Salinity-Driven Microbial Community Engineering for Safer Ultrafiltration Water Reuse.

Ultrafiltration is central to water reclamation but faces two critical challenges: microbial regrowth that threatens biostability and pathogen invasion that undermines biosafety. Here, we proposed an ecological strategy that transformed backwash from a cleaning procedure into a microbiome engineering tool, thereby simultaneously addressing both challenges. Our findings provided evidence for the major microbial sources in permeate, including membrane breakthrough, detachment from the membrane permeate side, and from downstream pipeline surfaces. High-salinity backwash (100 mM NaCl) suppressed t

Impact of pressure, temperature, and salinity on helium-quartz wettability.

Helium (He), widely used in cryogenic and superconductivity technologies, occurs naturally in subsurface reservoirs, where its migration, trapping, and retention are governed by wettability. Although clean quartz is initially strongly water-wet and He is inert and non-polar, and has negligible adsorption tendency, contact angle can still vary with pressure, temperature, and brine salinity through changes in the gas-brine-solid interfacial energy balance. Yet systematic wettability data for He-rock systems remain scarce, limiting reliable assessment of its subsurface behaviour. To address this

Diminishing Mercury Bioaccumulation in Zooplankton along an Estuarine Salinity Gradient.

Estuarine transition zones (ETZs) are biogeochemically complex, nutrient-rich environments supporting diverse and productive food webs. They may also be sites of microbial production of methylmercury (MeHg) and bioaccumulation of this neurotoxicant at the base of the food web. However, the environmental drivers controlling these mechanisms are unclear. We studied the pattern of MeHg bioaccumulation in zooplankton along the 200 km ETZ of a large North American estuary, the St. Lawrence Estuary (Québec, Canada). Our approach integrated the dynamic variation in ETZ geochemistry, focusing on MeHg

Polyelectrolyte Complex Membranes via Salinity Change Induced Aqueous Phase Separation.

Polymeric membranes are used on very large scales for drinking water production and kidney dialysis, but they are nearly always prepared by using large quantities of unsustainable and toxic aprotic solvents. In this study, a water-based, sustainable, and simple way of making polymeric membranes is presented without the need for harmful solvents or extreme pH conditions. Membranes were prepared from water-insoluble polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) via aqueous phase separation (APS). Strong polyelectrolytes (PEs), poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS), and poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride)

Effects of salinity on the adsorption of nucleotides onto phyllosilicates.

In the context of the origin of life, phyllosilicate surfaces might favor the adsorption, concentration and reactivity of otherwise diluted prebiotic molecules. The primitive oceanic seafloor was certainly rich in Fe-Mg-rich phyllosilicates. The salinity of the primitive seawater remains largely unknown. Values ranging from 1 to 15 times modern salinity have been proposed and the salt composition of the primitive ocean also remains elusive although it may have played a role in the interactions between nucleotides and mineral surfaces. Therefore we studied the adsorption of 5'-monophosphate deo

Inorganic fouling mitigation by salinity cycling in batch reverse osmosis.

Enhanced fouling resistance has been observed in recent variants of reverse osmosis (RO) desalination which use time-varying batch or semi-batch processes, such as closed-circuit RO (CCRO) and pulse flow RO (PFRO). However, the mechanisms of batch processes' fouling resistance are not well-understood, and models have not been developed for prediction of their fouling performance. Here, a framework for predicting reverse osmosis fouling is developed by comparing the fluid residence time in batch and continuous (conventional) reverse osmosis systems to the nucleation induction times for crystall

Effects of dietary long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids on osmoregulation and salinity adaptation in red tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus♀ × O. niloticus♂) under salinity stress.

