Anthelmintic effects of Salix babylonica L. and Leucaena leucocephala Lam. extracts in growing lambs.

Twenty Katahdin × Pelibuey crossbreed male lambs, 3 to 4 months of age and 24 ± 0.3 kg of body weight, were used to study the anthelmintic effects of administering extracts of Salix babylonica L. (SB) and Leucaena leucocephala Lam. (LL). Lambs had not been treated with anthelmintics previously and were randomly allocated into four groups of five lambs each in a completely randomized design. Treatments were as follows: control (lambs fed on total mixed ration without extracts), SB (as control plus S. babylonica L. extract at 30 ml/day), LL (as control plus L. leucocephala Lam. extract at 30 ml/

Performance of an herbivorous leaf beetle (Phratora vulgatissima) on Salix F2 hybrids: the importance of phenolics.

The genotype of the plant determines, through the expression of the phenotype, how well it is suited as food for herbivores. Since hybridization often results in profound genomic alterations with subsequent changes in phenotypic traits, it has the potential to significantly affect plant-herbivore interactions. In this study, we used a population of F2 hybrids that originated from a cross between a Salix viminalis and a Salix dasyclados genotype, which differed in both phenolic content and resistance to the herbivorous leaf beetle Phratora vulgatissima. We screened for plants that showed a grea

Application of high-performance liquid chromatography for research of salicin in bark of different varieties of Salix.

Willow (Salix L.) species are widely spread in Lithuanian natural dendroflora. Willow bark contains active substances known for anti-inflammatory properties and is known as a phytotherapeutic precursor of aspirin. Bark extracts are components of analgesic and antirheumatic preparations. Therapeutic effectiveness is associated with salicin (2-(hydroxymethyl)phenyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside), which turns into salicylic acid. Increasing attention to natural preparations gives primary importance to research of plants. This study focused on 12 willow taxa and employed routine pharmacopoeia methods. Hi

Combined enhancements of temperature and UVB influence growth and phenolics in clones of the sexually dimorphic Salix myrsinifolia.

Although several climatic factors are expected to change simultaneously in the future, the effect of such combined changes on plants have seldom been tested under field conditions. We report on a field experiment with dark-leaved willow, Salix myrsinifolia, subjected to enhancements in ultraviolet-A (UVA), UVB radiation and temperature, setup in Joensuu, Eastern Finland. S. myrsinifolia is a dioecious species, known as an important food plant for many herbivores. Cuttings of eight clones, four of each sex, of dark-leaved willow were planted in the field in spring 2009. In both 2009 and 2010, t

Gender differences in Salix myrsinifolia at the pre-reproductive stage are little affected by simulated climatic change.

Females of dioecious species are known often to prioritize defense, while males grow faster. As climatic change is known to influence both growth and defense in plants, it would be important to know whether it affects the sexes of dioecious species differently. This could have impacts on future sex ratios in nature. We grew four clones of each sex of Salix myrsinifolia in greenhouse chambers under ambient conditions, enhanced temperature, enhanced CO2 or enhanced temperature  +  enhanced CO2 . The females had the greatest growth and also the highest levels of phenolic compounds in twigs, while

The effect of genotype and cultivation method on the total salicylate yield of dark-leaved willows (Salix myrsinifolia).

Ten clones of dark-leaved willows ( Salix myrsinifolia Salisb.) were grown for two years on two different sites, Luikonlahti and Punkaharju, using various combinations of soil cultivation, fertilization and mulch treatments, with the objective of comparing the effect of different cultivation methods on the growth and total salicylate yield. In cultivated soil, the total salicylate yield ranged from 20 to 220 kg/ha, depending on the clone and cultivation method. The use of black polythene mulch and the addition of mineral fertilizer reduced the total salicylate concentrations of several clones.

Dose-Dependent Glutathione Modulation of Physiological Responses and Metal Accumulation in Salix variegata Under Cadmium Stress.

Exogenous glutathione (GSH) can alleviate cadmium (Cd) stress, yet physiological improvement and changes in internal Cd burden may not occur in parallel. Salix variegata seedlings were exposed for 10 d to 0 or 100 μM Cd with 0-1500 μM GSH. Across the full dose series, GSH responses were non-monotonic: 10 μM GSH increased root length by 67.3% under Cd stress, 250 μM GSH increased chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and total chlorophyll by 21.4%, 39.0%, and 25.7%, respectively, whereas 1500 μM GSH inhibited several growth and pigment traits. A common 2 × 2 subset (0/250 μM GSH × 0/100 μM Cd) was used

Integrated genomic, transcriptomic, and proteomic analyses prioritize cadmium-responsive class III peroxidases in Salix variegata.

Class III peroxidases (PRXs) link apoplastic redox regulation with cell-wall remodeling, yet their coordinated transcript- and protein-level responses to cadmium (Cd) remain poorly resolved in woody plants. We identified 80 high-confidence class III PRX genes in Salix variegata and characterized their genomic organization, evolutionary relationships, protein properties, and predicted regulatory features. Root RNA-seq and data-independent acquisition proteomic datasets from plants exposed to 0 or 100 μM CdCl2 for 10 d were then integrated to prioritize members supported across molecular layers.

