The Chaperone System in Salivary Glands: Hsp90 Prospects for Differential Diagnosis and Treatment of Malignant Tumors.

Salivary gland tumors represent a serious medical problem and new tools for differential diagnosis and patient monitoring are needed. Here, we present data and discuss the potential of molecular chaperones as biomarkers and therapeutic targets, focusing on Hsp10 and Hsp90. The salivary glands are key physiological elements but, unfortunately, the information and the means available for the management of their pathologies, including cancer, are scarce. Progress in the study of carcinogenesis has occurred on various fronts lately, one of which has been the identification of the chaperone system

Anopheles salivary antigens as serological biomarkers of vector exposure and malaria transmission: A systematic review with multilevel modelling.

BACKGROUND: Entomological surveillance for malaria is inherently resource-intensive and produces crude population-level measures of vector exposure which are insensitive in low-transmission settings. Antibodies against Anopheles salivary proteins measured at the individual level may serve as proxy biomarkers for vector exposure and malaria transmission, but their relationship is yet to be quantified. METHODS: A systematic review of studies measuring antibodies against Anopheles salivary antigens (PROSPERO: CRD42020185449). Multilevel modelling (to account for multiple study-specific observati

Performance Evaluation of Ultrasound Images Using Non-Local Means Algorithm with Adaptive Isotropic Search Window for Improved Detection of Salivary Gland Diseases: A Pilot Study.

Speckle noise in ultrasound images (UIs) significantly reduces the accuracy of disease diagnosis. The aim of this study was to quantitatively evaluate its feasibility in salivary gland ultrasound imaging by modeling the adaptive non-local means (NLM) algorithm. UIs were obtained using an open-source device provided by SonoSkills and FUJIFILM Healthcare Europe. The adaptive NLM algorithm automates optimization by modeling the isotropic search window, eliminating the need for manual configuration in conventional NLM methods. The coefficient of variation (COV), contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), and

Longitudinal Follow-Up of Gut and Salivary Microbiota in Children With Food Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Gut microbiota and their metabolites play a key role in digestive dysimmunity and tolerance breakdown, leading to pathologies such as food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES). This study aimed to compare both the gut and salivary microbiota over time between the allergic and tolerant patients and the matched controls. METHODS: Faecal and salivary samples were collected longitudinally from FPIES allergic patients on an elimination diet, and after their natural tolerance acquisition, and from matched controls (1:1 ratio). 16S rRNA gene sequencing and biostatistical analys

The salivary microbiome as a diagnostic biomarker of periodontitis: a 16S multi-batch study before and after the removal of batch effects.

INTRODUCTION: Microbiome-based clinical applications that improve diagnosis related to oral health are of great interest to precision dentistry. Predictive studies on the salivary microbiome are scarce and of low methodological quality (low sample sizes, lack of biological heterogeneity, and absence of a validation process). None of them evaluates the impact of confounding factors as batch effects (BEs). This is the first 16S multi-batch study to analyze the salivary microbiome at the amplicon sequence variant (ASV) level in terms of differential abundance and machine learning models. This is

Iodide mumps following fistulogram in a haemodialysis patient.

Iodide mumps, or contrast-induced acute sialadenitis, is characterised by rapid, painless enlargement of the salivary glands, following the use of iodinated contrast dye. The underlying mechanism of this adverse reaction is not completely understood. It could be due to an idiosyncratic reaction or related to deposition of iodide in the ductal systems of the salivary glands causing blockage and inflammation. With increasing renal dysfunction, the elimination half-life of the iodine-containing contrast dye gets prolonged. The course of iodine-induced sialadenitis is usually benign, and rapid res

Interventional radiology in the removal of salivary calculi.

PURPOSE: To prospectively investigate the efficacy of a wire basket extractor in the retrieval of salivary calculi and establish selection criteria for suitable cases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-five consecutive patients (14 male, 11 female; age range, 13-69 years) with salivary calculi (20 submandibular, five parotid) were treated by using a commercially available wire basket extractor with intermittent fluoroscopic guidance. RESULTS: Elimination of calculi was accomplished in 10 (40%) cases. In an additional seven (28%) cases, either part of the calculus was removed or whole calculi wer

Salivary Glycoprofiling via a Machine Learning-Augmented Lectin Microarray for Noninvasive Risk Stratification of Lung Cancer.

Although aberrant glycosylation is closely associated with lung cancer (LC), salivary glycopatterns and their discriminatory value across healthy individuals, benign pulmonary disease, and LC remain insufficiently characterized. We profiled saliva from 307 participants using a lectin microarray, comprising a development cohort of 227 participants and an independent test cohort of 80 participants. Five task-specific LASSO-logistic regression models were constructed to distinguish pulmonary disease, LC, and LC subtypes. A separate Nom-LC model combined consensus lectin features selected by LASSO

Vaccine-induced rabies in a red fox (Vulpes vulpes): isolation of vaccine virus in brain tissue and salivary glands.