The roles of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA) in osmoregulation and salinity adaptation in teleost fish were investigated in red tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus♀ × O. niloticus♂). Groups of juvenile fish were reared initially in freshwater (FW, 0 ppt) or seawater (SW, 32 ppt) and fed diets containing either LC-PUFA-rich fish oil (FO) or rapeseed oil (VO) that lacks LC-PUFA, but is rich in C18 PUFA. After 8 weeks of feeding, the four groups of fish were subjected to salinity stress by directly changing to brackish water (BW, 16 ppt). Fish were sampled after 0 h, 3 h, 6 h, 1 d,

Ion Homeostasis in Chloroplasts under Salinity and Mineral Deficiency : I. Solute Concentrations in Leaves and Chloroplasts from Spinach Plants under NaCl or NaNO(3) Salinity.

Spinach (Spinacia oleracea var "Yates") plants in hydroponic culture were exposed to stepwise increased concentrations of NaCl or NaNO(3) up to a final concentration of 300 millimoles per liter, at constant Ca(2+)-concentration. Leaf cell sap and extracts from aqueously isolated spinach chloroplasts were analyzed for mineral cations, anions, amino acids, sugars, and quarternary ammonium compounds. Total osmolality of leaf sap and photosynthetic capacity of leaves were also measured. For comparison, leaf sap from salt-treated pea plants was also analyzed. Spinach plants under NaCl or NaNO(3) sa

Exploring the bacterial communities in date palm roots in saline versus non-saline environment.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial communities associated with plant roots significantly influence plant growth and adaptation to environmental stresses, particularly in arid agroecosystems. Soil salinity is one critical abiotic stress factor that affects the microbial community structure and functionality. Understanding how soil salinity affects the composition and function of root-associated microbiota in date palms (Phoenix dactylifera L.) could offer valuable insights into enhancing plant resilience and agricultural productivity. RESULTS: This study investigated the influence of soil salinity on the b

Effects of hypertonic saline vs normal saline on lactate clearance after cardiovascular surgery.

BACKGROUND: The postoperative care of patients subjected to cardiac surgery frequently require a complete recovery with intravenous fluids, but crystalloid solutions like normal saline may increase the interstitial oedema, and it is also well known that fluid overload increases mortality. OBJECTIVE: To compare the effect of 7.5% hypertonic saline (HS) with 0.9% normal saline (NS) on lactate clearance, as well as the haemodynamic response of patients during the first day after cardiovascular bypass surgery. METHODS: The study included patients 18 years of age and older with coronary artery di

Self-organized hummock-hollow patterns redistribute salinity stress in coastal meadows.

Self-organization theory predicts that ecosystem functioning and resilience can emerge from feedbacks that generate spatial patterns. These emergent properties have commonly been explained by local positive feedbacks that concentrate limiting resources within productive patches. Here, we identify a stress-redistribution feedback underlying self-organized hummock-hollow patterning. Through this feedback, salinity stress is partitioned across the patterned landscape, maintaining vegetated hummocks as low-salinity refugia alongside salt-rich hollows and thereby sustaining ecosystem functioning un

Rhizosphere Bacterial Communities of Two Coastal Halophytes Under Salinity-Flooding Stress.

Soil salinisation and periodic flooding jointly shape coastal wetland ecosystems, but how coexisting halophytes differ in their rhizosphere bacterial communities under these conditions remains insufficiently understood. Here, we investigated rhizosphere bacterial communities associated with Suaeda glauca Bunge and Tamarix chinensis Lour. in saline-alkaline habitats of the Yellow River Delta, China. Twenty quadrat-level rhizosphere samples were collected across four plant-habitat groups, and near-full-length 16S rRNA gene amplicons were sequenced using Pacific Biosciences single-molecule real-t

Effects of Salinity on Gill Ultrastructure of Alligator Gar Atractosteus spatula.

The alligator gar, Atractosteus spatula (Lacépède, 1803), is a euryhaline, bimodal breather, occupying a wide range of habitats. The gills and swim bladder are both respiratory organs, creating a potential trade-off for fish inhabiting saline environments where gills must also be used to facilitate osmo- and ionoregulation. Therefore, to understand whether gill adaptations in alligator gar differ from other euryhaline basal fishes and teleosts, alligator gar were acclimated to fresh water (salinity: 0; n = 5) or saline water (salinity: 20; n = 5) for over 4 weeks and gill ultrastructure and lo

Rhizobacteria-Mediated Plant Resilience to Abiotic Stresses: Drought, Salinity, and Heat.