Hydroponical estimation of interactions among selected heavy metals accumulated by Salix viminalis in phytoremediation process.

Determination of interactions between selected heavy metals (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn) in their phytoremediation by one-year-old cuttings of Salix viminalis 'Cannabina' was the purpose of this work. The achieved results indicate that Salix cuttings may successfully be used in phytoremediation of polluted soil and/or sewage not only with one metal at high concentrations but also in different combinations with the other metals. Under controlled conditions (the hydroponic experiment) new interactions were found as well as known data concerning interactions between-presented in the matrix-hea

Salicylic acid mediates resistance in the willow Salix viminalis against the gall midge Dasineura marginemtorquens.

Resistant willow (Salix viminalis L.) genotypes react with a rapid hypersensitive response (HR) when attacked by the gall midge Dasineura marginemtorquens Bremi. In general, infected plant genotypes or species that react hypersensitively to pathogens accumulate salicylic acid (SA) locally and systemically. Thus, pathogen-induced HRs are strongly associated with accumulation of SA. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that SA mediates resistance in S. viminalis against D. marginemtorquens. By means of HPLC, we found accumulation of SA in a resistant S. viminalis genotype, but not in a suscep

Preliminary phylogenetic insights into Japanese willows (Salix) using low-copy nuclear genes, with emphasis on endemic species.

In this study, we aimed to reveal the phylogenetic relationships of Salix species in Japan, with particular emphasis on the speciation process of endemic species. We performed molecular phylogenetic analyses of all available native species using multilocus datasets of low-copy nuclear genes and chloroplast sequences. Although gene-tree incongruence and basal reticulation were evident-implying the need for future genome-scale analyses-our analyses still provided sufficient resolution to clarify the phylogenetic structure of the Japanese Salix flora and to offer meaningful insights into its dive

Drought-induced embolism shapes sex-specific responses by regulating hydraulic conductivity in Populus cathayana and Salix babylonica.

Drought is a key constraint on plant growth and development. Poplars and willows are dioecious plants, and sex-specific responses to drought differ across species. However, little is known about how xylem embolism drives sex-specific hydraulic failure. In this study, male and female Populus cathayana and Salix babylonica were used to investigate the role of embolism in sex-specific drought responses. Drought significantly reduced plant growth and photosynthetic capacity, increased membrane damage and reactive oxygen species accumulation, altered vessel structure and aggravated embolism. P. cat

Melatonin improves cadmium tolerance in Salix viminalis by enhancing amino acid and saccharide metabolism, and increasing polyphenols.

As a short-rotation woody plant, Salix viminalis has the potential for phytoremediation of cadmium (Cd), but it has poor tolerance to high Cd concentrations. Melatonin (MEL), a candidate bio-promoter, was considered to play an active role in plant responses to Cd. However, the molecular mechanism by which MEL regulates metabolic processes in plants to defend against Cd stress remain unclear. Transcriptomics and global untargeted metabolomic sequencing were used to investigate the rapid response of S. viminalis to high Cd concentrations during initial growth stage after foliar application of ME

Large effect of phosphate-solubilizing bacteria on the growth and gene expression of Salix spp. at low phosphorus levels.

Phosphorus is one of the most important nutrients required for plant growth and development. However, owing to its low availability in the soil, phosphorus is also one of the most difficult elements for plants to acquire. Phosphorus released into the soil from bedrock quickly becomes unavailable to plants, forming poorly soluble complexes. Phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) can solubilize unavailable phosphorus-containing compounds into forms in which phosphorus is readily available, thus promoting plant growth. In this study, two willow species, Salix dasyclados cv. Loden and Salix schweri

Effects of Exogenous Organic Acids on Cd Tolerance Mechanism of Salix variegata Franch. Under Cd Stress.

Chelate induction of organic acids has been recognized to enhance metal uptake and translocation in plants, but the underlying mechanism remains unclear. In this study, seedlings of Salix variegata were hydroponically exposed to the combinations of Cd (0 and 50 μM) and three exogenous organic acids (100 μM of citric, tartaric, or malic acid). Plant biomass, antioxidant enzymes, non-protein thiol compounds (NPT) content, and the expression of candidate genes associated with Cd accumulation and tolerance were determined. Results showed that Cd significantly inhibited plant biomass but stimulated

Nonadditive gene expression is correlated with nonadditive phenotypic expression in interspecific triploid hybrids of willow (Salix spp.).

Many studies have highlighted the complex and diverse basis for heterosis in inbred crops. Despite the lack of a consensus model, it is vital that we turn our attention to understanding heterosis in undomesticated, heterozygous, and polyploid species, such as willow (Salix spp.). Shrub willow is a dedicated energy crop bred to be fast-growing and high yielding on marginal land without competing with food crops. A trend in willow breeding is the consistent pattern of heterosis in triploids produced from crosses between diploid and tetraploid species. Here, we test whether differentially express
