds cause saccadic inhibition, they should be more distracting w

Cognitive Control of Saccadic Selection and Inhibition from within the Core Cortical Saccadic Network.

The ability to select the task-relevant stimulus for a saccadic eye movement, while inhibiting saccades to task-irrelevant stimuli, is crucial for active vision. Here, we present a novel saccade-contingent behavioral paradigm and investigate the neural basis of the central cognitive functions underpinning such behavior, saccade selection, saccade inhibition, and saccadic choice, in female and male human participants. The paradigm allows for exceptionally well-matched contrasts, with task demands formalized with stochastic accumulation-to-threshold models. Using fMRI, we replicated the core cor

The Effects of Short-Lasting Anti-Saccade Training in Homonymous Hemianopia with and without Saccadic Adaptation.

Homonymous Visual Field Defects (HVFD) are common following stroke and can be highly debilitating for visual perception and higher level cognitive functions such as exploring visual scene or reading a text. Rehabilitation using oculomotor compensatory methods with automatic training over a short duration (~15 days) have been shown as efficient as longer voluntary training methods (>1 month). Here, we propose to evaluate and compare the effect of an original HVFD rehabilitation method based on a single 15 min voluntary anti-saccades task (AS) toward the blind hemifield, with automatic sensorimo

Enhanced saccadic control in young people with Tourette syndrome despite slowed pro-saccades.

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by motor and vocal tics. Tics are repetitive and uncontrolled behaviours that have been associated with basal ganglia dysfunction. We investigated saccadic eye movements in a group of young people with TS but without co-morbid ADHD. Participants performed two tasks. One required them to perform only pro-saccade responses (pure pro-saccade task). The other involved shifting, unpredictably, between executing pro- and anti-saccades (mixed saccade task). We show that in the mixing saccade task, the TS group makes significantly f

Frontotemporal dementia patients exhibit deficits in predictive saccades.

Prediction and time estimation are all but required for motor function in everyday life. In the context of eye movements, for instance, they allow predictive saccades and eye re-acceleration in anticipation of a target re-appearance. While the neural pathways involved are not fully understood, it is known that the frontal lobe plays an important role. As such, neurological disorders that affect it, such as frontotemporal (FTD) dementia, are likely to induce deficits in such movements. In this work, we study the performances of frontotemporal dementia patients in an oculomotor task designed to

Smooth Pursuit and Saccades after Sport-Related Concussion.

Smooth pursuit eye movements (SPEMs) and saccadic eye movements are both commonly impaired following sport-related concussion (SRC). Typical oculomotor assessments measure individual eye movements in a series of restrictive tests designed to isolate features such as response times. These measures lack ecological validity for athletes because athletes are adept at simple tasks designed for the general population. Yet, because eye movement metrics are sensitive and well-characterized neuroanatomically, it would be valuable to test whether athletes exhibit abnormal eye movements with more challen

Heading representations in primates are compressed by saccades.

Perceptual illusions help to understand how sensory signals are decoded in the brain. Here we report that the opposite approach is also applicable, i.e., results from decoding neural activity from monkey extrastriate visual cortex correctly predict a hitherto unknown perceptual illusion in humans. We record neural activity from monkey medial superior temporal (MST) and ventral intraparietal (VIP) area during presentation of self-motion stimuli and concurrent reflexive eye movements. A heading-decoder performs veridically during slow eye movements. During fast eye movements (saccades), however,

Physiology and pathology of saccades and gaze holding.

INTRODUCTION: Foveation is the fundamental requirement for clear vision. Saccades rapidly shift the gaze to the interesting target while gaze holding ensures foveation of the desired object. PURPOSE: We will review the pertinent physiology of saccades and gaze holding and their pathophysiology leading to saccadic oscillations, slow saccades, saccadic dysmetria, and nystagmus. SUMMARY: Motor commands for saccades are generated at multiple levels of the neuraxis. The frontal and parietal eye field send saccadic commands to the superior colliculus. Latter then projects to the brain-stem saccadi

Modification of compensatory saccades after aVOR gain recovery.

The recruitment of extra-vestibular mechanisms to assist a deficient angular vestibulo-ocular reflex (aVOR) during ipsilesional head rotations is well established and includes saccades of reduced latency that occur in the direction of the lesioned aVOR, termed compensatory saccades (CS). Less well known is the functional relevance of these unique saccades. Here we report a 42 y.o. male diagnosed with right unilateral vestibular hypofunction due to vestibular neuronitis who underwent a vestibular rehabilitation program including gaze stabilization exercises. After three weeks, he had a signific

Functional neuroanatomy of smooth pursuit and predictive saccades.

