OBJECTIVE: Anatomical variations in the sacrococcygeal region can lead to complications such as accidental dural puncture during caudal block. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of sacrococcygeal anatomical variations using ultrasonography and to evaluate the necessity of ultrasound guidance in sacral block procedures.
METHODS: Ultrasound findings of sacrococcygeal anatomy were validated against magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A detailed ultrasound protocol was subsequently applied to assess sacrococcygeal anatomy in pediatric patients.
RESULTS: Ultrasound and MRI demonstrated st

Four cases of extrarenal nephrogenic proliferation in the sacrococcygeal region with spinal dysraphism are presented. In two of the cases, features of Wilm's or incipient Wilm's tumor were present. The previous literature on sacrococcygeal nephrogenic tissue is reviewed, and the impact of these findings on the histogenesis of extrarenal sacrococcygeal Wilm's tumor is discussed.

Chordomas are malignant tumors with lobulated structure which usually consists of vacuolated physaliferous cells in a mucoid stroma (Enzinger et al. 1969). These cells originate from remnants of the chorda dorsalis. Most chordomas are located either at the end of the vertebral column, i.e., in the sacrococcygeal region or at the base of the skull near the sphenooccipital synchondrosis. More than half of all tumors are located in the sacrococcygeal region. In contrast to most cases of sacrococcygeal chordomas which show a predominant presacral tumor infiltration we report on a patient suffering

Immature malignant sacrococcygeal teratoma (SCT) is a rare tumor, deriving from the three germinal layers and is found in the sacrococcygeal region. It is the most frequent site of teratomas in the fetus. A nut-brown, solid tumor with cystic areas with a ten-cm diameter is reported in the sacrococcygeal region of a female fetus of 23 weeks and with a weight of 308 g. The ultrasound and pathology evaluations revealed characteristics of an immature malignant SCT. The incidence of this tumor type is one in 35,000 to 40,000 live births and females are four times more likely to be affected than mal

A case of sacrococcygeal chordoma in a 9-year-old boy is presented. The symptoms at presentation were pain in both legs and sacrococcygeal region for the last two years that increased in the last four weeks irradiating mainly to the left leg. X-ray and CT scan examinations of the lumbar region revealed an expansive process in the coccygeal region with multiple calcifications and a partially eroded coccyx. There was no invasion of the retroperitoneum and regional lymph nodes. A biopsy was performed and showed cords and nests of cells with large cytoplasm, sometimes vacuolated, nuclei with moder

A rare case of sacrococcygeal dermal sinus suffering from relapsing meningitis is presented. In addition, deference of clinical figure and pathology between sacrococcygeal region and other regions are discussed. A 10 -month-old boy was suffering from relapsing meningitis. Spinal MRI was performed to find occult spinal dysraphism because he had a pit on his hip. The MRI revealed sacrococcygeal dermal sinus. He received surgical resection of dermal sinus based on this findings. Interestingly, different from other dermal sinuses, the dermal sinus runs to caudal direction, and was fused filum term

Sacrococcygeal dislocation commonly occurs after trauma and may cause coccydynia. Although most cases of coccydynia after sacrococcygeal dislocation resolve with conservative and medical treatment, surgery is also an option with refractory pain. Sacral erector spinae plane block (SESPB) is a novel approach for sacrococcygeal procedures and may be effective in the postoperative pain of this region. In this article, we present a case of a successful median approach SESPB for postoperative pain management following coccyx removal in a patient with sacrococcygeal dislocation. In conclusion, SESPB

Sacrococcygeal teratoma is the most common congenital neoplasm in neonates. We came across a post term (42 weeks) newborn baby girl delivered by normal vaginal route. The baby presented with a large soft, cystic mass over the sacrococcygeal region. Radiological examination showed a soft tissue mass with variegated appearance. Complete excision of the mass was done. Histopathological examination revealed the mass to be a mature sacrococcygeal teratoma with the extremely uncommon finding of a complete adrenal gland within the teratoma sac. Sacrococcygeal teratoma is a component of a continuum wi

Background/Objectives: Teratomas of the sacrococcygeal region are rare, but the most common tumors found in fetuses. They develop from the three germ layers-mesoderm, ectoderm, and endoderm-and occur at a rate of 1 in 27,000 to 1 in 40,000, with a fourfold higher incidence in female fetuses. 63.9-74% of sacrococcygeal teratomas are detected prenatally, most often in the second trimester. Methods: This study reports the case of a woman in her second pregnancy at 29 weeks and 2 days gestation who was incidentally diagnosed with tumor-like lesion in the sacrococcygeal region of fetus. The clinica

INTRODUCTION: Sacrococcygeal teratoma is commonly a benign tumor that arises in the sacrum and base of the coccyx. It has an incidence of 1 in 40 000 and a female-to-male ratio of 4:1. Computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are key to diagnosis and surgical resection is the definite treatment.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 10-year-old female presented with a gradually progressive sacral swelling since birth associated with fever, pain, and discharge from the swelling for 2 weeks. On examination, there was an approx. 10 × 11 cm mass in the sacral region with a pus point and signs

BACKGROUND: Recurrence of the sacrococcygeal hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) can significantly be reduced by invasive local excision of all the abscess, sinuses, and scars which often result in large defects on this region. Although a number of surgical procedures have been described, closure of large sacrococcygeal defects resulting from excision of extensive HS still remains a challenge.
PURPOSE: Here, we present the use of triangular closure technique as a new alternative in surgical treatment of extensive HS of sacrococcygeal region.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: For more than 4 years, triangular

Squamous cell carcinoma is a rare malignancy in the pediatric age group. We describe a 12-year-old boy with squamous cell carcinoma of the sacrococcygeal region. This is the first reported case of that pathology in this region. The patient was treated with surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy and is now free of disease 3 years later. The etiology of sacrococcygeal squamous cell carcinoma is unclear, and its possible pathophysiology in relation to its location is discussed.

Sacrococcygeal teratomas may arise in association with regional developmental errors affecting the caudal embryonic segments and may originate within lumbosacral lipomas. It is therefore possible that sacrococcygeal teratomas and lumbosacral lipomas represent related disorders of embryogenesis. Accordingly, the authors report the cases of 2 siblings. The first child (female) was born with a mature Altman Type III sacrococcygeal teratoma that was resected when she was a neonate. Subsequently, a younger brother was found soon after birth to have an L-4-level lipomyelomeningocele and underwent pa

This case illustrates a pitfall associated with F-18 FDG imaging. We present the images of a 57-year-old woman with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma that shows intense accumulation of F-18 FDG in a sacrococcygeal pilonidal sinus that could indicate a lymphomatous involvement from a primary disease. MRI showed a well-defined sinus tract from skin to the sacrococcygeal region corresponding to the F-18 FDG uptake. She did not have any symptoms of a sacrococcygeal pilonidal sinus such as discharge, swelling or pain. There was no visible opening of the sinus tract on the skin. Pilonidal sinus is commonly a h

BACKGROUND: Sacrococcygeal teratoma is one of the most common congenital tumors in newborns and infancy. The incidence is 1 per 20,000-40,000 live births. Ultrasonography is an optimal method for prenatal screening and diagnosis of fetal sacrococcygeal teratoma. MRI can be used to assist in the diagnosis. However, sacrococcygeal teratoma in the twin pregnancy is rare.
CASE PRESENTATION: We reported a case of one twin with sacrococcygeal teratoma in dichorionic-diamniotic twin pregnancy. One twin with sacrococcygeal teratoma was diagnosed at the second trimester by ultrasonic examination and an
