Non-typhoidal Salmonella osteomyelitis in healthy children is a very rare condition. A previously healthy 7-year-old boy presented with foot pain following a small injury. Local inflammatory signs of the foot were observed, with a normal radiograph. Two weeks before, he had had gastroenteritis. Assuming cellulitis, flucloxacillin was began. Early during admission, surgical subcutaneous abscess drainage was performed and Salmonella enteritidis was identified. According to bacterial susceptibility, antibiotherapy was changed to ceftriaxone. A foot radiograph and an MRI scan, performed on the 9th

In June 2018, in the city of Sofia, Bulgaria, 40 children from four different kindergartens suffered from salmonellosis caused by S. enteritidis. They were reported to have consumed food prepared and delivered by a private catering service. The patients had fever, diarrhea, and some had vomiting and abdominal pain. Sixteen of them were treated in hospital, and the other 24 received home treatment. Some of the outpatients received antibiotic treatment despite WHO recommendations. All 40 isolates were positive for O: D, H: gm and H: m, and were confirmed to be Salmonella enteritidis, respectivel

In September 2014, an outbreak of gastroenteritis was reported to the Public Health Institute of Šibenik and Knin County in Croatia. The outbreak occurred in the County center of Šibenik, a town with 50,000 inhabitants, and it lasted for 12days. An epidemiological investigation suggested a nearby water spring as the source of the outbreak. Due to the temporary closure of the public water supply system, the inhabitants started to use untreated water from a nearby spring. Microbiological analysis revealed that the outbreak was caused by Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Enteritidis tha

A previously healthy 2.5-year-old boy developed symptoms of acute pyelonephritis following an acute gastroenteritis. The patient received parenteral ampicillin and gentamicin for 72 hours and then ampicillin for an additional 11 days when the original urine and stool cultures grew Salmonella enteritidis, sensitive to ampicillin. The patient responded very well to treatment, but B-mode renal ultrasonogram revealed a left hydronephrosis and megaureter suggestive of longstanding obstruction of the ureterovesicular junction, later confirmed by other diagnostic studies and by surgical exploration a

Salmonella enteritidis (SE) has been recognized as an important zoonotic pathogen, and the prevention and control of salmonellosis has long been a conundrum. However, glycoconjugate vaccines seem to be a promising solution. Glycoproteins are conventionally synthesized by chemical cross-linking which features complex procedure and cost-intensiveness. Therefore, a stable biosynthesis method at lower cost is in urgent need. For the biosynthesis of SE O-antigen-based glycoproteins, we used CRISPR/Cas9 to develop the waaL-deleted SE strain ∆waaL. The synthesis of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was detect

Mesenteric adenitis is a self-limited condition characterized by fever, localized right lower quadrant abdominal pain, and frequent leukocytosis, making it difficult to differentiate from appendicitis. We report a case of mesenteric adenitis in an 8-year-old boy who presented at the emergency department with right lower quadrant abdominal pain, diarrhea, and fever up to 40 degrees C. Acute appendicitis was initially suspected, but further abdominal ultrasound and contrast enhanced computed tomography studies showed a normal appendix with marked mesenteric adenopathy. Symptomatic treatment was

Until recently, Salmonella enterica serotype Enteritidis has remained sensitive to most antibiotics. However, national surveillance data from Denmark show that quinolone resistance in S. Enteritidis has increased from 0.8% in 1995 to 8.5% in 2000. These data support concerns that the current use of quinolone in food animals leads to increasing resistance in S. Enteritidis and that action should be taken to limit such use.

