The "Safe Sex" Conundrum: Anticipated Stigma From Sexual Partners as a Barrier to PrEP Use Among Substance Using MSM Engaging in Transactional Sex.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is efficacious for HIV prevention when taken consistently; however, barriers to PrEP use are poorly understood among individuals who could benefit from PrEP, including men who have sex with men (MSM) who engage in transactional sex (i.e., sex exchanged for money or drugs). Two hundred and thirty-seven HIV-uninfected, PrEP-naive MSM reporting concurrent substance dependence and sexual risk completed a questionnaire on PrEP use barriers. Barriers to PrEP use for MSM who engaged in recent transactional sex (22 %) versus those who had not were compared using an ecol

The dilemma of safe sex and having children: challenges facing HIV sero-discordant couples in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Sixty percent of new HIV infections in Uganda occur in stable relationships between HIV discordant couples. Given the importance of fertility in Uganda, we hypothesized that unsafe sexual practices may be used to found a family/replace a dead child. Thus, we explored sexual practices to understand to what extent these are influenced by the desire to have children and the implications for HIV transmission among discordant couples. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of 114 HIV discordant couples in Kampala, and in-depth interviews with 15 purposively selected couples. Quantitative da

Exploring What Influences Heterosexual College Men and the Practice of Safe Sex: The Power of Stigma and Community.

The college student population is among the highest risk group for contracting sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as gonorrhea, chlamydia, and HIV. Safe sex practices, which are intended to mitigate risks associated with sexually transmitted infections, are often negated in the population of heterosexual college students. Historically, research on safe sex practices has shown that the burden of behavior change and the focus on educational efforts historically fall onto the female population. There is little published on how safe sex education for males impacts attitudes and behaviors

The challenge of promoting safe sex at sites where persons meet new sex partners in Jamaica: results of the Kingston PLACE randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether a site-based Priorities for Local AIDS Control Efforts (PLACE) HIV prevention intervention in Kingston, Jamaica increased condom use among persons with new or multiple sex partners. METHODS: A total of 147 sites where persons go to meet new sex partners were grouped into 50 geographic clusters and randomized to receive or not receive a multilevel PLACE prevention intervention. Baseline cross-sectional surveys of sites and patrons at sites were conducted in 2005 to determine the nature of social activities at sites to better plan the intervention and to ensure t

"When you carry condoms all the boys think you want it": negotiating competing discourses about safe sex.

With the advent of HIV, sexual health campaigns and formal sex education in schools have worked to instil the concept of safe sex into the collective minds of Australia's youth. However the concept in its present guise is a fairly limited one. We argue in this paper that the predominant emphasis in education programmes on safe sex as condom use may be counter-productive for some young heterosexuals for two reasons. First, this strategy is male-focused and may not extrapolate well to young women who face special risks around pregnancy and rigid societal gender norms which govern sexual behaviou

Can oral sex be performed safely among men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women in Bangladesh? Challenges, complexities and the way forward.

INTRODUCTION: There is currently ample research and intervention initiatives addressing anal sex and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among gender and sexually diverse people (i.e., men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women). However, oral sex and oral STIs are not prioritized to the same extent, despite their concerning implications. This article aimed to delineate the underlying contexts of unprotected oral sex and the management challenges of oral STIs. METHODOLOGY: This qualitative study constituted 30 in-depth interviews, 14 focus group discussions, and 10 key-informant

Repeat testing for chlamydia trachomatis, a "safe approach" to unsafe sex? a qualitative exploration among youth in Stockholm.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia trachomatis testing is offered to youth in Sweden, through a network of Youth Health Clinics, free at the point of care, in an attempt to bring down the prevalence and incidence of the infection. Nevertheless, infections rates have continued to rise during the past two decades and re-testing rates among youth for Chlamydia trachomatis has been reported to be high in Stockholm County. A few literature reports suggest that testing for sexually transmitted infections and the test result itself can have an undesirable impact on the sexual behaviour for the individual, i.e. in

Why Sexual Choking Is Not as Safe as You Think: A Call to Action from Sex Researchers and Kink Educators.

This is a synthesis of the research area and issues involving sexual choking, followed by calls to action based on the synthesis. We describe the health risks associated with sexual choking, which is often performed as a form of strangulation, along with its growing popularity in at least the Australia, Iceland, Italy, New Zealand, United Kingdom, and United States. Beginning with a clarification of the often-obfuscated terminology, this paper describes various ways that people are exposed to the practice of sexual choking. Our team identified social media, online pornography, and other popula

Female Sex and Supine Proximal Lumbar Lordosis Are Associated With the Size of the LLIF "Safe Zone" at L4-L5.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective chart review. OBJECTIVE: Identify demographic and sagittal alignment parameters that are independently associated with femoral nerve position at the L4-L5 disk space. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Iatrogenic femoral nerve or lumbar plexus injury during lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF) can result in neurological complications. The LLIF "safe zone" is the anterior half to two third of the disk space. However, femoral nerve position varies and is inconsistently identifiable on magnetic resonance imaging. The safe zone is also narrowest at L4-L5. METHODS: An anal

Identifying best practices for "Safe Harbor" legislation to protect child sex trafficking victims: Decriminalization alone is not sufficient.