Oral vaccination campaigns to eliminate fox rabies were initiated in Slovenia in 1995. In May 2012, a young fox (Vulpes vulpes) with typical rabies signs was captured. Its brain and salivary gland tissues were found to contain vaccine strain SAD B19. The Basic Logical Alignment Search Tool alignment of 589 nucleotides determined from the N gene of the virus isolated from the brain and salivary glands of the affected fox was 100% identical to the GenBank reference SAD B19 strain. Sequence analysis of the N and M genes (4,351 nucleotides) showed two nucleotide modifications at position 1335 (N g

A Composite Recombinant Salivary Proteins Biomarker for Phlebotomus argentipes Provides a Surveillance Tool Postelimination of Visceral Leishmaniasis in India.

Incidence of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in the Indian subcontinent (ISC) has declined by more than 95% since initiation of the elimination program in 2005. As the ISC transitions to the postelimination surveillance phase, an accurate measurement of human-vector contact is needed to assure long-term success. To develop this tool, we identified PagSP02 and PagSP06 from saliva of Phlebotomus argentipes, the vector of Leishmania donovani in the ISC, as immunodominant proteins in humans. We also established the absence of cross-reactivity with Phlebotomus papatasi saliva, the only other human-biti

New aspects in the use of atropine.

Several new factors have recently been shown to influence the pharmacokinetics of atropine. Age appears to have a clear effect on the elimination of atropine: for example, prolonged elimination has been found in children under 2 years of age and in the elderly. The higher sensitivity of these patients to the effects of atropine can be explained, at least partly, by this phenomenon. Due to the fast placental transfer of atropine, i.v. administration before cesarean section can have strong effects on the newborn. Most important, however, it decreases the barrier pressure of the lower cardioesoph

[Clinic and ultrasound of salivary gland diseases--Part II].

Ultrasound can be valuable in the assessment of salivary gland disease. This examination is simple, non-invasive and cost-effective. Few cases require the need for additional imaging modalities. The use of ultrasound can confirm a diagnosis that has been suggested by case history and findings. Evidence of a mass is an indication for fine-needle aspiration. This does not eliminate the need for histological follow-up.

Salivary secretion during selective beta-adrenoreceptor stimulation and blockade in the parotid gland of red kangaroos, Macropus rufus.

Intracarotid infusions of noradrenaline (0.3 nmol.kg(-1) x min(-1)) stimulated salivary fluid secretion and caused increases in salivary concentrations of protein, potassium. magnesium. chloride and phosphate, and decreases in bicarbonate. These effects of intracarotid noradrenaline were not reduced by simultaneous intracarotid infusion of phentolamine (3.0 nmol.kg(-1) x min(-1)) but were significantly greater than the responses accompanying intravenous noradrenaline infusion. Concomitant administration of the beta-antagonist, CGP20712A, were much more effective in blocking the noradrenaline-i

Ano6 disruption impairs acinar cell regulatory volume decrease and protein secretion in murine submandibular salivary glands.

The widely expressed Anoctamin 6 (Ano6) supports different Ca2+ -dependent functions, but little is known about its role in salivary glands. Mouse submandibular gland (SMG) acinar cells exhibited a robust regulatory volume decrease (RVD) following cell swelling that was reduced approximately 70% in Ano6-/- mice. Ca2+ -free conditions nearly eliminated the RVD response suggesting that Ano6 is an obligatory component of the cell volume-activated, Ca2+ -dependent RVD pathway in salivary gland acinar cells. Ex vivo agonist-stimulated secretion of water and ions was unaffected by Ano6 disruption un

The application of saliva, sweat and tear fluid for diagnostic purposes.

Despite anatomical and biochemical similarities, salivary, sweat and lacrimal glandulas differ in their physiological functions. Salivary and tear fluid are required for the proper function of the epithelial layer from which they are secreted. The physiological function of sweat is the elimination of excess heat. The products of the three glandulas can be used to measure indicators either of glandula or of non-glandular diseases. In the latter case the indicator must be transported from the particular organ to the glandula where it is then secreted. In sweat, only one example has reached well

Oral complications in cancer patients.

Ionizing radiation used in treating the head and neck area produces oral side effects such as mucositis, salivary changes, trismus and radiation caries. Sequelae of cancer chemotherapy often include oral stomatitis, myelosuppression and immunosuppression. Infections of dental origin in compromised patients are potentially lethal. Specific programs to eliminate dental pathology before radiation and chemotherapy, and to maintain oral hygiene during and after therapy, will minimize these complications.