Salmonella control strategies include vaccines that help reduce the spread of Salmonella in poultry flocks. In this study we evaluated the efficacy of administering a live Salmonella vaccine followed by a killed Salmonella chitosan nanoparticle (CNP) vaccine booster on the cellular and humoral immunity of broilers. The CNP vaccine was synthesized with Salmonella Enteritidis (S. Enteritidis) outer-membrane-proteins (OMPs) and flagellin-proteins. At d1-of-age, one-hundred-sixty-eight chicks were allocated into treatments: 1) No vaccine, 2) Live vaccine (Poulvac®ST), 3) CNP vaccine, 4) Live+CNP v

Our previous work showed that the cell-mediated immunity (CMI) was enhanced by live Salmonella vaccine (LV). The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of live and killed Salmonella vaccines on Salmonella enteritidis (SE) clearance and to determine if the clearance was mediated by cell-mediated and/or humoral immunity. Chickens were first immunized at 2 weeks of age followed by a booster dose at 4 weeks, challenged with live SE 2 weeks later (6-week-old) and tested for CMI, antibody response and SE clearance 1-week post SE-challenge (7-week-old). Spleen cell proliferation induced b

Since 2014, the long-term decreasing trend in human salmonellosis, caused mainly by the consumption of Salmonella-contaminated poultry products, has stagnated in the European Union (EU). As Poland has been the leading poultry meat producer in the EU since 2014, we analysed whole genome sequences of 275 Salmonella (S.) Enteritidis strains from the poultry food production chain (n = 216) and humans (n = 59) (2008-2019) to shed light on the genetic content and relatedness of the S. Enteritidis population in Poland. Most (99.3%) of the strains belonged to ST11. Overall, 5.8% of strains possessed a

Mycotic aneurysms are rare but severe complications that can arise from systemic bacterial infections, including those caused by Salmonella species. These aneurysms can progress rapidly and are associated with high mortality. A 62-year-old man with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus presented to the hospital in septic shock. The blood culture grew Salmonella enteritidis. A computed tomography angiogram showed a ruptured mycotic aneurysm of the infrarenal abdominal aorta. Despite antibiotic therapy and supportive care, the patient's condition rapidly deteriorated, resulting in his death

We have investigated the antibacterial, anti-biofilm, and anti-quorum sensing potencies of six Essential Oils (EOs) obtained from cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum), thyme (Thymus vulgaris), clove (Eugenia caryophyllata), curcuma (Curcuma longa L.), rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.), and sage (Salvia officinalis). The study was conducted on 20 multidrug-resistant (MDR) S. enteritidis clinical strains. Minimum inhibitory concentrations and minimum bactericide concentrations were displayed by microdilution. The effect on biofilm formation was tested on polystyrene plates. The anti-quorum sensing eff

INTRODUCTION: In spring 2007a cluster of nosocomial salmonellosis cases, culture confirmed for SALMONELLA Enteritidis lysotype (LT) 8/7, occurred in a Wolfsburg hospital. An outbreak investigation was initiated to determine the epidemiology of the outbreak and to identify and control the possible sources.
METHODS: A multidisciplinary outbreak team was formed including members from hospital hygiene and local, state and national health and veterinarian authorities. Active surveillance was set up in the hospital to find new cases. A retrospective case control study was conducted to identify poss

BACKGROUND: Salmonella infection of the parotid gland is rare.
CASE: An instance in a 50-year-old man of Salmonella enteritidis parotiditis initially recognized by microbial culture of a fine needle aspiration cytology material is described. The identified predisposing factor was chronic alcoholic abuse. For the infection source, a carrier state of salmonella parotitis was postulated, which progressed to focal abscess and was subsequently complicated by bacteremia and hematogenous spread to the liver, spleen and lungs.
CONCLUSION: Salmonella should be included in the differential considerati

Two cases of colitis due to Salmonella enteriditis which later developed a toxic megacolon with intestinal perforation are presented and the probable pathogenesis is discussed. This exceptional clinical course which has not been previously described forces to perform a differential diagnosis with chronic intestinal inflammatory disease which must be based on microbiologic, serologic and/or histologic criteria. Moreover, the authors warn about the unsuitability of using anticholigernic drugs in gastroenteritis since they could be related to the ethiopathogenical basis of the disease's unfavorab