We used PET to study differences in cerebral blood flow (CBF) in smooth pursuit, predictive saccades and fixation. Eye movements were monitored in the scanner. Compared with fixation, pursuit and predictive saccades activated a network of highly similar areas, including frontal eye fields, supplementary eye fields, V5 and medial cuneus. Our findings are consistent with non-human primate studies that suggest that pursuit and saccades are controlled by similar and adjacent neural areas. Pursuit was associated with greater activation of caudate than saccades, suggesting a role for basal ganglia i

[Unilateral paralysis of saccades caused by pontine tuberculoma].

A unilateral lesion of the paramedian pontine reticular formation results in an ipsilateral laterality paralysis with abolition of all saccadic movements directed to the side of the lesion. It is generally accepted that the oculocephalic reflex alone enables the eyes to be deviated beyond the median line of the affected side. In the present case of a paramedian pontine tuberculoma, a paralysis of laterality in accordance with the above mentioned opinion was observed initially. Treatment led to recovery of an ipsilateral pursuit of normal amplitude, contrasting with the persistent abolition of

[The effect of illumination on involuntary eye saccades].

A study was made of the influence of sudden illumination micromovements of the eyes. Sudden contour illumination of the eye by a 15 degrees field with a crossing in the centre and a brightness of 100 nit reduced the amplitude of involuntary saccades and their frequency. The effect was particularly distinct with preliminary recording of the eye micromovement in complete darkness without a fixation point. In the case of fixation of a stationary point with one eye and of illumination of the other, the effect was also manifest, but it was less pronounced. During illumination of the eye with diffus

Saccade Strategy in Alternating Exotropia.

Patient with exotropia frequently alternate fixation, looking at something with one eye and then switching their attention to acquire a new target with the other eye. Which eye informs the brain about the location of the new target? To address this issue, we presented targets dichoptically to 16 exotropes that were visible to the fixating eye, the deviated eye, or to both eyes. We then compared the subjects' choice of eye for target acquisition with the organization of their suppression scotomas. There was a correspondence between suppression scotoma maps and the eye used to acquire peripheral

Saccadic intrusions: review and update.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This work reviews saccadic intrusions focusing on recent developments in pathophysiology and treatment. RECENT FINDINGS: Saccadic intrusions have been recognized as features of oculomotor apraxia type 2 and neuromyelitis optica. Novel fixation instabilities have been identified such as 'staircase' square wave jerks, or the pervasive ocular microtremor seen in Parkinson's disease. Although evidence supports a network underlying the pathophysiology of square wave jerks involving cerebral hemispheres, subcortex, brainstem and cerebellum, the debate regarding the pathogenesis o

Saccadic impairments in Huntington's disease.

Huntington's disease (HD), a progressive neurological disorder involving degeneration in basal ganglia structures, leads to abnormal control of saccadic eye movements. We investigated whether saccadic impairments in HD (N = 9) correlated with clinical disease severity to determine the relationship between saccadic control and basal ganglia pathology. HD patients and age/sex-matched controls performed various eye movement tasks that required the execution or suppression of automatic or voluntary saccades. In the "immediate" saccade tasks, subjects were instructed to look either toward (pro-sacc

Cognitive processes in saccade generation.

The analysis of saccades offers an opportunity to study a number of different cognitive processes, such as visuospatial attention, working memory, and volitional conflict. A study of saccades in patients with visuospatial hemineglect, who performed a visual search task, showed repeated fixations on targets previously discovered, yet they often failed to retain the information that a particular target had previously been discovered. High-resolution structural brain scanning showed that this abnormality was due either to a lesion in the right intraparietal sulcus or the right inferior frontal lo

[Saccadic sinusoidal tracking test].

This paper introduces a new method of ENG-Saccadic sinusoidal tracking test (SSTT). In 4 of the 55 cases with peripheral vestibular lesions, the results were abnormal. But among 50 cases with central lesions, 40 cases were abnormal. In 50 control cases, no abnormalities were found. The results showed that SSTT might be of great value in differential diagnosis of central Lesions.

Saccadic function in spasmodic torticollis.

Twelve patients with idiopathic spasmodic torticollis were compared with 19 normal controls on tests of saccadic eye movements thought to depend upon normal basal ganglia function. The patients were able to make random, predictive, remembered, and self-paced saccades equally as well as control subjects. This suggests that those parts of the basal ganglia which may be damaged in spasmodic torticollis, are separate from pathways responsible for the normal initiation and execution of saccades.

Comparing masking and habituation roles in saccadic omission of stimuli optimized for intra-saccadic vision.

Saccadic eye movements produce a rapid visual motion stimulation that remains unseen, a phenomenon known as saccadic omission. We have recently suggested that the sensorimotor system selectively habituates to, and thereby omits, the visual contingencies of saccades. In previous studies, a passive mechanism of saccadic omission was proposed in which the post-saccadic image serves as a backward mask to hide intra-saccadic motion from awareness. Here, we directly compared these theories using stimuli optimized for intra-saccadic vision: high-speed gratings that become visible only during the exec