The frequent occurrence of drought, salinity and heat disasters due to global climate change has become a problem that cannot be ignored and seriously restricts food security and sustainable agricultural development. The role of rhizobacteria in the response of plants to abiotic stress has an important guiding significance in improving plant growth. This paper summarizes the response of plant rhizosphere microbial communities to abiotic stress, analyzes the mechanism by which rhizosphere-related bacteria assist plants to resist abiotic stress, and expounds on the interaction between soil physi

Hydrogen sulfide as a potential translational hub for crop salinity tolerance.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is widely implicated in plants' adaptive responses to salinity, regulating processes ranging from ionic homeostasis to antioxidant defense and is often described as a central signaling hub due to its interaction with core signaling pathways, such as Ca2+, reactive oxygen species, nitric oxide, and phytohormones. However, most evidence remains correlative and relies heavily on pharmacological interventions. This review critically examines the mechanistic gaps, causality, and specificity of H2S-mediated signaling in regulating salinity adaptive responses in plants. We argu

The role of strigolactone in alleviating salinity stress in chili pepper.

Salinity stress can significantly delay plant growth. It can disrupt water and nutrient uptake, reducing crop yields and poor plant health. The use of strigolactone can be an effective technique to overcome this issue. Strigolactone enhances plant growth by promoting root development and improvement in physiological attributes. The current pot study used strigolactone to amend chili under no salinity and salinity stress environments. There were four treatments, i.e., 0, 10µM strigolactone, 20µM strigolactone and 30µM strigolactone. All treatments were applied in four replications following a c

Changes in Larval Oyster Swimming Behavior with Salinity and Larval Age.

AbstractEastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica) are sessile, relying on a larval phase to disperse in estuaries. Oyster larval swimming behavior can alter dispersal trajectories and patterns of population connectivity. Experiments were conducted to test how both (1) acclimation time to new environmental conditions and (2) larval swimming behavior change with salinity and larval age. Acclimation time to changes in salinity was longest in lower salinity (6 ppt) and decreased with age. To test changes in behavior with salinity, larvae were placed into four salinities (6, 10, 16, and 22 ppt) where

Fundamental research on selective arsenic removal from high-salinity alkaline wastewater.

The alkaline leaching process of arsenic-containing solid waste discharged during nonferrous metal smelting affords typical high-salinity alkaline arsenic-containing wastewater (HSAW). In this study, for the first time, Me (Ca2+ and Mg2+)-AsO43--OH--H2O and Me (Ca2+ and Mg2+)-AsO43--CO32--H2O systems are studied based on a thermodynamic equilibrium diagram and an arsenic removal experiment, proving that the removal of arsenic using single metal ions in the presence of CO32- is infeasible because of carbonate coprecipitation. Based on this observation, a new method that uses magnesium ammonium

Emerging warriors against salinity in plants: Nitric oxide and hydrogen sulphide.

The agriculture sector is vulnerable to various environmental stresses, which significantly affect plant growth, performance, and development. Abiotic stresses, such as salinity and drought, cause severe losses in crop productivity worldwide. Soil salinity is a major stress suppressing plant development through osmotic stress accompanied by ion toxicity, nutritional imbalance, and oxidative stress. Various defense mechanisms like osmolytes accumulations, activation of stress-induced genes, and transcription factors, production of plant growth hormones, accumulation of antioxidants, and redox d

Does Body Shape in Fundulus Adapt to Variation in Habitat Salinity?

Understanding the ecological pressures that generate variation in body shape is important because body shape profoundly affects physiology and overall fitness. Using Fundulus, a genus of fish that exhibits considerable morphological and physiological variation with evidence of repeated transitions between freshwater and saltwater habitats, we tested whether habitat salinity has influenced the macroevolution of body shape at different stages in development. After accounting for phylogenetic inertia, we find that body shape deviates from the optimal streamlined shape in a manner consistent with