Several states have recently enacted "Safe Harbor" laws to redirect child victims of commercial sexual exploitation and child sex trafficking from the criminal justice system and into the child welfare system. No comprehensive studies of Safe Harbor law implementation exist. The nine state Safe Harbor laws enacted by 2012 were analyzed to guide state legislators, health professionals, law enforcement agents, child welfare providers, and other responders to the commercial sexual exploitation of children on the development and implementation of state Safe Harbor laws. The authors conducted 32 se

The need for family planning and safe abortion services among women sex workers seeking STI care in Cambodia.

In Cambodia, clinics established for the prevention and management of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in women sex workers do not address other reproductive health services. The aim of this study was to assess the need for more comprehensive sexual and reproductive health services for women sex workers in Cambodia. In January 2000, relevant documents were reviewed, interviews with key informants carried out and group interviews with women sex workers conducted. Medical records from women sex workers were also reviewed and some data collected prospectively in one government STI clinic. I

[Effect of a safe-sex campaign on women attending a clinic of venereology. Sex behavior and prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases in women examined at the Venereaklinik in Copenhagen in 1984 and 1988].

Consecutive female patients attending the Copenhagen Venereal Disease Clinic were interviewed about sexual behaviour in 1984 (981 women) and in 1988 (684 women). Details of symptoms, age at coitarche, number of sexual partners, contraceptive methods, and obstetric history were recorded together with the results of the venereological examination. A substantially higher proportion of women used condoms in 1988 (51%) than in 1984 (11%), but otherwise the safe sex campaigns had had a limited effect on the sexual behaviour in this group of women until 1988. The prevalence of gonorrhea decreased sig

It is more than sex and clothes: Culturally safe services for older lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people.

This paper outlines the development of culturally safe services for older lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people. It draws on a framework for cultural safety, developed in New Zealand which incorporates an understanding of how history, culture and power imbalances influence the relationship between service providers and Maori people. This has been adapted to the needs of older lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex Australians.

Improved HIV awareness and perceived empowerment to negotiate safe sex among married women in Ethiopia between 2005 and 2011.

INTRODUCTION: The HIV prevalence rate in Ethiopia for married (or cohabiting) women is 3 times that found amongst women who have never been married. While marriage used to be seen as a protective factor against HIV, evidence suggests that this is no longer necessarily the case. This study analyses the trend and socio-demographic determinants of HIV awareness and safe sex negotiation among married women in Ethiopia between 2005 and 2011. METHODS: Data from Ethiopian Demographic and Health Surveys conducted in 2005 and in 2011 were analysed. Socio-demographic variables as well as 'survey year'

Sex and female empowerment (SAFE): A randomized trial comparing sexual health interventions for women in treatment for opioid use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Unintended pregnancies are prevalent among women with opioid use disorder (OUD). The Sex and Female Empowerment (SAFE) project developed a social-cognitive, theory-driven intervention to increase acceptance of and adherence to contraceptive practices among women receiving medication for OUD (MOUD). This study evaluated the feasibility and acceptability of two SAFE interventions (Face-to-face and Computer-adapted) compared to usual care as well as their efficacy to improve contraception utilization. METHODS: This pilot randomized trial enrolled 90 heterosexual, non-pregnant, reprod

Safe Sex and the Debate over Condoms on Campus in the 1980s: Sperm Busters at Harvard and Protection Connection at the University of Texas at Austin.

During the 1980s, college students in the United States helped to destigmatize the distribution and use of condoms. They shifted their aims from preventing unwanted pregnancy to stopping the spread of sexually transmitted infections including the newly identified acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Two student-led initiatives to deliver condoms after hours at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts and the University of Texas at Austin show regional and temporal differences in sexual mores as awareness of AIDS increased. These male students adopted a non-pharmaceutical interventi

'I've had unsafe sex so many times why bother being safe now?': the role of cognitions in sexual risk among American Indian/Alaska Native men who have sex with men.

BACKGROUND: American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) men who have sex with men (MSM) are at high risk of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) acquisition and transmission. PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate a potential area of focus for HIV prevention interventions by assessing the impact of sexual risk cognitions on sexual risk-taking among AI/AN MSM. METHODS: AI/AN MSM (N = 173) from a national cross-sectional survey were analyzed. RESULTS: Reporting more frequent sexual risk cognitions overall (high sexual risk cognitions) was associated with multiple HIV risk factors including unprotec

Barriers and facilitators for safe sex behaviors in students from universidad de Santiago de Chile (USACH) through the COM-B model.

BACKGROUND: Unsafe sex is one of the main morbidity and mortality risk factors associated with sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in young people. Behavioral change interventions for promoting safe sex have lacked specificity and theoretical elements about behavior in their designs, which may have affected the outcomes for HIV/AIDS and STI prevention, as well as for safe sex promotion. This study offers an analysis of the barriers and facilitators that, according to the university students who participated in the focus groups, impede or promote the success of interventions promoting health
